ALEXANDER CLKLANU <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, eminent for his loyalty in behalf <strong>of</strong> Queen<br />

Mary. He married Margaret, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Hags, by whom he had<br />

William his sou and successor, who married the sister <strong>of</strong> Walter Stewart, the first<br />

Lord Blantyre ; their eldest son, Alexander, married the sister <strong>of</strong> John Hamilton,<br />

first Lord Bargeny. Their son and heir sold the lands <strong>of</strong> Cleland to K cousin <strong>of</strong><br />

his own name. Major William Cleland, one <strong>of</strong> the Commissioners <strong>of</strong> the Customs<br />

in Scotland, great-grandson <strong>of</strong> the lust-mentioned Alexander Cleland <strong>of</strong> that Ilk,<br />

carries the principal arms <strong>of</strong> the family, as u tessera <strong>of</strong> his blood and primogeniture,<br />

viz. azure, a hare salient argent, with a hunting-horn vert, hanging about<br />

its neck, garnished gules ; crest, a falcon standing upon a left-hand glove, proper:<br />

motto, Nonsibi; at other times, t'ur spoil, supported by two greyhounds, as in<br />

the Lyon Register and Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

CLELAND <strong>of</strong> Faskine curries as above, with the addition <strong>of</strong> a chief argent, char-<br />

ged with a sword fesse-ways azure, hiked and pommelled or. Lyon Register.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> STRODE in England carries argent, three conies sable, 2 and i.<br />

The otter lives both in land and water, and is frequently carried issuing out <strong>of</strong><br />

fesses or bars waved, which represent rivers as before observed ; and this creature<br />

by some heralds is said to represent a shifty warrior.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> MELDRUM carries argent, a demi-otter issuing out <strong>of</strong> a bar waved<br />

sable <strong>of</strong> which ; before, quartered with Seaton <strong>of</strong> Meldrum. For which see.<br />

We meet with severals <strong>of</strong> this name in the charters <strong>of</strong> King William. Alexander<br />

de i. Melgedrum, e. Meldrum, is witness in the resignation <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong><br />

William Lord Mel-<br />

'Beethwald, by John de Strathern, 1278 ; and, in anno 1299,<br />

drum is one <strong>of</strong> those employed to treat about King David's redemption. (Abercromby's<br />

Hist. Vol. II. p. 115.) Willielmus Dominus de Meldrum is mentioned in<br />

a replagiation at the instance <strong>of</strong> the abbot <strong>of</strong> Aberbrothick ; and another, Archibald<br />

Meldrum de C/oss, is one <strong>of</strong> the assizers in the perambulation between Easter<br />

and Wester-Kinghoras, in the year 1547. For which see Haddington's Collec-<br />

tions.<br />

Mr GEORGE MELDRUM <strong>of</strong> Crombie carries quarterly, first and fourth argent, a<br />

demi-otter issuing out <strong>of</strong> a bar waved sable, for Meldrum ; second and third<br />

argent, three unicorns' heads couped sable, for Preston ; all within a bordure <strong>of</strong><br />

the last ; crest, a dexter-hand holding a book : motto, Metis imrnota manet. New<br />

Register.<br />

LITHGOW <strong>of</strong> Drygrange in Teviotdale carries argent, a demi-otter sable, issuing<br />

out <strong>of</strong> a loch in base, proper.<br />

WILLIAM LITHGOW, son and heir to David Lithgow <strong>of</strong> Drygrange, gets a new<br />

charter from the abbot and convent <strong>of</strong> Melrose, <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Drygrange, for<br />

and robbers<br />

his special service in resisting, to the hazard <strong>of</strong> his life, depredators<br />

<strong>of</strong> the dominion <strong>of</strong> Melrose, as the charter bears, (which 1 have seen in the custody<br />

<strong>of</strong> Drygrange) <strong>of</strong> the date 1 8th <strong>of</strong> January 1539; which charter is confirmed by<br />

King James V. the same year ;. and from which William is lineally descended the<br />

present Lithgow <strong>of</strong> Drygrange.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> OTTKRKUKN carry otters' heads, relative to the name. I have met<br />

with one Allan Otterburn, Secretary to Murdoch Duke <strong>of</strong> Albany, so designed<br />

in a<br />

charter <strong>of</strong> that Duke's. And in a charter <strong>of</strong> King James II. Nicolas Otterburn<br />

is designed, Clericus Rotuhntm Regni nostri.<br />

OTTERBURN <strong>of</strong> Redhall, argent, goutte de sable,<br />

a cheveron between three otters'<br />

heads couped <strong>of</strong> the last, and, on a chief azure, a crescent or. Font's MS.<br />

FULLARTON <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Ayr, carries argent, three otters' heads<br />

erased gules ; crest, a camel's head, with the motto, Lux in tenebris. Supporters,<br />

two savages wreathed about the head and middle with laurel, all proper, holding<br />

in their hands branches <strong>of</strong> laurel.<br />

This is a family <strong>of</strong> an old standing, as by several ancient charters which I have<br />

seen. Sir Adam Fullarton <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, son <strong>of</strong> Reginald Fullarton <strong>of</strong> the same,<br />

obtains a new charter <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Fullarton and others, from James, High'.
