Hello Florida Region family and friends, Jay Weitzel here wishing
the first half of 2005 has treated you well, certainly better (I hope) than it
has our Formula One team?$#@!! We will talk more about that later. As
summer gets into full stride here in the sunshine state, school is finished for
another year for our younger Ferraristi, the Florida Region’s busy season is
over, and just about everyone else, everywhere else, are kicking their
Prancing Horses out of their garages and into events every weekend. Go
pick up a copy of the FCA News bulletin and you’ll see what I mean. The
good folks up in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and of course our north-of-the
-border brethren in the Canadian regions are now working hard. We certainly
won’t forget the Midwest who just finished hosting the 2005 FCA
Annual Meet teaming up with the Circus that is Formula one, that was a
complete week of all that is Ferrari. For all of you reading this up north,
enjoy your summer fun and pace yourselves because you still have us to
come home to and we will keep you busy thru 2006. However, for all of us
staying here this summer season do not worry, do not sweat, the Florida
Region will invade the Conch Republic once again!!!
Well, at the very least the Cheeca Lodge and Spa in
beautiful Islamorada. Join us July 22, 23, 24 for we
have the suntan lotion already packed and the north
beach of the Lodge will again be our private oasis for
Saturday night’s festivities. A couple of surprises in
store for Saturday and of course, the German Grand
Prix on Sunday morning. We made Friday night’s “get
together” a cocktail party with the back deck of the
Lodge reserved just for us. The most important things
you should remember about Summer Soiree II are: 1)
if you are wearing long pants you are waaaaaay overdressed,
2) If you expect anything formal, your expectations
are waaaaaay to high, and finally, 3) special
prizes will be awarded for the “LOUDEST” Hawaiian
shirt at Saturday night’s Barbeque. This is the “kick
back and chill” event for us that if you and your prancing
horse have never been off the Mainland, check it
out and you’ll see why all who have can’t wait to take
US 1 south. Come join us, we have saved you a drink
under the moonlight and tiki torches.......
Looking back at this last couple of months
there have certainly been some changes to our club. I
would like to talk about some of them now and let you
know what is in store for all of us as we “electrify” the
Region. This will make every aspect of joining us for any and every event
much easier. What I mean by electrify is that all event registrations will be
available as always via our website (fcafloridaregion.com) but from now on
the registration form will become “ACTIVE” and you will fill the form out
online and when submitted the completely secure information (credit card
number, address, etc.) will go straight to our Bank of America account,
immediately showing you if entered properly or not. The immediate benefit
for you will be registration no longer requiring the download, print, fax, and
hope we got it, chain of events. The benefit for us is monumental, no more
trying to read faxes that did not print properly, or chasing down someone
who did not sign up for this lunch or that
track session, or credit card numbers not
working. All vital event information will be
recorded immediately and will be
accessed via a very easy to work with
spreadsheet, tracking all entries for easy
printout at registration. The entire spreadsheet
(of course minus the secure info.)
will be used by Larry and Sherry Sietsma
to provide the most accurate and up to
date registration forms we have ever had
as a Club. The best part of this system will
be if you wish to register at the track or in
the Keys or at any other event we may
have, you’ll do it right there via laptop on
the “active” webpage registration and be
good to go. Now don’t
despair, if you still wish
to do it the “old way”
Don Bartz our new
Treasurer (you know
Don, remember Costa
Rica), will still take your
fax sending it through the computer
exactly as I described before but will be
secure and much more efficient. This
method of processing is not only safer and more efficient but also cheaper for the
club per transaction. Think PayPal on eBay or ordering anything online and you got
the idea... OK enough about business.
I mentioned earlier that our Treasurer is now Don Bartz. That is because
our longtime “keeper of the checkbook” Melissa Lundberg has “RETIRED” from her
position to move onward and upward to bigger and better things, mainly chasing her
brand new baby boy all around the house and all us who have kids know that is more
than a full time job. So from all of us here in the Florida Region we say THANK YOU
MELISSA!!!, and the best to you and your new family, thank you for all that you have
done for so long to have kept us “in the black.” Drop Melissa an e-mail sometime to
tell her thank you and say hi....
A quick couple of words on the Formula One world championship and how
things are going for the “home team” Michael, Rubens and Ferrari this year. Well
enough about that..... How’s that 8 cylinder looking..... Bridgestone who?..... next.....
