OF THE BAR.<br />

Lindsey, and honoured with the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Great Chamberlain <strong>of</strong> England, which is<br />

hereditary to the family since the death <strong>of</strong> Henry tie Vere Earl <strong>of</strong> Oxford, and,<br />

afterwards, with the title <strong>of</strong> Marquis <strong>of</strong> Lindsey, 1706. The first <strong>of</strong> this family is<br />

said to be one LEOPOLD DE BERTIE, Constable <strong>of</strong> Dover Castle, in the time <strong>of</strong> King<br />

EtheJred, whose ancestors are said to have come from Bertiland, on the borders <strong>of</strong><br />

Prussia, with the Saxons. The above arms they quarter with those <strong>of</strong> Willoughby,<br />

being or, a fret azure. There are several noble branches <strong>of</strong> this family, as<br />

BERTIE Earl <strong>of</strong> ABINGDON, as in the Peerage <strong>of</strong> England, who carries the same arms,<br />

with an annulet, for his difference.<br />

BLAZONS BELONGING TO THE CHAPTER OF THE BAR.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> HARE with us, azure , two bars, and a chief indented or.<br />

Sir THOMAS HARE <strong>of</strong> Howburdolph, in Norfolk, Baronet, gules,<br />

two bars and a<br />

chief indented or.<br />

KIRBY <strong>of</strong> Kirbyhall, in Lincolnshire, argent, two bars and a canton gules, charged,<br />

with a cross moline or.<br />

Or, three bars azure, these were anciently the arms <strong>of</strong> one FULK DE OYRAY, an<br />

English Baron, whose only daughter and heiress was married to one <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong><br />

Constable, who assumed the arms <strong>of</strong> the said Fulk, his father-in-law ; and from him<br />

was lineally descended Henry Lord Constable <strong>of</strong> Halsham, who carried the same<br />

arms as his paternal ones. He was, by King James I. <strong>of</strong> Great Britain, created<br />

Viscount <strong>of</strong> D unbar, 1621.<br />

FOTHERINGHAM <strong>of</strong> Lawhill, a second son <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Powrie, ermine, three<br />

bars gules, and, for his difference, charges each bar with a buckle or ; crest, a grif-<br />

fin's head couped, proper : motto, Be it fast.<br />

FOTHERINGHAM <strong>of</strong> Bandon, another younger son <strong>of</strong> Powrie, carries the arms <strong>of</strong><br />

the family within a bordure gules, for difference ; crest, a griffin's head erased,<br />

.proper : motto, Be it fast. Both matriculated in the Lyon Register.<br />

The Right Honourable JOHN Earl <strong>of</strong> MELFORT, second son <strong>of</strong> James Earl <strong>of</strong> Perth><br />

and his lady Anne Gordon, eldest daughter to George, second Marquis <strong>of</strong> Huntly,<br />

and Lady Anne Campbell, daughter to Archibald Earl <strong>of</strong> Argyle. John, before<br />

he was dignified with any titles <strong>of</strong> honour, married, first, Sophia Lundin, heiress<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lundin, and with her had issue ; secondly, he married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Tho-<br />

;nas Wallace <strong>of</strong> Craigie, sometime one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice,<br />

md Lord Justice Clerk, and with her he has issue. He was first made Constable<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Castle <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, and Master <strong>of</strong> the Ordnance ; he was a Privy Coun-<br />

cilor, and soon after made Secretary <strong>of</strong> State by King<br />

Charles the II. and was<br />

continued in that post by King James VII. who farther honoured him with the ti-<br />

tle <strong>of</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Melfort, Viscount <strong>of</strong> Forth, Lord Drummond <strong>of</strong> Riccarton, Castle-<br />

main, and Glaston. His armorial bearing, quarterly, first and fourth or, three bars<br />

waved gules, for Drummond ; second and third or, a lion rampant within the dou-<br />

ble tressure, flowered and counter-flowered with flower-de-luces gules, all within a<br />

bordnre gobonated, argent and azure, the arms <strong>of</strong> LUNDIN <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, as descended<br />

<strong>of</strong> a natural son <strong>of</strong> William King <strong>of</strong> Scotland.<br />

The royal bearing, within the foresaid bordure, was granted by a special conces-<br />

5 on <strong>of</strong> King Charles II. under his royal hand, to John Laird <strong>of</strong> Lundin, (afterward^<br />

Karl <strong>of</strong> Melfort), the tenor <strong>of</strong> which concession, or allowance,<br />

~\\ THEREAS by a declaration, under the hand <strong>of</strong> our Lyon-Depute, in our<br />

VV ancient kingdom <strong>of</strong> Scotland, bearing date the ad <strong>of</strong> September last, it<br />

doth appear to vis, that it is sufficiently instructed, by original charters and other<br />

ancient documents, that the ancient family <strong>of</strong> Lundin, (or London),<br />

in our said<br />

kingdom, is lineally descended <strong>of</strong> Robert <strong>of</strong> London, natural son <strong>of</strong> William the<br />

Lion King <strong>of</strong> Scotland, and brother to King Alexander IL and that in regard <strong>of</strong>
