shire <strong>of</strong> Mid-Lothian, anno regni "jmo. <strong>of</strong> whom were descended the Lauders <strong>of</strong><br />
Hatton, who carried argent, a griffin salient sable, beaked and membred gules,<br />
holding a sword with its fore foot, supporting a Saracen's head, proper ;<br />
tower with a demi-griffin issuing out <strong>of</strong> the top <strong>of</strong> it : motto Strike alike.<br />

This family ended in an heir-female, in the reign <strong>of</strong> King Charles II. who was<br />
married to Mr Charles Maitland, brother-german to the Duke <strong>of</strong> Lauderdale. He<br />
was afterwards Earl <strong>of</strong> Lauderdale, grandfather to the present Earl <strong>of</strong> Lauderdale.<br />
LAUDER <strong>of</strong> Bass, originally from Lauder <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, carried gules, a lion rampant<br />
argent, within a double tressure flowered and counter-flowered with flower-de-luces<br />
or ; crest, a solon-goose sitting on a rock, proper : motto, Sub umbra alarum tunrum.<br />

ROBERT LAUDER gets a charter from William de Lamberton, Bishop<br />
<strong>of</strong> St An-<br />
drews, <strong>of</strong> the half <strong>of</strong> the Isle <strong>of</strong> Bass, reddendo unam libram ceras nomini Alba; firma-,<br />
which is confirmed by the charter <strong>of</strong> John Forfar, Prior <strong>of</strong> St Andrews, <strong>of</strong><br />
the date the 4th <strong>of</strong> June 1316.<br />
In a charter <strong>of</strong> Richard Edgar to Robert Edgar <strong>of</strong> Wedderlie, amongst the<br />
witnesses are, Johannes Haliburton Dominus de Dirleton, and Robertas Lawider<br />
Dominus de la Bass, in the year 1384.<br />
SIR ROBERT LAUDER, upon his resignation <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Balgone and Bass,<br />
and Edrington in the shire <strong>of</strong> Berwick, gets<br />

The only principal family <strong>of</strong> the name now standing is that <strong>of</strong> Sir JOHN LAU-<br />
DER <strong>of</strong> Fountainhall, in East-Lothian, Baronet, and one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Justice, who carries gules, a griffin rampant within a bordure argent ;<br />
crest, a tower argent, masoned sable, with the portcullis down, on the top <strong>of</strong> the<br />
embattlement, a man in a : watching posture motto, Turris<br />

two lions rampant argent, standing on a compartment, on which are these<br />
words, Ut migraturus babita, as in Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements. So recorded in the<br />
Lyon Register, as descended <strong>of</strong> Lauder <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, the above arms being conform<br />
to those <strong>of</strong> his progenitors, cut upon grave-stones <strong>of</strong> old dates, which are<br />
preserved by the said Sir John, who is lineally descended <strong>of</strong> Andrew Lauder, a son <strong>of</strong><br />
Robert Lauder <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, or Lauder-Tower, and his wife, Elizabeth Ballenden,<br />
daughter to Ballenden <strong>of</strong> Lasswade, by whom he had three sons the two eldest<br />
;<br />
were cut <strong>of</strong>f, with many <strong>of</strong> their relations, in a plea, by the Homes and Cranstone,<br />
in the minority <strong>of</strong> King James VI. but the youngest surviving son, Andrew, re-<br />
tired to his mother's friends. He married Janet, daughter <strong>of</strong> David Ramsay <strong>of</strong><br />
Pol ton, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Dalhousie ; <strong>of</strong> them was descended Sir John<br />
Lauder <strong>of</strong> Newington, Baronet, whose eldest son is the abovementioned Sir John<br />
Lander <strong>of</strong> Fountainhall.<br />
FORSYTH <strong>of</strong> that Ilk carries argent, a cheveron ingrailed gules, between three<br />
griffins rampant azure, armed, membred sable, and crowned or. Workman's Ma-<br />
nuscript.<br />
For the antiquity <strong>of</strong> the name, there is a charter in the Earl <strong>of</strong> Haddington's<br />
Collections, page 67. granted by King Robert the Bruce, Osberto filio Roberti de<br />
Forsytb, servienti nostro, <strong>of</strong> an hundred solidates terra; in tcnemcnto de Salekill, in<br />
the sheriffdom <strong>of</strong> Stirling.<br />