As the changes keep coming, I would like to officially welcome Mr. Steve
Cantera from Naples to our Board of Directors and to thank him for becoming our
West Coast Chapter Representative. Steve is a long time “Ferrari Guy” and we are
looking forward to “hangin out” more over on the Gulfside, and, working on some
great events together in the future. There are a lot of great folks doing a lot of great
things all over Florida and to be able to join in the fun and truly enjoy what this
Region has to offer, from track to tiki torch, is what we are all about. Thanks again,
to Steve and Welcome Aboard.....
If you all remember from the first issue of this year’s Redline, and those
of us lucky enough to have gone, our San Jose, Costa Rica trip was a great success
and we have decided to make this kind of international excursion a yearly
event. that being said, we would like to take our 2006 trip to Italy. YES, that’s
right, ITA LY. A Ferrari Factory tour, Modena, Maranello, and beyond. We need
ideas, connections, and any kind of general suggestions you may have to off e r.
This endeavor will certainly take a lot of preflight planning and we need your help.
The plan is to go third week of September 2006. Stay Tuned and call, e-mail, or
fax us with your help.....
I do not wish to steal any thunder from Debbie Pyle who will be coming right
up as you turn the pages telling us all about our second Disney Celebration of Exotic
Cars Festival, however, again, all of us who were lucky enough to attend will certainly
agree, this was the highlight of the year. Our longtime charity, Make-A-Wish, and was
represented by a great family who, because of our generous giving last year, made
their wish come true. After their presentation and because of a lot of big hearted folks
in the audience, MANY more children will get their wish this year. This is an event that
should not be missed. A huge thanks to Jeff and his incredible committee for putting
together this hopefully permanent addition to the Florida Region calendar.....
The extravaganza that is the Sebring Spring Spectacular took pace at the
end of April and to say it was a success would be the understatement of this publication.
This of course, was the first track event of our calendar year (stay tuned
there will be more), and my first as Regional Director. Mother Nature seemed to
take care of me and offered up my official baptism as Saturday morning brought
about 2 inches of rain in one hour and drowned out any hopes of early Saturday
morning runs. The rain ended as fast as it started and before noon we were looking
up at blue sky and bright sun. The Sebring schedule, in my opinion, is not broken,
does not need fixed, and should stay as it’s always been. We always start
with Thursday night around the bar at the Chateau Elan and the story telling and
catching up runs way into the night. When I went to bed the Ferrari of Central

Florida boys were still “working hard” at both ends of the room but no worries
because Friday morning brought hot sun lots of tech-inspected Ferraris and the
boys were ready to go without missing a step.
Ferrari of Central Florida has been a wonderful sponsor for us at Sebring
for many years now and we thank them for all they do both at Sebring and for our
Celebration event. Without their help the event could not be put together as smoothly
and as professionally as it is. Again, Thank you for all you do.
Friday lunch at Sebring, again as always, catered by Big John and his crew
at Executive Catering had a little twist to it this year in that it was about 160 degrees
by noontime and we all needed a break from the heat so we commandeered the
Media Room, the air conditioned Media Room, fresh from the previous weekend’s
12-hour race. It was upstairs looking right out on the track. The Speed Channel was
tuned in and with the comfortable tables and chairs we certainly thank the race control
guys for keeping us cool during lunch and also for “hooking us up” with the public
address system and security overnight keeping all the prancing horses corralled.
Friday morning brought what is one of the most important parts of all our track
events. Peter A r g e t s i n g e r, our longtime professional instructor had the drivers’ s c h o o l
set up and working his magic with first time and repeat students and longtime instructors.
This part of our track event is sometimes overlooked, but I believe needs a little
more spotlight put on it. Pete and crew can certainly show you the line around the
track, but more important, they can give you the confidence you need to “heel and toe”
your way to a great lap, or get you out and around for the first time. The fantastic safety
record we have here in Florida, is owed in big part to the drivers’ school and its
instructors. Thank you Peter, and all your instructors so very much again.
As the sun set Friday night we headed for the tent set up for us behind the
Chateau and believe me when I say this tent is NOT Boy Scout caliber. We are talking
chandelier in the center, water fountain underneath, and Ferrari flags flying. This
year we added the “day in review” for lack of a better title as the pictures taken all
day long of all of us showed throughout the evening in a slideshow presentation.
Thanks to “Official Club Photographer” Nadia for doing a great job chasing everyone
down, and to Charlie Scardina Jr. for the laptop to “make it happen.”
