LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Covington carried below the fesse cheque in base a mascle or. All<br />
those are in Sir James Balfour's Blazons : But Mr Thomas Crawfurd's Manuscript<br />
gives the fesse cheque <strong>of</strong> Lindsay <strong>of</strong> Covington, between three muscles argent.<br />
L'INDSAY <strong>of</strong> Dowhill, an ancient family <strong>of</strong> the name, as in an illuminated manuscript<br />
in the reign <strong>of</strong> Queen Mary, gules, a fesse cheque, argent and azure, a star <strong>of</strong><br />
the second in chief.<br />
LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> the Mount, who was Lyon King at Arms, gules, a fesse chequS, argent<br />
and azure, between three stars in chief, and a man's heart in base argent.<br />
Sir ALEXANDER. LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Evelick, baronet, descended <strong>of</strong> the old Earls <strong>of</strong> Craw-<br />
ford, bears the quartered arms <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford, within a bordure argent.<br />
And WILLIAM LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Kilspindy, brother to Evelick, carries the same ; but<br />
charges the bordure with eight roses gules, recorded in the Lyon Register.<br />
JAMES LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Cavill bears first and fourth gules, a fesse cheque, argent and<br />
azure, for the name Lindsay ; second and third or, a lion rampant, gules bruised<br />
with a ribbon sable, for Abernethy, being the armorial bearing as before <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford, within a bordure quartered or and gules, charged with eight<br />
martlets counter-changed ; for crest, an ostrich head erased, proper : motto, Sis<br />
fords.<br />

HENRY LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Cairnie, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Pitcarly, quarterly, first<br />
and fourth gules, a fesse cheque within a bordure componed, argent and azure,<br />
second and third, Abernethy, as before ; crest, two stalks <strong>of</strong> wheat disposed saltierways,<br />

JOHN LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Pitscandly, gules, a fesse cheque, argent and azure, a durk or<br />
dagger paleways in base, proper ; and in chief, a mullet for difference. L. R.<br />
WILLIAM LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Culsh, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Dowhill, gules, a fesse<br />
cheque, argent and azure, in chief, a mullet <strong>of</strong> the second, and the base wide as<br />
the third, all within a bordure ingrailed or, for difference ; crest, a tower, proper,<br />
ensigned on the top, with a crescent argent: motto, Firmiter maneo. L. R.<br />
The surname <strong>of</strong> CRAWFURD, anciently gave for arms, gules, a fesse ermine. And<br />
others <strong>of</strong> that name gave argent, a stag's head, erased gules* I shall here give the<br />
arms <strong>of</strong> those Crawfurds who carry the fesse ermine.<br />
CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> London, gules, a fesse ermine; which family, ending in an heiress,<br />
was married to Sir Duncan Campbell, who were progenitors <strong>of</strong> the noble family <strong>of</strong><br />
Campbells Earls <strong>of</strong> Loudon ; upon which account half <strong>of</strong> their girons are ermine,<br />
<strong>of</strong> which before.<br />
LAURENCE CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> Kilbirny, the male representative <strong>of</strong> Crawford- John,<br />
carried gules, a fesse ermine; he, in the year 1528, excambed part <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong><br />
Crawford-John, with Sir James Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Finart, for the lands <strong>of</strong> Drumray, in<br />
the shire <strong>of</strong> Dumbarton, which continues with his descendants, by the title <strong>of</strong><br />
Lord DRUMRAY. He quartered the arms <strong>of</strong> Barclay <strong>of</strong> Kilbirny, as his grandfather<br />
John Crawfurd <strong>of</strong> Kilbirny did ; upon the account his rather Malcolm Crawfurd<br />
<strong>of</strong> Garnock married Marjory, daughter and sole heir <strong>of</strong> John Barclay, Baron <strong>of</strong><br />
Kilbirny, in the reign <strong>of</strong> King James III. and got with her that barony ; who carried<br />
azure, a cheveron betwixt three cross pates argent.<br />
Sir JOHN CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> Kilbirny, lineally descended from them, who for hi-<br />
loyalty to King Charles II. was made a knight-baronet, he left behind him onlytwo<br />
daughters ; Anne, the eldest, married to Sir Alexander Stewart <strong>of</strong> Blackball,<br />
and bore to him Sir Archibald <strong>of</strong> Blackball, and his brother Mr Walter Stewart,<br />
advocate, who carries his paternal coat as before, within a bordure ermine, for hidifference,<br />
upon the account <strong>of</strong> his mother, as in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements : The<br />
.second daughter was Margaret, on whom her father Sir John settled his estate,<br />
and to the heirs <strong>of</strong> her body ; obliging them to carry the surname <strong>of</strong> Crawfurd,<br />
with the arms : She married Mr Patrick Lindsay, second son <strong>of</strong> John Earl <strong>of</strong><br />
Crawfurd, to whom she had issue, three sons and as many daughters. John the<br />
eldest was created Viscount <strong>of</strong> GARNOCK, Lord Kilbirny, Kingsburn and Drumray,<br />
the loth <strong>of</strong> April 1703. He married Margaret Stewart, daughter to James Ea'rl<br />
<strong>of</strong> Bute ; she bore to him Patrick, the present Viscount <strong>of</strong> Gamock, who carries<br />
quarterly, first and fourth gules, a fesse ermine, for Crawfurd ; second and third
