Their son was John, who being young at his father's death, his grandfather the<br />

king took him into his own immediate care and protection, with ail ins fortune<br />

and goods. He married Mary, daughter <strong>of</strong> Patrick Graham Earl ol'Strathcrn, by<br />

whom he had<br />

Patrick, his son and heir, who was one <strong>of</strong> the hostages sent to England for the<br />

ransom <strong>of</strong> King James I. He married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander Ogilvie <strong>of</strong><br />

Auchterhouse, by whom he had three sons, Alexander his successor, John and<br />

William :<br />

Of the last were descended the Lyons <strong>of</strong> Easter and \Vester-Ogil.<br />

Which Alexander dying without issue, was succeeded by his brother, the abovenamed<br />

John, who married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir John Scrymgcour, constable <strong>of</strong> Dundee:<br />

By her he had John Lord Glammis, and David Lyon, the first <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong><br />

Cossins.<br />

John had two sons, George and John; George dying young, was succeeded by<br />

his brother John, who married Jean, daughter or I.. .liter <strong>of</strong> Angus ; and<br />

was succeeded by his son, John Lord Glammis, who married a daughter <strong>of</strong> William<br />

Earl Marischal, and with her had John his successor, and Sir Thomas Lyon <strong>of</strong><br />

Auldbar, Lord High Treasurer <strong>of</strong> Scotland, in the minority <strong>of</strong> 5 King Jame VL<br />

John Lord Glammis succeeded his father, a man <strong>of</strong> great parts and learning; he<br />

was preferred to be Lord High Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Scotland, 1575, but was unfortunately<br />

killed by a pistol-shot in a tumult upon the streets <strong>of</strong> Stirling, -jth <strong>of</strong> March 1577,<br />

to the great lamentation <strong>of</strong> the king and kingdom. He left behind him by hi.-><br />

lady, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Alexander Lord Abernethy <strong>of</strong> Salton, Patrick his son and heir,<br />

and several daughters.<br />

Patrick was created Earl <strong>of</strong> Kinghorn by King James VI. in the year 1606.<br />

He married Anne, daughter <strong>of</strong> John first Earl <strong>of</strong> Tullibardine, by whom he had<br />

John his successor, James Lyon <strong>of</strong> Auldbar, Frederick, <strong>of</strong> whom are the Lyons <strong>of</strong><br />

Brigton, and a daughter married to William Earl <strong>of</strong> Errol.<br />

John his son, second Earl <strong>of</strong> Kinghorn, married first a daughter <strong>of</strong> John Earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Marr, by whom he had no issue. And, secondly, he married Elisabeth, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Patrick first Earl <strong>of</strong> Panmure, by whom he had<br />

Patrick his son and successor, who, by the favour <strong>of</strong> his Majesty King Charles II.<br />

got a new patent <strong>of</strong> honour, to be styled Earl <strong>of</strong> Strathmore and Kinghorn. He<br />

married Helen, daughter <strong>of</strong> John first Earl <strong>of</strong> Middleton, by whom he had John<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> Strathmore, who married Elisabeth, daughter <strong>of</strong> Philip Stanhope Earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Chesterfield, <strong>of</strong> the Kingdom <strong>of</strong> England, by whom he had several sons and daughters,<br />

and Charles the present Earl <strong>of</strong> Strathmore.<br />

The achievement <strong>of</strong> this ancient and noble family, is, argent, a lion rampant<br />

azure, armed and langued gules, within the double tressure, flowered and counter-<br />

llowered <strong>of</strong> the last ; crest, a lady to the girdle, holding in her right hand the<br />

Royal Thistle, and inclosed within a circle <strong>of</strong> laurels, proper; in memory <strong>of</strong> the<br />

honour that family had in marrying King Robert II. 's daughter, with the motto,<br />

having gained the affection <strong>of</strong> King Robert II.'s daughter,<br />

he was much crossed in<br />

his match; but having at last obtained her, he took that crest, and the motto relative<br />

to it, supported on the dexter by an unicorn argent, armed, maned, and<br />

unguled or, and on the sinister by a lion rampant gules: Both which creatures do<br />

Having before treated <strong>of</strong> the lion, in all its various positions,<br />

I did, in page 283,<br />

give a memorial <strong>of</strong> two old families <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> M'Dowall, according to the<br />

documents then shown me ; amongst which I now understand, that the bond <strong>of</strong><br />

man-rent there mentioned, to have been given by John M'Dowall <strong>of</strong> Logan to<br />

Uthred M'Dowall <strong>of</strong> Garthland, with the alleged descent <strong>of</strong> Garthland's family, are<br />

very much controverted upon reasons contained in a protest taken by Robert<br />

M'Dowall <strong>of</strong> Logan, against Alexander M'Dowall <strong>of</strong> Garthland, and another protest<br />

lately taken against myself.<br />

The said Logan, since that time, has produced the following documents, viz. an<br />

instrument dated at Kilstay, the 8th <strong>of</strong> March 1579,<br />