S a t u r d a y ’s rainout found us right back upstairs in the media room for the
d r i v e r s ’ meeting and chalk talk by Pete Argetsinger and Chief Track Steward Bob
Pease. Bob I thank for keeping everyone running in the right groups and all the
other “fires” he put out throughout the weekend without us even knowing. By lunch
all was right back on Schedule. Saturday night concluded with our DJs spinning
records and what has become an almost given at our events, but we are all so lucky
to have, our sponsors giveaways and raffles. I must thank the VERY, VERY, generous
Jack DiMaio from Pirelli Tires, Pirelli being one of our longtime sponsors, for
all the goodies given away.
Sunday morning rolled around, and you can see by the pictures, our
Concours was quite diverse with excellent examples of both old and new. As always,
Steve Selz our Chief Judge handled the field with ease. A big thanks to Steve and
FCASenior Judge Greg Jones who substituted for Master IAC/PFA Judge Bob Selz
who was on vacation in the far east.
I wish to thank everyone who participated in Sebring and everyone who
helped make my first go at Sebring just like any other Florida Region track event.
Which I can honestly say is nothing short of Spectacular.
The Florida Region keeps getting better all the time because of people like
you. Please e-mail or call or fax me anytime with comments and feedback on what
you see, Good or bad..... I’ll let you read on..... Fly safe..... Jay.
A TRADITION OF SERVICE
Back when Ferrari first entered the US marketplace, he was
there. Then, when Ferrari bought the US import rights, he was
there as well. And, when the Ferrari dealer network really began
to build all across the country…yes, he was there then, too.
You might say that Joe Yuliano has been around. Now he’s
back in Florida as the Shelton Ferrari - Maserati Service
Manager. And that’s a good thing.
After earning a degree in Automotive Technology, one of
Joe’s former instructors referred him to Chinetti / Garthwaite out
of Paoli, Pennsylvania, one of the country’s first Ferrari
importers. Joe worked with the company until 1979 as a prep
mechanic, getting the cars ready for the growing list of North American enthusiasts.
Then, Ferrari purchased the import rights for the North American market, establishing
the foundation for what is Ferrari North America today. Joe worked with the budding
Ferrari organization here in the U.S. as the shop manager for the east coast, prepping
cars for the expanding network of dealerships.
Just two years later, Joe was tapped to become the Zone Technical
Representative for the Ferrari factory. He traveled throughout the country, handling just
about everything, from technical evaluations, warranty service, customer contact,
accident investigations and more. It was this broad foundation of experience and
expertise that cemented Joe’s lifelong career with Ferrari.
In 1994, Joe was an important member of the Shelton family as our service
manager. After another decade with Ferrari dealerships and repair shops in other parts
of the country, he has once again “come home.”
“I’ve spent literally half my life with Ferrari. I started with
the marque when it was a very young company here in the U.S.,
and I have grown as the company has grown over the years,” Joe
said. “Throughout my career, I’ve had the fortunate experience to
work hands-on with these cars in just about every situation, and
that has given me unique expertise that I am now able to bring to
S h e l t o n ’s clients throughout Florida and throughout the country. ”
The Shelton Service Department handles repairs, regular
maintenance and special service requests for up to 10 vehicles
at a time, all expertly handled by techs that are factorytrained
and certified. Joe has some special suggestions for
Ferrari owners this summer.
“The heat and humidity here in Florida means that
Ferraris need special attention over the coming months. Cooling
systems and brake systems should be flushed at least one a
year. And pay attention to those internal lights on your dashboard;
they are indicators for sophisticated monitoring systems
for your Ferrari, and can alert you to a potential issue before it
becomes a major problem. We are experts at diagnostic services,
and can pinpoint and correct anything that might be amiss
with your Ferrari,” Joe said.
For a Shelton Service Department appointment, please
give Chris Weeks in our Service Department a call at
954.493.5211 or 800.862.0858.

Monaco’s 2005
program (above), and
the altered poster
(below) in tribute to
Prince Rainier.
Monaco text
and photography by
Barry Paraizo.
MONACO 2005: F1AND THE FLORIDA REGION
The FCA Florida Region was well represented at the 63rd Grand Prix of
Monaco on May 22, 2005. El Presidente Jay Weitzel was there with wife Denise, Don
Bartz and his wife, Karen, and yours truly, Barry Paraizo with wife Linda.
The weather was gorgeous - high 70’s every day and cooler at night. We all
stayed at the Hotel Aria in Nice, a 5-minute walk from the train station and 10 minutes
from the beach. It was a 25-minute train ride back and forth to Monaco, except on race
day when there were thousands of extra people
riding the trains and it took 2 hours.
