Some say that the boar's head upon the cheveron is carried on the account that<br />
the heiress <strong>of</strong> these lands was married <strong>of</strong> old to one <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Gordon, who<br />
took upon him the name <strong>of</strong> Spotswood.<br />
Others say that the boar's head is carried as a sign <strong>of</strong> vassallage to the Gordons,<br />
who were over-lords and superiors <strong>of</strong> those lands.<br />

ALEXANDER CALUERWOOD, Bailie <strong>of</strong> Dalkeith, carries the same with Pittedy, but<br />
invects the saltier. His son, Sir William Caldervvood <strong>of</strong> Polton, is one <strong>of</strong> the pre-<br />
sent Senators <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice.<br />
The name <strong>of</strong> CARWOOD or CARVEWOOD, parted per fesse, sable and urgent ; on<br />
the first, a demi-man, proper, holding in his right hand a sword erect, and in<br />
the left, a carpenter's axe, all proper ; and in base, the branch <strong>of</strong> an oak tree<br />

WAITE <strong>of</strong> Rosehill, Advocate, argent, an oak tree growing<br />
out <strong>of</strong> a mount in<br />
base vert, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a fesse azure, charged with a crescent between two stars<br />
<strong>of</strong> the first.<br />
WATSON <strong>of</strong> Saughton, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Mid-Lothian, argent, an oak tree growing<br />
out <strong>of</strong> a mount in base, proper, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a fesse azure ; crest, two hands<br />
issuing out <strong>of</strong> clouds fesse-ways, holding the trunk <strong>of</strong> an oak pale-ways, with<br />
branches sprouting forth : motto, Insperata floruit . (N. R.) Pointing to the condition<br />
<strong>of</strong> the family, who being dispossessed <strong>of</strong> these lands upwards <strong>of</strong> an hundred<br />
years ago, they now enjoy the same again.<br />
DAVID WATSON 6f Craslat, sometime Provost <strong>of</strong> Dumbarton, argent, an oak tree<br />
eradicate in pale, proper, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a fesse sable ; crest, a dexter hand erect,<br />

ANDREW WATSON, Merchant in Aberdeen, argent, an oak tree growing out <strong>of</strong><br />
proper : motto, Confisus<br />

ANDREW WATSON, Merchant in Peterhead, carries the same as the last ; but<br />
charges his fesse with a floweiwle-luce between two mullets <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />
ALEXANDER WATSON <strong>of</strong> Wailace-Craigie, sometime Provost <strong>of</strong> Dundee, argent,<br />
an oak tree growing out <strong>of</strong> a mount in base, proper, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a fesse azure,<br />
charged with a cinquefoil between two stars <strong>of</strong> the first ; and the same is carried<br />
by his representative and grandchild, the present<br />
Alexander Watson <strong>of</strong> Wailace-<br />
Craigie ; and the same, with a suitable difference, is carried by John Watson<br />
Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine, a younger son <strong>of</strong> Alexander Watson, Provost <strong>of</strong> Dundee. Ibid.<br />
ALEXANUT.R WATSON <strong>of</strong> Glentarkie, Merchant and Burgess <strong>of</strong> Kirkcaldy, carries<br />
the same with the former, but has the fesse waved, and charged with the sail <strong>of</strong><br />
a ship urgent ; and, for crest, a ship under sail, proper : motto, Ad littora tendo.<br />

KVD <strong>of</strong> Craigie, urgent, a pine tree eradicate, proper, with a hunting-horn<br />
pendent upon one <strong>of</strong> the branches or, stringed gules. Mack. Her.<br />
WILLIAM KYD <strong>of</strong> Woodhill, a younger son <strong>of</strong> Craigie, carries the same ; and, on<br />
a chief azure, three mullets or, with a crescent for difference : motto, Donee irti-<br />
