OF FOWLS AND BIRDS.<br />
The achievement <strong>of</strong> this noble family is or, an eagle displayed azure, beaked,<br />
membred, and armed gules; supporters, two greyhounds, proper, collared gules:.<br />
crest, a hand holding a thunderbolt winged or ; with the motto, Dread God.<br />
The next honourable branch <strong>of</strong> that family is that <strong>of</strong> NORTHESK. ; the first <strong>of</strong><br />
which was Sir John Carnegie, brother to David, first Earl <strong>of</strong> Southesk, who was<br />
created Earl <strong>of</strong> ETHIE the first <strong>of</strong> November 1647, by King Charles I. whose blazon<br />
was then, which I have seen, illuminated thus : or, an eagle displayed azure,<br />
beaked, armed, and membred sable, within a bordure gules, supported by two<br />
leopards, and a demi-one for crest ; with the motto, Tache sans tacbe. He married<br />
a daughter <strong>of</strong> Hahburton <strong>of</strong> Pitcur. His son and successor Earl David, not<br />
fancying his father's titles <strong>of</strong> honour, got new ones from King Charles II. anno<br />
1662, to be stiled Lord ROSEHILL and Earl <strong>of</strong> NORTHESK. He also altered his arms<br />
thus, quarterly, first and fourth Carnegie ; second and third urgent, a pale gules,<br />
for the title <strong>of</strong> Northesk, as I suppose ; supporters, crest and motto, as before.<br />
He married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Patrick Earl <strong>of</strong> Panmure, by whom he had four sons and<br />
one daughter ; the eldest son and successor David, father <strong>of</strong> David the present<br />
Earl <strong>of</strong> Northesk.<br />
ALEXANDER CARNEGIE <strong>of</strong> Kinfauns, a second son <strong>of</strong> David Earl <strong>of</strong> Northesk,<br />
carries quarterly, first and fourth quarters quartered, being the same with North-<br />
esk ; and, for difference, within a bordure <strong>of</strong> Panmure, viz. parted per pale gules<br />
and argent, charged with eight escalops counter-changed <strong>of</strong> the same ; second and<br />
third quarters, parted per fesse, argent and sable, on a cheveron counter-changed,<br />
between three torteauxes, two in chief gules, and one in base <strong>of</strong> the first, a flowerde-luce<br />
<strong>of</strong> the third, for having married Mrs Anne Blair, eldest daughter and heir<br />
to Sir William Blair <strong>of</strong> Kinfauns, Bart, supported on the right by a leopard spotted,<br />
proper, collared argent, charged with three torteauxes gules, and on the left<br />
by a greyhound, proper, collared gules, charged with escalops argent ; crest, a leo-<br />
pard from the shoulders, with a collar argent, charged with torteauxes and escalops<br />

Sir DAVID CARNEGIE <strong>of</strong> Pittarrow, Bart, descended <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander Carnegie,<br />
fourth son <strong>of</strong> David, first Earl <strong>of</strong> Southesk, and his lady a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir David<br />
Lindsay <strong>of</strong> Edzel, bears parted per pale, or and argent, an eagle displayed azure,<br />
armed and beaked gules ; crest, a demi-eagle displayed <strong>of</strong> the same : motto, Vidc'j<br />
aha sequarque.<br />
JAMES CARNEGIE <strong>of</strong> Craigo, descended <strong>of</strong> Carnegie <strong>of</strong> Cookston, bears or, an<br />
eagle displayed azure, armed and membred gules, surmounted on the breast with a<br />
cup <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a star proper. : motto, Alls .ispicit astra.<br />
ROBERT CARNEGIE <strong>of</strong> Newgate, or, an eagle displayed azure, and, in chief, a<br />
buckle between two annulets <strong>of</strong> the second ; crest, two dexter hands gauntleu,<br />
issuing out <strong>of</strong> a cloud, conjoined and supporting a ilaming heart, proper : motto,<br />

WILLIAM CARNEGIE, eldest son to Robert Carnegie <strong>of</strong> Leuclands, or, an eagle<br />
displayed azure, holding in his dexter talon a rose slipped in pale, proper. Ibid.<br />
The surname <strong>of</strong> RAMSAY carries an eagle displayed sable, in a field argent, upon<br />
account, as some say, that they are originally from Germany. As for the antiquity<br />
<strong>of</strong> the name, Slmundus de Ramsay is a witness in a charter <strong>of</strong> one Thurstain, in<br />
the reign <strong>of</strong> King David I. and William de Ramsay is frequently to be found in the<br />
charters <strong>of</strong> King William the Lion. Dalrymple's Collect, p. 421.<br />
The principal family <strong>of</strong> the name is that <strong>of</strong> DALHOUSIE, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh,<br />
<strong>of</strong> which were the valiant Sir Alexander Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Dalhousic, and Sir William<br />
Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Dalhousie, both eminent patriots for their country in the time <strong>of</strong> King<br />
Robert and King David Bruces.<br />
Archibald Earl <strong>of</strong> Douglas, Lord <strong>of</strong> Galloway and Annandale, grants a charter<br />
in the year 1414, dilecto familiari nostro Micbaeli de Ramsey; amongst the wit-<br />
nesses is Gilbertus de Ramsey de Dalbmssie, from whom was descended Sir George<br />
Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Dalhousie, who was created a Lord <strong>of</strong> Parliament by King James VI.<br />
anno 1618, and his son William Lord Ramsay was created Earl <strong>of</strong> Dalhousie by<br />
King Charles I. the igth <strong>of</strong> June 1633, <strong>of</strong> whom is descended the present William<br />
Earl <strong>of</strong> Dalhousie, who carries argent, an eagle displayed sable, beaked and<br />
membred gules, supported with two griffins with wings displayed, proper ; crest,