Our tickets were in grandstand K which
was right next to the headquarters of the
Automobile Club of Monaco, the organizers of the
race. we were directly across from the port where
all the mega yachts were moored watching the festivities.
Jay could swear he saw Jennifer Anniston
on one of the yachts!! Looking up the hill to our
right was the palace where hundreds of people
were lounging on the grass or in lawn chairs
watching the race. We had tickets for the practice
and qualifying sessions on Thursday and Saturday
and for the Grand Prix itself on Sunday.
For the first time since Formula One started
racing in monaco in 1980, Prince Rainier, who
died April 6, was not around to watch the race he
so cherished. The city fell silent for a moment of
respect before the start, with the drivers gathering
in front of Prince Albert and his sister Princess
Caroline.
Ferrari and Michael Schumacher were
certainly the crowd favorite, as anytime Michael
passed in front of us, everyone stood up and
cheered. Also, for every 5 booths of vendors selling
race paraphernalia, 4 were Ferrari. Most of the yachts as well were flying Ferrari
flags. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be - Michael (even though he had one of the
fastest qualifying laps on Thursday) started eighth. Despite running into David
Coulthard’s Red Bull car on lap 24 in a mishap caused by Christian Albers’ Minardi,
Michael was able, on the last lap, to pass his teammate Rubens Barrichello to finish in
7th position, 400ths of a second behind his brother Ralf. As you all know by now, the
winner was Kimi “the Iceman” Raikkonen in the West McLaren Mercedes.
Monaco and Nice are both great places to visit,
whether or not the Grand Prix is going on. There is much to see
and do, including HSH Prince Rainier's collection of fine automobiles,
the Palace, the Casino (ask Jay and Don why they
missed the last train back to Nice and had to take a taxi). There
was even time to catch the tail end of the Cannes Film Festival.
The Grand Prix of Monaco, the last true street circuit in
Formula One, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be
missed. Whether you stay in Nice or Monte-Carlo, whether you
watch from a yacht, an apartment balcony, or a grandstand, you
should go!! Don’t let anyone tell you it is too expensive - our tour
cost less than 10 days in Alaska! I would go again in a heartbeat
but if i never get to go again, I will die happy.
JULY 22-24, 2005, 2ND ANNUAL SUMMER SOIREE
A TRIBUTE TO CARLISLE MARSHALL
by Debbie Pyle
Once again, I have the sad duty of writing an article about a
person who enriched the lives of many and made numerous contributions
to the Florida Region of the Ferrari Club of America. Carlisle
Marshall, the fourth regional director of the Florida Region, passed
away on April 13th at his home in Jupiter.
I first remember meeting Carlisle in the spring of 1983.
Strangely enough this was the same event where I met Pat Godard. As
Jim and I were leaving the concours field Carlisle stuck his head in the
window of our 308 and thanked us for coming to the event and invited
us to attend an event at his home later in the year.
As I came to know Carlisle, I found that he loved all cars, not
just Ferraris. He had owned many classis cars and moved into Ferraris
in the early 80’s. Carlisle did a great deal of the work on his cars himself.
He would think nothing of painting a car by himself.
Carlisle was also a race fan. Upon visiting Ferrari’s race team
garage in Sebring in the 60’s he thought he was having a heart attack
as a result of seeing a GTO. He was so convinced of this that he had
his friends drive him to the hospital!
Under Carlisle’s leadership the Florida Region grew and prospered.
He had the vision to see that the region needed a newsletter
and thus was the birth of the Redline. As regional director he oversaw
the first FCA National in Florida in 1986 and served as registration
chairman for the 1993 National Meet.
Even though Carlisle moved away from Ferraris in the mid
90’s his interest in cars continued. In more recent years he could be
found at the Amelia Island Concours showing cars and talking cars with
his many friends.
His survivors include his wife Barbara, three sons; Craig,
Scott and Todd; and daughter Lisa. Carlisle Marshall will be missed by
all those who knew him as he was a great lover of people and cars.
FERRARIS ON THE TARMAC
It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, March 26th
when the sound of thunder filled the air at the Boca Aviation
Terminal at the Boca Raton Executive Airport. Only this time it
wasn’t weather related or the sound of jet aircraft landing and
departing. It was the sound of a few dozen Ferrari’s pulling onto
the tarmac for a memorable day of conversation, food, friends
(old and new) and the opportunity to view two of the finest private
aircraft available for fractional purchase through Marquis
Jet, along with the new Rolls Royce Phantom.
