between three powers haurient, sable, for Russel. W. and Font's MS.<br />

RAMSAY <strong>of</strong> Colluthie, quarterly, first and fourth Ramsay ; second and third<br />

azure, a boar's head erased between three mascles or. Font's MS.<br />

William Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Colluthie was by King David II. (says Sir James Balfour)<br />

invested with tlie earldom <strong>of</strong> Fife, by the cincture, <strong>of</strong> the belt and sword, as the<br />

custom then was, but he dying without heirs-male <strong>of</strong> his body, that earldom re-<br />

turned to the Crowii, and Colluthie to his other heirs.<br />

RAMSAY <strong>of</strong> Bahnain in the Merns carried the arms <strong>of</strong> Ramsay, with arose on the<br />

breast 01 the eagle. (H. M.) He was descended <strong>of</strong> John Ramsay that was created<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> Bothwell by King James III. who being forfeited, his successors retained<br />

Sir JOHN RAMSAY <strong>of</strong> Whitehill, Bart, descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong> Ramsay <strong>of</strong><br />

Cockpen, a second son <strong>of</strong> Dalhousie, the arms <strong>of</strong> Dalhousie within a bordure sable,<br />

charged with eight roses <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, an unicorn's head erased argent, charged<br />

with a rose gules : motto, Semper victor. N. R.<br />

Sir ANDRUW RAMSAY <strong>of</strong> Waughton, Bart, eldest lawful son <strong>of</strong> Sir Andrew Ramsay<br />

<strong>of</strong> Abbotshall, sometime one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice, and <strong>of</strong><br />

his Majesty's Privy Council, and <strong>of</strong>ten Provost <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, quarterly, first ani?<br />

fourth argent, an eagle displayed sable and a chief , gules, for Ramsay ; second and<br />

third grand quarter quartered, first and fourth gules, on a cheveron argent, arose<br />

between two lions rampant <strong>of</strong> the field ; second and third argent, three martlets,<br />

i and i gules, the arms <strong>of</strong> Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Wauchton, whose heiress he married ;<br />

crest, an eagle displayed as the former : motto, Probando i approbando. L. R.<br />

GEORGE RAMSAY <strong>of</strong> Edington, vfhose father was a son <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Dalhousie,<br />

carries Rams'ay within a bordure gules, and Dalhousie's crest charged with a crescent<br />

with ; the motto, Dum varior. Idem. L. R.<br />

Mr HUGH RAMSAY, Provost <strong>of</strong> Methven, carries Ramsay within an ode <strong>of</strong> eight<br />

martlets azure ; crest, a star <strong>of</strong> six rays issuing out <strong>of</strong> a crescent : argent motto,<br />

CHARLES ALOISIUS RAMSAY, by origin a Scot, living in France, son to Peter<br />

Daniel Ramsay, and Sarah Nisbet his spouse ; (and which Daniel was eldest lawful<br />

son, procreate between John Ramsay, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Banff, and<br />

Katharine Morison,) carries Ramsay, the eagle charged on the breast with a this-<br />

tle ; crest, an eagle rising regardant sable, armed and mcmbred or: motto, Migro<br />

BICK.ERTON <strong>of</strong> that Ilk carries argent, an eagle displayed gules, beaked and membred<br />

sable. Workman's MS.<br />

Sir WALTER BICKERTON <strong>of</strong> Luffness carried the same ; he died in the reign <strong>of</strong><br />

King David the Bruce, and left behind him three daughters. John Gourlay married<br />

one <strong>of</strong> them, and got with her the lands <strong>of</strong> Kincraig in Fife.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the GOURLAYS carry or, an eagle with wings displayed sable, surmounted<br />

with a bend <strong>of</strong> the second, charged with crescents gules. (Mackenzie's Herald-<br />

ry and Font's MS.) Others <strong>of</strong> the name carry argent, three martlets sable.<br />

As for the antiquity <strong>of</strong> the name, Edmond Howes in his History <strong>of</strong> England,<br />

p. 153, says, the first <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Gourlay came to Scotland with William the<br />

Lion after his captivity. I find one Ingelramus de Gourlay mentioned in that<br />

King's charter, in a Retour <strong>of</strong> the Chancellory, and narrated in a charter <strong>of</strong> King<br />

Robert I. where mention is made <strong>of</strong> William de Gourlay'; and the same King gives<br />

a charter to John de Lindsay <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Rutherford and Maxton, which be-<br />

longed to Eda Gourlay. Haddington's Collections.<br />

Sir THOMAS GOURLAY <strong>of</strong> Kincraig, sable, an eagle displayed argent, armed and<br />

beaked gules ; and, for crest, such another eagle issuing out <strong>of</strong> the torce : motto,<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>unda cernit. N. R.<br />

PANTHER, sometime <strong>of</strong> Pitmedden, or, an eagle displayed sable. Mackenzie's<br />

<strong>Heraldry</strong>. Others <strong>of</strong> the name, as PANTHER <strong>of</strong> Newmains, carry argent on a fesse<br />
