the heiress <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Bisset, and one <strong>of</strong> the heirs <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Fentons.<br />
The family was dignified with the title <strong>of</strong> Lord Lovat by King James I. the 3d <strong>of</strong><br />
March 1426.<br />
Hugh, or Hucheon Fraser <strong>of</strong> Lovat, sat as a lord in Parliament in the year 1430,<br />
<strong>of</strong> whom were descended the noble lords <strong>of</strong> that family. For their arms aL<br />
blazoned see Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
The other considerable family <strong>of</strong> the name was Sir ALEXANDER FRASER <strong>of</strong> Gowk-,<br />
said to be descended <strong>of</strong> another younger son <strong>of</strong> the abovementioned Sir Alexander,<br />
and his lady, sister to King Robert the Bruce. Sir Alexander Fraser is served<br />
heir in the lands <strong>of</strong> Cowie, the I3th <strong>of</strong> September 1361. He married Jean Ross,<br />
second daughter and one <strong>of</strong> the co-heirs <strong>of</strong> William Earl <strong>of</strong> Ross, and got with her<br />
the lands <strong>of</strong> 1'hilorth, which became the designation <strong>of</strong> the family; and from them<br />
the death<br />
was lineally descended Sir Alexander Fraser <strong>of</strong> Philorth ; to whom, by<br />
<strong>of</strong> Alexander Abernethy Lord Salton, who had issue, the honours devolved, being<br />
his sister's son, who, in right <strong>of</strong> his mother, was served heir to his grandfather tin-<br />
Lord Salton, and by King Charles II. declared Lord Salton, and approven <strong>of</strong> in<br />
Parliament 1670 ; whose great-grandson is the present Alexander Lord Salton, who<br />
carries, quarterly, first azure, three cinquefoils argent, 2 and i, for Fraser; second<br />
third argent,<br />
or, a lion rampant gules, bruised with a ribband sable, for Abernethy ;<br />
three piles issuing from the chief, conjoined in points gules, for Wishart, (these<br />
two last quarters were borne by Abernethy Lord<br />
Salton)<br />
and the fourth quarter<br />
as the first ; and the supporters, crest and motto, are also the same used by Aber-<br />
nethy Lord Salton, <strong>of</strong> which before.<br />
Sir PETER FRASER <strong>of</strong> Dores, Baronet, was descended from the abovementioned<br />
Sir Alexander Fraser, nephew to King Robert the Bruce, as by Mr Crawfurd's<br />
Peerage: The family has been in use to carry the plain arms <strong>of</strong> the name, \'vi..<br />
azure, three cinquefoils argent; and the same arms have been carried by Fraser <strong>of</strong><br />
Muchill.<br />
ANDREW FRASER Lord FRASER <strong>of</strong> Muchill was dignified with that title by King<br />
Charles I. 1633, and carried azure, three frases argent; crest, a mount full <strong>of</strong><br />
strawberries, leaved, flowered and fructuated, proper; supported on the dexter by a<br />
talcon, and on the sinister by a heron, proper: motto, All my hope is in God.<br />
HUGH FRASER <strong>of</strong> Belladrum, a second son <strong>of</strong> Culbeckie, who was a second son<br />
<strong>of</strong> Lovat, procreate betwixt him and Jean, daughter to the Earl <strong>of</strong> Huntly, carries,<br />
quarterly, as Lovat, within a bordure ingrailed and quartered, argent and<br />
gules; crest, a stag starting, proper, attired or: motto, Virtutis lavs actio. N. R.<br />
THOMAS FRASER <strong>of</strong> Strichen, descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong> Alexander Lord Lo-<br />
vat, and his wife, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir John Campbell <strong>of</strong> Calder, carries the quartered<br />
arms <strong>of</strong> Lovat, within a bordure gules; crest, a stag's head couped, proper: motto,<br />
Five ut postea vivas. Ibid.<br />
FRASER <strong>of</strong> Eskdale, descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong> Strowie, who was a second son<br />
<strong>of</strong> Lovat, the quartered coat <strong>of</strong> Lovat, within a bordure indented argent, charged<br />
with eight crescents gules ; crest, a stag's head couped, proper, attired or, and char-<br />
ged with an increscent and decrescent interlaced gules: motto, Vel pax vel helium.<br />

FRASER <strong>of</strong> Auchnagairn, a third son <strong>of</strong> Belladrum, carries his father's arms as<br />
before; and, for difference, charges the bordure with eight mullets,<br />
all counter-<br />
changed ; crest, a stag's head erased, proper, attired or, charged with a star <strong>of</strong><br />
eight rays, issuing from a crescent argent: motto, Pace & hello _ paratus. New<br />
Register.<br />
Mr SIMON FRASER <strong>of</strong> Fingask, fifth son <strong>of</strong> Belladrum, carries the same with Bel-<br />
ladrum; and, for difference, charges the bordure with eight<br />
annulets counter-<br />
changed; crest, as his brother, above: motto, Ubique paratus. Ibid.<br />
ALEXANDER FRASER <strong>of</strong> Tyrie, descended <strong>of</strong> James- Fraser, a second son <strong>of</strong> Phi-<br />
lorth, quarterly, first and fourth Fraser; second and third gules, a lion rampant<br />
argent, armed and langued sable, with a crescent, for a brotherly difference; crest,<br />
an ostrich holding in its beak a horse-shoe: motto, In God is all. Ibid.<br />
Mr PATRICK FRASER <strong>of</strong> Broaclland, as above, the quartered arms <strong>of</strong> Philorth,<br />
with a flower-de-luce for difference : motto, In God I trust. Ibid.