The event was generously sponsored by Ferrari Club
member Brad Goldfarb from Morgan Stanley’s Boca Raton office and
Adam Presser from Marquis Jet.
The day lent itself to members getting acquainted and showing off
their cars. Some of the discussions included whether their cars could out-run
the private jets from a stand still down the runway? Unfortunately, that
wasn’t included in the days planned activities (even though there is no
doubt who the winner would have been…and it wouldn’t have had a
tube-like silhouette). Of the 25-30 Ferrari’s, there was a wide assortment
of styles and colors…from the classic rosso 328 to the new
Scaglietti (actually the car was literally days old) in a beautiful Bordeaux.
The two private jets from NetJets/Marquis Jets were on display,
another sign of the good life. An “entry level” (great phrase for a
private jet aircraft) Cessna Citation and a Raytheon Hawker. NetJet
captains were on hand to discuss the capabilities of each of the aircraft
and attendees were permitted to board and be treated to the “whole experience”
(without leaving the hanger).
The goal of the event was to bring Ferrari Club members together
(with their significant others) for a day of mingling and getting to know each
other. Many members have requested non-track social events, and this
turned out to be a great day for all.
TECH TIPS
Don’t do it is the only answer I can come up with when asked by a Ferrari
owner about jump starting their Ferrari. Ferraris manufactured since the late
eighties have a draw on the battery that is considered normal and acceptable.
This is from automatic seat belts and other electric devices that are
part of the modern era. When the car is not use for two or three weeks it will
cause the battery to drain to the point of not starting the car. Batteries on
older Ferraris also discharge when left for longer periods of time. The solution
for a dead battery in most owners mind, is jump start the car, or call
someone to jump start the car and let the cars charging system recharge the
b a t t e r y. The first, and probably most dangerous, problem that can occur is
connecting the jumper cables reversed. I have personally seen this blow the
top off the battery and battery acid in the persons face that connected the
jumper cables incorrectly. Sensitive electronic equipment, such as the cars
computers, ECU’s, stereo system, ABS brake components and
many more will be damaged by incorrectly connecting the jumper
cables. As an example of the expense of some of these components,
the ECU that controls the ABS brakes of a 348 has a list
price of $3,934 and an alternator for the same car has a list
price of $1,159. If everything goes smoothly to this point and
you get the car started and running you still are overworking
the cars charging system. The charging system was not
meant to charge a dead battery. It was meant to replace the
electricity used to start the car and to keep the car running
once it starts. Many an alternator has been damaged by
being overworked trying to charge a dead battery. As an
alternative to jump starting your Ferrari when you find your
battery is dead I recommend you purchase a battery
charger and fully charge the battery before starting the
c a r. Even a small inexpensive battery charger is suff icient.
I like to use a charger marked automatic because
it cuts back the rate of charging as the battery becomes
charged. Even a ride on a flatbed truck to your favorite
Ferrari dealer or shop can look inexpensive when
compared to the cost of the electronic equipment that
can be damaged when jump starting your Ferrari.
AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE
The Amelia Island Concours celebrated its tenth anniversary in perfect style
under clear blue skies, with a stunning two hundred and eighty vehicle entry encompassing
everything from vintage motorcycles, through steam cars, pre WWII sporting
and luxury carriages for the gentry, the chrome and fins of the late fifties and early sixties,
to race cars of all eras.
The two main themes of this year’s gathering were Alfa Romeo, for which
there were five classes, with a wonderful diverse display of supremely elegant pre-
WWII models and an equally eclectic array of post-war models, whilst the racing theme
celebrated the cars of American racing legend, Bobby Allison, who was present and
honoured as Grand Marshall of the event.
The cars representing the
career of Bobby Allison showed just
what a diverse talent he was, with
humble beginnings on the dirt tracks
of the southern states, to legendary
wins in NASCAR in a driving career
spanning over thirty years, with races
in touring cars, CanAm and the
Indianapolis 500 along the way. T h e r e
were also superb examples of many
pre-war American and European “carriages
for the gentry” including the
likes of Auburn, Cadillac, Cord,
Duesenberg, Lincoln, and Packard on
the USA side, with Bentley, Bugatti,
Delahaye, Hispano Suiza, Mercedes
Benz and Rolls Royce amongst those
representing Europe. The Best of
Show award for a touring car went to
a 1931 Bugatti Type 51 from the
Nethercutt Collection, but it must
have been a difficult choice for the
judges, as the overall standard of
cars presented was extremely high.
