with a rose gulcs, which he carried by way <strong>of</strong> surtout over his own arms. And<br />

William Lord Graham, when first dignified with the title <strong>of</strong> Earl ot" Montrose,<br />

quartered with his own, argent, three roses gules, for Montrose ; and the family<br />

being afterwards raised to the high titles <strong>of</strong> Marquis and Duke <strong>of</strong> Montrose, carry<br />

the same arms.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> WEDDERBURN (argent, a cheveron between three roses gules,<br />

barbed is from vert') the lands <strong>of</strong> Wedderburn, lying in the shire <strong>of</strong> Berwick ;<br />

which barony has been a long time possessed by the Humes, designed <strong>of</strong> Wedderburn,<br />

since the reign <strong>of</strong> Robert III. <strong>of</strong> whom before.<br />

KLACKADDER <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, sometime another ancient family in the shire <strong>of</strong> Berwick,<br />

azure, on a cheveron argent, three roses gules, which is now carried in the<br />

first quarter <strong>of</strong> the achievement <strong>of</strong> Hume <strong>of</strong> Blackadder, whose progenitor John<br />

Hume, fourth son <strong>of</strong> Hume <strong>of</strong> Wedderburn, who was killed at Flodden, married<br />

the heiress <strong>of</strong> Blackadder <strong>of</strong> that Ilk. See Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

BLACKADDER <strong>of</strong> Tulliallan, the heir-male <strong>of</strong> Blackadder <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, carried the<br />

foresaid arms <strong>of</strong> Blackadder. quartered in the first place with argent, three cre-<br />

scents gules, for marrying Edmondston, one <strong>of</strong> the co-heiresses <strong>of</strong> Tulliallan.<br />

mentioned, they are thus illuminated, quarterly, first and fourth or, three crescents<br />

gules ; second and third gules, on a cheveron argent, three roses <strong>of</strong> the<br />

KNOWS <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, gules, on a cheveron argent, three roses <strong>of</strong> the first. Workman's<br />

The lands <strong>of</strong> Lockerby have been for a long time possessed by some <strong>of</strong> the name<br />

<strong>of</strong> Johnston.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> JOUSEY or JOSSEY, argent, a cheveron between two roses in chief,<br />

But in our New Register, Mr ROBERT JOSSEY <strong>of</strong> Westpans, argent, a fesse between<br />

two stars in chief azure, and a hunting-horn in base sable, garnished gules ;<br />

JOHN JOSSEY, second brother <strong>of</strong> Westpans, carries the same ; but, for his difference,<br />

waves the fesse ; crest, the same as before : motto, Manuque. He being<br />

chirurgeon-apothecary in Edinburgh ; his son is the present laird <strong>of</strong> Westpans.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> CADZOW or CADYOW, argent, a cheveron between three roses gules.<br />

Otherwise, as in Font's Manuscript, argent, a cheveron sable, between two roses<br />

in chief gules, and a holly leaf in base vert.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> MERRY, argent, on a bend azure,<br />

a crescent betwixt two mullets<br />

<strong>of</strong> the first ; in the sinister chief point, three roses gules, growing out <strong>of</strong> one stalk,<br />
