Having omitted some, ami others <strong>of</strong> late, who have t>, applied have their a,<br />
and memorials <strong>of</strong> their families inserted, after I have treated <strong>of</strong> such tigurvthey<br />
carry in their arms; so that I could not place them according to the method<br />
<strong>of</strong> this treatise, these not having occurred to me when I printed exam ,di<br />
figures, 1 was obliged here to add them before I put an end to this volume.<br />
Mr JOHN MITCHLL <strong>of</strong> Addiston, in Mid-Lothian, carries sable, a cheveron, ac-<br />
companied with three m ; crest, a stalk <strong>of</strong> wheat bladed and erected in<br />
pale, proper: motto, Crew, as in Workman's Manuscripts, and<br />
ments.<br />

The family <strong>of</strong> CRAiour.Ao, who have been in use to write their name Mitchel,<br />
and are <strong>of</strong> a good old standing, and <strong>of</strong> whom there are severals <strong>of</strong> the<br />
name descended <strong>of</strong> them in the West <strong>of</strong> Scotland. Alexander Mitchel <strong>of</strong> Craighead<br />
mia-rivd a daughter <strong>of</strong> Glass <strong>of</strong> Goldhenho<strong>of</strong>, which family is now designed <strong>of</strong><br />
Sauchie. Their son, Mr Thomas Mitchel, married Anna Graham, sister to Sir<br />
William Graham <strong>of</strong> Gartmore, baronet. Their son and successor is Mr John<br />
Mitchel <strong>of</strong> Acliston, who carries the above blazon, (Lyon Register) as lineal representer<br />
<strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Craighead ; he married Isabel, sister to William Borthwick<br />
<strong>of</strong> Johnstonbarn, formerly designed <strong>of</strong> Falahall, and has with her two sons, Walter<br />
and William Mitchels.<br />
CHANCELLOR, <strong>of</strong> Shieldhill, carries or, a linn rampant sable, armed and langued<br />
. a<br />
i-li'.<strong>of</strong> azure, three mullets <strong>of</strong> the first; crest, an eagle dispi >le: '<br />
motto, QJC fe surni'iKt,: L. R.<br />
As for the documents <strong>of</strong> this family, the oldest one in the custody <strong>of</strong> the present<br />
Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Shieldhill, which is a charter <strong>of</strong> confirmation granted by Thomas<br />
S-u'nervel Domains BaronuK de Carnivath, to George Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Quodquan, <strong>of</strong> half<br />
ol the lands <strong>of</strong> Quodquan; upon the said George his resignation <strong>of</strong> these lands, to<br />
be holden <strong>of</strong> the said Lord Somerville, as freely and honourably as his predecessors<br />
held the same <strong>of</strong> his lordship's predecessors, dated the 6th <strong>of</strong> March 1434. George<br />
Chancellor was succeeded by his son Alexander, and he got a new charter <strong>of</strong> the"<br />
above lands from John Lord Somerville, in anno 1460; his son and heir, George<br />
Chancellor, gets a charter from his superior the Lord Somerville <strong>of</strong> those lands,<br />
1472, wherein he is designed, Nobilis Vir Georgius Chanceler Dominus de Quodquan.<br />
He married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Dalhousie, and had with her a son, William,<br />
who was infeft and seised in the above lands, 1477: He had to wife Janet, daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Geddes <strong>of</strong> Rachan and Kirkurd, an old family in Tweeddale. He was succeeded<br />
by his son John, who was infeft the nth <strong>of</strong> April 1493, and his son and<br />
heir, Robert, nas infeft in the above lands 1529; he married Elizabeth, daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Brown <strong>of</strong> Coalston; and their son, William, was infeft the 26th <strong>of</strong> March 1533;<br />
he was designed <strong>of</strong> Quodquan. He had by his wife Margaret, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Hamilton<br />
<strong>of</strong> Dalserf, William Chancellor; he obtained decreet before the Lords <strong>of</strong><br />
Council and Session, 1566, against Denholm <strong>of</strong> Westshields, and Inglis <strong>of</strong> Eastshield,<br />
for non-entry duties, they being both vassals, and still continue. He married<br />
Agnes, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir James Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Crawfurdjohn, Baron <strong>of</strong> Evandale,<br />
and with her had Robert Chancellor; he took the title only <strong>of</strong> Shieldhill, and by<br />
Agnes Symington was father <strong>of</strong> John, who was infeft in the above lands 1605; he<br />
married Catharine, daughter <strong>of</strong> Gavin Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Raploch, and <strong>of</strong> Jean lu's wife,<br />
daughter and one <strong>of</strong> the co-heirs <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas Dishington <strong>of</strong> Ardross, and with<br />
her had Robert his son, heir and successor, who signalized himself in loyalty for<br />
King Charles 1. and II. and had the happiness to see the happy Restoration, before<br />
he died, in the year 1660, leaving issue by Jean his wife, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir James<br />
Lockhart <strong>of</strong> Lee, and Jean Auchinleck, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir George Auchinleck <strong>of</strong><br />
Balmanno, an ancient family in Perthshire, James Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Shieldhill. who<br />
succeeded his father, and was infeft in the year 1664; he died in 1704. and all his<br />
children, and was succeeded by his brother John, the present laird <strong>of</strong> Shieldhill,<br />
who has issue by his wife Jean, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir James Agnew <strong>of</strong> Lochnaw, and<br />
carries the above arms, as in Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
MAITLAND <strong>of</strong> Pittrichie, is an ancient cadet <strong>of</strong> the Maitlands <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane,<br />
(now Lauderdale) whose second son, upwards <strong>of</strong> 300 years ago, married the heiress<br />
<strong>of</strong> Schives, alias Gight, in Vlcecom. de Aberdeen', which fortune they possessed for<br />
a long time, and some <strong>of</strong> them were knighted, particularly<br />