There was even a class for rear
engine sedans, which brought out
some real rarities, including a quite
futuristic 1936 Stout Scarab, a 1948
Tucker Torpedo and a Tatra T87 from
the same year, but perhaps the
strangest confection in this group was the 1974 Fascination, a bizarre red and white
creation looking like a jet fighter shorn of its wings!
If competition cars were your scene, then you were not forgotten, as apart
from the offerings within the manufacturers already mentioned, there were a number
of nice examples spread around the concours lawn, like the Sunoco Lola T70, a Ford
GT40, or the fresh out of a no expense spared restoration 1953 Porsche 550 Carrera
Panamericana coupe, which won the competition car Best of Show award.
For Ferrari enthusiasts there was a small but select display of models in the
Ferrari class ranging from a 166 MM barchetta to a 330 GTC, with two more examples
in the sports racing groups, including the rarely seen in public Dino 206 S
berlinetta, chassis # 012, resplendent in the Maranello
Concessionaires racing livery of red with a Cambridge blue
band. Then there was the trio of 250 GT models, the beautiful
metallic blue 250 GT S1 PF Cabriolet of Peter Kalikow, a brilliant
yellow 250 GT SWB Berlinetta and the flowing 250 GT
SWB “Speciale”, featuring a 400 SAstyle body in aluminium on
a 1961 competition chassis, looking superb in silver which
accentuated the lightness of the design.
The RM Auction on the Saturday also featured some
Ferraris amidst the lots, with two notable sales, the 166 MM
Barchetta for $1.76 million, and the 365 GTB/4C for $1.98 million,
both figures including buyer’s premium. Closer to most people’s
wallet limitations was a 1976 fibreglass 308 GTB, which
looked like new and was reportedly a completely original example
with only 1400 miles on the clock, which found a new home
at $46,200 including buyer’s premium, whilst a federalized two
owner European Dino 246 GT achieved $60,500.
This year’s gathering once again provided a real treat
for the classic car enthusiast, with the truly superb array of
machinery gathered at the Amelia Island Ritz Carlton.

THE CELEBRATION FESTIVAL OF EXOTIC CARS AND THE DELOREAN GUY
Having just returned form the Celebration
show I have to say if you weren’t there you missed a
great time. Jeff Ippoliti, with the able assistance of his
brother Jim, has put together a great show. In only the
second outing the concours has turned into a not to be
missed event. To top it off it is for a great cause, the
Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The town of Celebration reminds one of
Stepford, and being that close to Disney it kind of
makes you wonder. I checked out the locals and they
did appear to be humanoid after all! One of our number
questioned if I thought they measured the length of the
grass before they cut it and my reply was “yep.” All that
aside, the setting is spectacular. Closing the streets
down to show off exotic cars, mostly Ferraris, is a sight
to behold. In the event you get tired of checking out the
hardware in the streets there are numerous shops and
restaurants to tantalize your fancy.
When I first heard that there would be other
makes of cars at this show I must say I was somewhat
d i s a p p o i n t e d . H o w e v e r, after attending the last two
years I am very glad there are other cars there.
Sometimes, we as Ferrari owners, become somewhat
tunnel vision bound. Looking at and admiring other
makes of cars can be an interesting and fun experience.
This revelation brings me to the DeLorean part
of my article. Now I know when you read the title you
were thinking “what does she know about DeLoreans?”
Well the answer to that question is “not much.” I know
that when I look at one I tend to think about a kitchen
sink in my first house that I promptly removed.
However, something very interesting happened this
year at Celebration. Like last year there was a
DeLorean class. The night before the show a guy was
working happily curbside on his stainless steel beauty
as Jim and I sat in front of a café and watched his
progress. Folks would come up and talk with him
about his car and he would tell them the history of the
make in general and his car in particular with a great
deal of pride. Simply put, this guy loved his car! He got
a great deal of pleasure in caring for his DeLorean and
talking with others about his car. I didn’t see him on
Saturday, but I would be willing to bet he also enjoyed
showing his baby. His mood was infectious! Heck, I
almost wanted to have a DeLorean by the time we left!
The long and short of this is that sometimes you get the
idea that you have to have the biggest or the best or the
most expensive toy on the block to have the most fun.
Well, that just isn’t so. The DeLorean guy at
Celebration was having a blast and my hat is off to him!
