Crows are likewise to be found in armories, as relative to the names <strong>of</strong> the bear-<br />

ers ; as those <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> CRAW, <strong>of</strong> whom betbre ; and CRAWFURD <strong>of</strong> Clovcrhill<br />

carries crows, .as additional figures to explain his name.<br />

The cock, the emblem <strong>of</strong> watchfulness, and herald <strong>of</strong> the approaching day, fre-<br />

quent in arms and devices ; and for its nature and royalty is cnsigned with a dia-,<br />

dem singular for its valour, and mirth after victory. Heralds .arc not wanting to<br />

make him represent a complete soldier, in courage and armour, cup-a-pee, making<br />

his comb to stand for a helmet, his chollars for a liu^k, his hooked bill for a falchion<br />

or cutlas, and his legs armed with spurs. When those are <strong>of</strong> a different<br />

tincture from his body, in blazon, he is said to be crested and barbed, (by some.<br />

English, mottled or je'lloped) the French, crette and barbele > and the Latins, cristatus<br />

i barbulatus ; and for his bill, legs and spurs, he is said to be arm-.d.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> COCK, in Scotland and England, carries cocks, relative to the<br />

name, ardent, a cock gules, on a chief azure, a crescent between two stars <strong>of</strong> the<br />

first. W. and P. MS.<br />

Others <strong>of</strong> the name, arpent, a cheveron azure, between three mullets in chief,<br />

and a cock in base gules.<br />

COCKBURN <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, an ancient family in the shire <strong>of</strong> Berwick, argent, three<br />

cocks gules.<br />

ALEXANDER COCKBURN <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, chief <strong>of</strong> the name, in the reign<br />

<strong>of</strong> Robert the<br />

Bruce, it seems had two wives ; the first bore him a son, who was laird <strong>of</strong> Ormiston,<br />

<strong>of</strong> whom immediately ; and for his second wife, he had the daughter and<br />

heiress <strong>of</strong> the Lord Weapont, and with her got the lands <strong>of</strong> Lanton and Caridden,<br />

upon which he gets a charter <strong>of</strong> confirmation <strong>of</strong> these lands from King David<br />

Bruce after which ; the family was designed <strong>of</strong> Lanton, and by his <strong>of</strong>fice (in King<br />

Robert ll.'s reign) Gustos Magni Sigilli ; and, by that king, Alexander. Cockburn de<br />

Lantoun was made Ostiarius Parliament ; which <strong>of</strong>fice continued in his successors,<br />

and afterwards was annexed to the barony <strong>of</strong> Lanton, by a charter <strong>of</strong> King<br />

James IV. 2oth <strong>of</strong> February 1504. Had. Collect, page 364.<br />

Upon a resignation <strong>of</strong> WILLIAM COCKBURN <strong>of</strong> Lanton, in that king's hands, in<br />

favours <strong>of</strong> his son and apparent heir Alexander Cockburn, <strong>of</strong> whom is lineally<br />

descended the present Sir Alexander Cockburn <strong>of</strong> Lanton, Baronet, who, as his<br />

progenitors, since they married with the Weaponts, carries, first quarterly, and<br />

fourth arge-nt, three cocks gules, for Cockburn ; second and third gules, six mascles<br />

or, 3, 2 and i, for Weapont; supporters, two lions gules; crest, a cock crowing:<br />

motto, Accendit cantu.<br />

COCK.BURN <strong>of</strong> Ormiston in East-Lothiam, argent, a fesse cheque azure, and <strong>of</strong> the<br />

first, between three cocks gules ; crest, a cock <strong>of</strong> the same : motto, In dubiis constant.<br />

(N. R.) In our old books there are, for supporters, two lions gules. The<br />

family is descended from John Cockburn, the eldest son <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander Cock,<br />

burn <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, by his first wife, as appears by these evidents ; an indenture or<br />

contract past betwixt Alexander de Lindsay Dominus de Ormistoun, and Alexander<br />

Cockburn ejusdem, " super matrimonio inter Johannem filium Alexandri Cockburn<br />

" prrcdicti, de prima uxore sua genitum, & Joanettam filiam & haeredem praedicti<br />

" Alexandri de Lindsay ;" for which the said Alexander Lindsay alienates and dispone<br />

to them, and the heirs-male or female procreate betwixt them, the lands<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ormiston, with the principal house and mill, which were confirmed by a charter<br />

<strong>of</strong> King David Bruce ; for which the family <strong>of</strong> Cockburn <strong>of</strong> Ormiston carries the<br />

fesse cheque,<br />

as come <strong>of</strong> the Lindsays. This John Cockburn <strong>of</strong> Ormiston, or his<br />

son. were constables <strong>of</strong> Haddington, which <strong>of</strong>fice was hereditary for a long time in<br />

the family.<br />

PATRICK COCKBURN <strong>of</strong> Ormiston, kept out the Castle <strong>of</strong> Dalkeith'for King<br />

. Jam II. against the Earl <strong>of</strong> Douglas, then a rebel. King James IV. grants a<br />

charter <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Ormiston, anno 1508, upon John Cockburn, elder <strong>of</strong> Ormiston,<br />

his resignation, in favours <strong>of</strong> his son John Cockburn, younger <strong>of</strong> Ormiston,<br />

and his ^p.n^e Margaret Hepburn, <strong>of</strong> whom is lineally descended the present<br />

ADAM COCKBURN <strong>of</strong> Ormiston, one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice ; and<br />

his Lordship was made Justice-Clerk an hundred years after one <strong>of</strong> his progenitors<br />

had been in the same honourable post.
