azure, the paternal bearing <strong>of</strong> his lady, daughter and sole heir <strong>of</strong> Henry<br />
Fairfax <strong>of</strong> Hurst, Esq. whose father was second son <strong>of</strong> the Viscount Fairfax in<br />
England; and overall the quarters, by way <strong>of</strong> .surtout, an escutcheon, charged with<br />
his father's coat <strong>of</strong> augmentation for the lordship <strong>of</strong> Cardross, the whole adorned<br />
and for crest, issuing out<br />
with crown, helmet, and manthngs befitting his quality ;<br />
<strong>of</strong> a wreath, or and azure, a dexter hand holding a club, or batton, raguled proper;<br />
supported on the right side by an ostrich proper, one <strong>of</strong> the supporters <strong>of</strong> the<br />
ancient earls <strong>of</strong> Buchan, and on the left by a griffin gules, one <strong>of</strong> those <strong>of</strong> the earis<br />
<strong>of</strong> Marr : motto, that <strong>of</strong> his predecessors the earls <strong>of</strong> Buchan, Judge nought,<br />
the Plates <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

The younger sons <strong>of</strong> David Lord Cardross, father <strong>of</strong> the above Henry Lord Car-<br />

dross, carry the arms <strong>of</strong> their father, as in the Lyon Register,<br />
WILLIAM ERSKINE, sometime governor <strong>of</strong> Blackness Castle, and second son to<br />
David Lord Cardross, his father's arms within a bordure or.<br />
JOHN ERSKINE <strong>of</strong> Camock, third son, and some time governor <strong>of</strong> Stirling Castle,<br />
the same arms within a bordure, parted per pale, or and argent.<br />
CHARLES ERSKINE, fourth son to the said David Lord Cardross, the same within<br />
a bordure tierced in fesse, or, argent, and gules; crest and motto to all <strong>of</strong> them the<br />
same with that <strong>of</strong> the Lord Cardross, as above.<br />
CHARLES ERSKINE, Advocate, and one <strong>of</strong> the Commissioners <strong>of</strong> the Court o, Po-<br />
lice, brother-german to David now Earl <strong>of</strong> Buchan, and second son to Henry late<br />
Lord Cardross, carries the arms <strong>of</strong> his father Henry Lord Cardross, within a bor-<br />
dure ermine for difference ;<br />
crest and motto the same as his father.<br />
Sir WILLIAM ERSKINE <strong>of</strong> Brechin, who was Secretary to King James V. descended<br />
<strong>of</strong> Erskine <strong>of</strong> Dun, carried quarterly, as by his seals which I have seen, first and<br />
fourth Erskine <strong>of</strong> Dun, second and third argent, three piles issuing from the chief<br />
gules, for Brechin, but upon what account I know not : His representative is<br />
Erskine <strong>of</strong> Pittodrie.<br />
The Right Honourable ALEXANDER ERSKINE Earl <strong>of</strong> Kelly carries quarterly, first<br />
and fourth \gules, an imperial crown within a double tressure, flowered and coun-<br />
ter-flowered with flower-de-luces or, as a coat <strong>of</strong> concession, second and third ar-<br />
geqt, a pale sable for Erskine ; and for crest, a demi-lion gardant gules ; supporters<br />
two griffins or, armed gules, and on their breasts a crescent sable : with this<br />
motto, Decori decus addit avito. He is lineally descended <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas Erskine,<br />
second son to the Earl <strong>of</strong> Marr, who, with Sir John Ramsay, rescued King James<br />
VI. from the Farl <strong>of</strong> Cowrie's bad attempts anno 1600, for which he was honoured<br />
with the foresaid coat <strong>of</strong> augmentation, and created Lord Baron <strong>of</strong> Dirleton, then<br />
Viscount <strong>of</strong> Fenton, and afterwards Earl <strong>of</strong> Kelly, anno 1619.<br />
Sir JOHN ERSKINE <strong>of</strong> Alva, as a cadet <strong>of</strong> Erskine Earl <strong>of</strong> Marr, carries that earl's<br />
quartered arms as before, within a bordure quartered, or and vert ; and for crest, a<br />
dexter arm from the shoulder, in armour, grasping a sword, proper : with this motto,<br />
Je pense plus ; so matriculated L. R.<br />
Sir ALEXANDER ERSKINE <strong>of</strong> Cambo, Lord Lyon King at Arms, \vhose father Sir<br />
Charles, also Lyon King at Arms, was a second brother ol" the Earl <strong>of</strong> Kelly, car-<br />
ries that earl's quartered arms as before, with a crescent for a brotherly difference.<br />

JOHN ERSKINE <strong>of</strong> Balgounie, descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Marr,<br />
quarterly, first and fourth azure, a bend between six cross croslets fitched or,<br />
Mar ; second and third argent, a pale within a bordure sable. L. R.<br />

Captain PATRICK ERSKINE, in Colonel George Hamilton's regiment, third lawful<br />
son to David Erskine <strong>of</strong> Kirkbudclo, lineally descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Dun, quar-<br />
terly, first and fourth argent, a pale sable, for Erskine ; second and third gules, ;;<br />
sword pale-ways argent, hiked and pommelled or, for the name <strong>of</strong> Dun,<br />
all within<br />
a bordure embattled azure ; crest, a griffin issuing out <strong>of</strong> the wreath, holding in<br />
his dexter talon a sword, proper : motto, Ausim i$ confido.<br />

stand for the present Lyon Register, where the arms <strong>of</strong> our nobility and gentry<br />
have been recorded since the year 1662.<br />
