Archibald L'url <strong>of</strong> Douglas and Galloway the lands <strong>of</strong> Witliim-Glencorse, and se-<br />

\(j ral others, as appears by the charters <strong>of</strong> the family, with the gality<br />

bailiary <strong>of</strong> the re-<br />

<strong>of</strong> Eskdale: He had for his wife Mary Douglas, daughter to the said Earl.<br />

His son and successor was Simeon Glendonwyn, father <strong>of</strong> Bartholomew Glendunwyn,<br />

father <strong>of</strong> John, as by an account which I had from the present rcpreH-nter <strong>of</strong> the<br />

family; and that the family resided at Parton in the Me wart ry <strong>of</strong> Kirkcudbright ;<br />

from which afterwards they took the designation from the lands <strong>of</strong> 1'arton. And<br />

their descent runs thus:<br />

Which John was father <strong>of</strong> Ninian, who married Janet Dunbar; their son, John,<br />

married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Gordon <strong>of</strong> Lochinvar, who hud issue, Alexander, married to<br />

a daughter <strong>of</strong> Gordon <strong>of</strong> Troquhane ; and their son was Robert, who had for wife a<br />

his son<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Maxwell Lord Herries; and their son, John, was succeeded by<br />

Robert <strong>of</strong> Parton, who married Agnes Herries, <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Mabie, and with<br />

her had only a daughter, Agnes Glendonwyn, heiress <strong>of</strong> Parton, who was married to<br />

James Murray <strong>of</strong> Conhcath, who takes upon him the name and arms <strong>of</strong> Glendonwyn,<br />

and has issue a son, Robert Glendonwyn. The arms <strong>of</strong> the family are, quarterly,<br />

argent and sable, a cross parted per cross indented, and counter-changed <strong>of</strong><br />

the same ; crest, the sleeve <strong>of</strong> a coat upon the point <strong>of</strong> a sword : motto, Have faith<br />

in Christ. The same arms are to be seen carved upon their seat in the church <strong>of</strong><br />

Parton, in the year 1598; but there are placed several other figures on the cantons,<br />

which the cross makes ; on the first a goat's head, on the second a sword in bendsinister,<br />

on the third a boar's head, and on the fourth a fesse cheque, and in chief<br />

the sleeve <strong>of</strong> a coat, as by a draught <strong>of</strong> them sent to me by Mr James Ro\\<br />

minister in the parish church <strong>of</strong> Parton.<br />

DUNBAR <strong>of</strong> Machrimore, in Galloway,<br />

descended from the Dunbars <strong>of</strong> Enter-<br />

kin, a branch <strong>of</strong> the old family <strong>of</strong> Dunbars Earls <strong>of</strong> March. The first <strong>of</strong> this family<br />

who came to Galloway, was a second son <strong>of</strong> Enterkin n commonly called Long<br />

John <strong>of</strong> Enterkin; his son, Anthony Dunbar, was the first that purchased the<br />

barony <strong>of</strong> Machrimore from the M'Dowalls,. old possessors <strong>of</strong> these lands, in the<br />

year 1623; he married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Stewart <strong>of</strong> Phisgill, and with her had a son,<br />

John Dumbar, his successor, who married a daughter<strong>of</strong> John M'Dowall <strong>of</strong> Logan; his<br />

son and successor, Patrick Dunbar, was a member <strong>of</strong> Parliament for the<br />

stewartry<br />

<strong>of</strong> Galloway, in the reigns <strong>of</strong> King William and Queen Anne. He married a<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> M'Dowall <strong>of</strong> Freugh; his son and successor is the present Alexander<br />

Dunbar <strong>of</strong> Machrimore, married to a daughter <strong>of</strong> John Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Bardanoch,<br />

late bailie <strong>of</strong> his Majesty's palace <strong>of</strong> Holyroodhouse.<br />

The family <strong>of</strong> Machrimore has been in use to carry for arms, gules,<br />

a lion ram-<br />

pant or, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a bend azure, charged with three cushions <strong>of</strong> the second,<br />

all within a bordure argent, charged with eight cinquefoils <strong>of</strong> the first; crest, a<br />

lion's head erased, crowned with an open crown or: motto, Fortis 13 fulelis; as in<br />

Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

The ensign-armorial <strong>of</strong> THOMAS BROWN <strong>of</strong> Bonyton, in Mid-Lothian, near Edinburgh,<br />

is, or, on a cheveron betwixt three flower-de-luces azure, a besant<strong>of</strong>the<br />

first; crest, a ship under sail, proper: motto, Caute fc? sedule. L. R. and in Plate<br />

<strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

ANDERSON <strong>of</strong> Whitebrough, argent, on a saltier betwixt four stars azure, the<br />

sun in its splendour, proper; crest, a crescent argents motto, Ut crescit clarescit.<br />

CAMBBELL <strong>of</strong> Inveraw, commonly called MACKCONACHIE or MACK.DONACHIE <strong>of</strong> Inveraw,<br />

being a patronimical appellation, as the <strong>of</strong>fspring or son <strong>of</strong> Duncan; who,<br />

it seems, was the first descended from the ancient family <strong>of</strong> Argyle, before that<br />

noble family married the heiress <strong>of</strong> Lorn, and so bear only gironnt <strong>of</strong> eight, or and<br />

sable, within a bordure waved azure, and charged with eight salmons naiant<br />

argent, for difference, in reference to the river <strong>of</strong> Awe, upon which their lands and<br />

houses lie, which runs out <strong>of</strong> Lochow, where they have a considerable salmon<br />

fishing; crest, a hart's head, proper, in regard <strong>of</strong> the forest, or deer they have in<br />

the great mountain <strong>of</strong> Cruachan.<br />

Of this family are several branches, viz. Alexander Campbell <strong>of</strong> Kilmartin, Dou-<br />

gal Campbell <strong>of</strong> Shirvan, Colonel Patrick Campbell <strong>of</strong> the Horse-Guards, Captain<br />

Alexander Campbell <strong>of</strong> Brigadier Stanwix's Regiment, and many others,<br />
