first Lord Forbes, and his lady, a daughter <strong>of</strong> William Earl Marischal, carried<br />

azure, a cross couped or; (Pont makes the cross a patee one, fitched) bet-ween<br />

three bears' heads couped argent, muzzled gules ; and for crest, a wreath or crown<br />

<strong>of</strong> thorns ; with the motto, Hosts coronat spina. N. R.<br />

Sir JOHN FORBES <strong>of</strong> Monymusk, Bart, descended <strong>of</strong> the Forbesses <strong>of</strong> Carsindae,<br />

carries azure, on a cheveron between three bears' heads coupea argent, muzzled<br />

gules, a man's heart, proper, with wings or : motto, Spe expecto. New Register.<br />

Sir ALEXANDER FORBES <strong>of</strong> Tolquhon carries, quarterly, first and fourth Forbes,<br />

second and third argent, three unicorns' heads erased sable, for marrying Mar-<br />

jory, the heiress <strong>of</strong> Sir Henry Preston <strong>of</strong> Formartin ; supported by two greyhounds,<br />

proper, collared gules ; crest, a stag's head attired with ten tynes, proper :<br />

Sir JOHN FORBES <strong>of</strong> Waterton bears, quarterly, as Tolquhon, and, by way <strong>of</strong><br />

Constable <strong>of</strong> Aberdeen, by succeeding to the lands <strong>of</strong> Cairnmuch, and in which<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice he was established by Act <strong>of</strong> Parliament ; crest, an eagle displayed sable :<br />

right by an unicorn or, powdered with ermine spots sable, and on the sinister by<br />
