azure, a cheveron between three cross pates argent, for Barclay ; supporters, twa<br />
grey-hounds, proper ; and for crest, the beast ermine; with the motto, Sine labe<br />
nota.<br />
CRAWFORD <strong>of</strong> Auchinames, an ancient family in the shire <strong>of</strong> Renfrew, a branch<br />
<strong>of</strong> Crawfurd <strong>of</strong> Loudon, as in Crawfurd's History <strong>of</strong> Renfrew, who says the family<br />
carried argent, two spears saltier- ways, between four spots <strong>of</strong> ermine ; but Balfour,<br />
in his Blazons, says, Crawfurd <strong>of</strong> Auchinames, carried gules, a fesse ermine, surmounted<br />
<strong>of</strong> two lances in saltier argent.<br />
CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> Haining, gules, a fesse ermine, betwixt two stars in chief, and a<br />
hart's head couped in base or, Workman's MS. And John Crawfurd, sometime<br />
Dean <strong>of</strong> Guild in Linlithgow, descended <strong>of</strong> Haining, carries, as in the Lyon Register,<br />
gules, a fesse ermine, betwixt two mullets in chief argent, and a hart's head<br />
cabossed in base or, attired sable; crest, a hart's head couped proper : motto, Hue-<br />
tt'iius invictus.<br />
CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> Lefnoris, or Lochnoris, gules, a fesse ermine, and in chief two star.-;<br />
-jr ; so illuminated in the house <strong>of</strong> Fala-hall.<br />
CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> Ardmillan, alias <strong>of</strong> Bedland, descended <strong>of</strong> Crawfurd <strong>of</strong> Loudon,<br />
gules, on a fesse ermine, between three mullets argent, two crescents interlaced ot<br />
the field . and for motto, Durum patientiafrango.<br />

HENRY CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> Easter Seaton, descended <strong>of</strong> Kilbirny, gules, a fesse waved<br />
ermine, between three mullets argent, pierced azure ; crest, an increscent cheque,<br />

THOMAS CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> Jordanhill,<br />
a younger son <strong>of</strong> Laurence Crawfurd <strong>of</strong> Kilbirny,<br />
carried the quartered arms as his father, Crawfurd and Barclay ; but under<br />
the fesse, for his difference, he had two swords in saltier, answerable to his milita-<br />

CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> Cartsburn, a second son <strong>of</strong> Crawfurd <strong>of</strong> Jordanhill, gules, a fesss<br />
ermine, between three mullets in chief argent, and, in base, two swords saltier-ways<br />
proper, hiked and pommelled or, all within a bordure waved <strong>of</strong> the third ; crest, a<br />
sword erect in pale, having a pair <strong>of</strong> balances on the top or point, all proper : mot-<br />

CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> Cloverhill, gules, a fesse ermine, between three crows argent ; crest,<br />
a : garb proper motto, God feeds the crows.<br />
JOHN CRAWVURD <strong>of</strong> Crawfurdland, gules, a fesse ermine ; and for crest, a marble<br />
pillar supporting a man's heart, proper : motto, Slant innixa Deo.<br />
All these blazons <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Crawfurd are so recorded in the Register <strong>of</strong><br />
our Lyon Office. I proceed to give examples <strong>of</strong> bearing the fesse names, which are to be found there, and other Books <strong>of</strong> Blazon.<br />

The achievement <strong>of</strong> the Right Honourable the Earl <strong>of</strong> HYNDFORD, argent,<br />
a fesse<br />
tortille, azure and gules, timbred with crown, helmet, and mantlings befitting his<br />
quality, and issuing out <strong>of</strong> a wreath <strong>of</strong> his tinctures, an arm in armour holding a<br />
broken spear, all proper ; supported, on the right, by a man in complete armour,<br />
holding in his right hand a batton royal, all proper ; and, on the left, by a horse<br />
argent, furnished gules ; and, over all, on an escrol, for motto, Toujours pret, as<br />
;n the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements : Where may be seen, also, the achievement <strong>of</strong> his<br />
brother-german, WILLIAM CARMICHAEL, Esquire, Advocate, who carries as his brother<br />
the Earl, within a bordure ermine, for his difference ; crest and motto as<br />
the Earl.<br />
CARMICHAEL <strong>of</strong> Balmeady, or, a fesse wreathed, azure and gules, charged with a<br />
crescent argent.<br />
Balfour's Manuscript.<br />
The first <strong>of</strong> this family was one Captain CARMICHAEL <strong>of</strong> the Castle <strong>of</strong> Crawford,<br />
>o designed in our Histories, who married the Countess Dowager <strong>of</strong> Angus, in the<br />
icign <strong>of</strong> King James III. and got the heritable Bailiery <strong>of</strong> the regality<br />
'icthy.<br />

CARMICHAEL <strong>of</strong> Balmblae, descended <strong>of</strong> Balmeady, argent, a fesse wreathed,<br />
nzure and gules, within -an orle <strong>of</strong> eight crescents <strong>of</strong> the last, Mackenzie's Herald-<br />
But, in the New Registers, a bordure <strong>of</strong> the second, charged with eight crescents<br />
<strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a woman's head and neck issuing out <strong>of</strong> the wreath : mot-<br />
