From Kenneth, the eldest, is come the family <strong>of</strong> Clunie, whicli was then and<br />

since known by the name <strong>of</strong> M'Ewen. Of John is come the family <strong>of</strong> Pitmean;<br />

and <strong>of</strong> Tillies, the third son, is come the family <strong>of</strong> Invereshie.<br />

After M'latosh had married the heiress, as above, and gotten possession <strong>of</strong> the<br />

estate, <strong>Clan</strong>ie's predecessors, and others <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Clan</strong>chatran, left Lochaber, and got<br />

lands in Badciioch, lor their special services to King Robert the Bruce; and, for<br />

killing Cumin Lord <strong>of</strong> Badenoch, they had these lands confirmed to them by King<br />

David II. They were then called <strong>Clan</strong>-Muriach, from their chief Muriach, and<br />

sometimes <strong>Clan</strong>-Pherson, from his ecclesiastical <strong>of</strong>fice, as parson <strong>of</strong> Kinguisse, from<br />

M'PHERSON <strong>of</strong> Clunie, chief <strong>of</strong> the name, carries parted per fesse, or and<br />

azure, a lymphad, or galley, with her sails trussed up, her oars in action <strong>of</strong> the<br />

first, in the dexter chief point a hand couped grasping a dagger, point upwards,<br />

gules, (for killing the Cumin) and in the sinister chief point a cross croslet fitched<br />

<strong>of</strong> the last; crest, a cat seiant, proper: motto, Touch not the cat, but the glove.<br />

The family has been in use to have their arms supported with two Highlandmen,<br />

with steel helmets on their heads, and cut out short<br />

bare,<br />

their shirt tied between them, and round targets on their arms, being the<br />

dress wherein those <strong>of</strong> this clan were wont to fight in many battles for the crown,<br />

being always loyal.<br />

M-PHER.SON <strong>of</strong> Pitmean, (as in the Lyon Register) descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong><br />

Clunie, carries parted per fesse invected, or and azure\ a lymphad, or galley, with<br />

her sails furled up, oars in action; in the dexter chief point a hand couped fesse-<br />

s, holding a dagger pale-ways, and in the sinister chief point<br />

a cross croslet<br />

fitched, all gules; crest, a cat seiant, proper: motto, Touch not the cat, but a glove.<br />

And in the same Register,<br />

M'PHERSON <strong>of</strong> Invereshie, descended <strong>of</strong> a third son <strong>of</strong> Clunie, carries as Clunie,<br />

v.'ithin a bordure g tiles ; crest and motto the same: Of late represented by Sir<br />

; eas M'Pherson, advocate, a man <strong>of</strong> bright parts, and a favourite <strong>of</strong> K<br />

James VII. He has issue a son named James, and a daughter, married to Sir John<br />

M'Lean <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, baronet, father and mother <strong>of</strong> the present<br />

Sir HECTOR M'LEAN, chief <strong>of</strong> the M'Leans, an ancient, loyal, potent clan, in<br />

the Highlands <strong>of</strong> Scotland, <strong>of</strong> which there have been very brave men. The<br />

acliievement <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> M'Lean, as illuminated in the Book <strong>of</strong> James Esplin,<br />

:chmont Herald, 1630, has four coats, quarterly, first argent, a rock gules; second<br />

argent, a dexter hand fesse-wavs couped gules, holding a cross croslet fitched<br />

in pale azure; third or, a lymphad snble; fourth argent, a salmon naiant, proper,<br />

and in chief, two eagles' heads erased nffronte gules; crest, a tower embattled<br />

argent: motto, Virtue mine honour. Which achievement is represented standing<br />

on a compartment, representing green land and sea. Out <strong>of</strong> the last issueth two<br />

selchs, proper, for supporters.<br />

In the same book are illuminated the arms <strong>of</strong> M'NniL, designed <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, or<br />

Bara, another ancient Highland family ; being also quarterly, and almost the same
