daughter <strong>of</strong> William Lord Rutlvren, was first styled Lord INCHAFFRY, being Commendatory<br />

<strong>of</strong> that Abbacy, and tifterwards created Lord MADERTV, by King James<br />

VI. in the year 1607. He married Jean, daughter to Sir James Chisholm <strong>of</strong> Crom-<br />

licks, and with her got the lands <strong>of</strong> Innerpeffry, which were her mother's portion,<br />

being heiress <strong>of</strong> Sir John Drummond <strong>of</strong> Innerpeffry. He had by his said lady two<br />

sons, John Lord Maderty, and Sir James the first Laird <strong>of</strong> Machony. The achievement<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Lord Maderty is, or, three bars unde gules, and, oil a canton argent, a<br />

lion's head erased, within a double tressure counter-flowered gules ; crest, a falcon<br />

proper, armed, chessed, and belled or; supporters, two savages proper, holding<br />

clubs over their shoulders, wreathed about the head and middle with laurels, stand-<br />

ing upon a hill seme <strong>of</strong> gall-traps : and for motto, Lord have mercy.<br />

Sir JAMES DRUMMOND <strong>of</strong> Machary, descended as above, carries the same with<br />

the Lord Maderty, with a crescent for a brotherly difference ; crest, a falcon hood-<br />

ed, chessed, and belled, proper: motto, Prius mori quam fidem fuller e.<br />

WILLIAM DRUMMOND, Viscount <strong>of</strong> STRATHALLAN, Lord Drummond <strong>of</strong> Cromlicks,<br />

eldest son <strong>of</strong> William Drummond, a younger son <strong>of</strong> John second Lord Maderty,<br />

was a Lieutenant-General in Muscovy ; and, upon his return home, was advanced,<br />

for his merit, to the like post in Scotland ; and, by King James VII. created Viscount<br />

<strong>of</strong> Strathallan. He was succeeded to that same title <strong>of</strong> honour by his son<br />

William, who also succeeded to the last Lord Maderty, who died without heirsmale<br />

<strong>of</strong> his body ; and carried, for arms, quarterly, first and fourth or, three bars<br />

waved gules, for Drummond ; second and third or, a lion's head erased gules, within<br />

a double tressure flowered and counter-flowered <strong>of</strong> the last, as a coat <strong>of</strong> augmen-<br />

tation ; crest, a goshawk with wings displayed, proper; motto, Lord have mercy ;<br />

supporters as the Earl <strong>of</strong> Perth, without the compartment. In some paintings, his<br />

crest is a falcon standing upon one foot, and holding up with the other a garland<br />

<strong>of</strong> laurel : with the motto, Virtutem coronal honos.<br />

Sir JOHN DRUMMOND <strong>of</strong> Logiealmond, as a third son <strong>of</strong> John second Earl <strong>of</strong> Perth,<br />

the arms <strong>of</strong> Drummond, within a bordure \va\edgules; crest, a dexter arm from<br />

the shoulder holding a broad sword : and for motto, Nil- timeo. N. R.<br />

JOHN DRUMMOND <strong>of</strong> Colquhalzie, descended <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Perth, or, three bars<br />

waved gates, and, in chief, as many stars azure; crest, a turtle dove standing on<br />

the top <strong>of</strong> a rock, proper; with the motto, Sto mobilis. N. R.<br />

JOHN DRUMMOND <strong>of</strong> Pitkellanie, descended <strong>of</strong> Concraig, or, three bars unde, and,<br />

in chief, a boar's head erased gules, for Chisholm <strong>of</strong> Cromlicks, with whom this family<br />

matched ; crest, a sword and garb, proper, placed saltier- ways : motto, Et<br />

narte fc? arte. N. R.<br />

Mr JAMES DRUMMOND <strong>of</strong> Cultmalundy, descended <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Perth, or, three<br />

bars waved gules, in the centre a man's heart counter-changed <strong>of</strong> the same ; crest,<br />

a hand grasping a. man's heart, proper : motto, Cum corde. N. R.<br />

Mr DAVID DRUMMOND, sometime Minister at Monedie, a younger son <strong>of</strong> Col-<br />

quhahie, carried as Colquhakie, all within a bordure gules, for his difference ; crest,<br />

an anchor in pale, and a dove standing on the top <strong>of</strong> it : with the motto, Spes mea<br />

res mea. N. R.<br />

GEORGE DRUMMOND <strong>of</strong> Carlowrie, or, three bars waved gules, and, for a brotherly<br />

difference, a mullet surmounted <strong>of</strong> an annulet ; crest, a dexter hand holding a<br />

curling stone : with the motto, Have at all.<br />

Sir GEORGE DRUMMOND, sometime Provost <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, or, three bars waved,<br />

and, in chief, a martlet betwixt two crescents gules ; crest, a pheon or: motto, Con-<br />

sequitur quodcunque petit.<br />

GAVIN DRUMMOND, descended <strong>of</strong> Kildies, who was a cadet <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Pit-<br />

kellunie, or, three bars unde gules, over all a naked man naiant in pale, grasping<br />

in his dexter hand a sword, and having his sinister hand and feet in action, all<br />

proper ; crest, a dexter hand holding a spear, proper : motto, Per mare per terras.<br />

within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the last, charged with eight crescents <strong>of</strong> the first ;<br />

and for crest,<br />

three stars placed in cheveron or : motto, Ad astra per ardua. N. R.<br />

The ancient family <strong>of</strong> GREY, Earls <strong>of</strong> KENT in England, now Dukes <strong>of</strong> Kent,<br />

carry barry <strong>of</strong> six, argent and azure , for their paternal coat. And Grey Earl <strong>of</strong>
