In the reign <strong>of</strong> Alexander the III. IValdenus de Coveran, or Cochran, was a witness<br />

to the charter which Dungallus, Jilius Svvayn gave to Walter Stewart Earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Monteith, <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Skipness in Argyleshire, in the year 1262, (Dalrymple's<br />

Collections and Crawfurd's History <strong>of</strong> Renfrew) William dc C'jf'.n-an is mentioned<br />

by Prynne, in his History, as one <strong>of</strong> the Scots barons that gave allegiance to King<br />

Edward the I. <strong>of</strong> England. In the reign <strong>of</strong> David the 11. flourished G'jsilin-<br />

Cochran, father <strong>of</strong> William de Cochrun <strong>of</strong> that Ilk; and from him (as<br />

in Mr Crawfurd's<br />

Peerage) was lineally descended William Cochran <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, who obtaint-d<br />

a charter <strong>of</strong> confirmation from Queen Mary <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Cochran, in the year<br />

1576. He had with his wife, Margaret, daughter <strong>of</strong> Robert Montgomery <strong>of</strong> Skelmorly,<br />

only a daughter, Eli/.abeth Cochran, his sole heir, to whom he entailed his<br />

whole estate, and to the heirs <strong>of</strong> her body ; and, for want <strong>of</strong> issue, to several others,<br />

upon condition they should bear the name and arms <strong>of</strong> the family<br />

beth took to husband Alexander Blair, a younger son <strong>of</strong> John Blair <strong>of</strong> that Ilk,<br />

and to him she bore seven sons and two daughters : The eldest, Sir John, died,<br />

having no issue with his lady, Madam Buttler, one <strong>of</strong> the daughters <strong>of</strong> Ormond.<br />

To him succeeded his brother, Sir William Cochran <strong>of</strong> Cowden, who, for his singular<br />

parts and loyalty to King Charles the I. was advanced to the dignity <strong>of</strong> a Lord <strong>of</strong><br />

Parliament, by the title <strong>of</strong> Lord Cochran <strong>of</strong> Cowden, in the year 1647 ; and, upon<br />

the Restoration <strong>of</strong> King Charles the II. as an additional mark <strong>of</strong> his Majesty's<br />

esteem <strong>of</strong> his good services, he was advanced to the dignity <strong>of</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> DUNUONAI.D,<br />

1669, and was one <strong>of</strong> the Commissioners <strong>of</strong> his Majesty's Treasury. He had to<br />

his lady Euphame, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir William Scot <strong>of</strong> Ardross ; she had to him two<br />

sons and a daughter, William. Lord Cochran and Sir John <strong>of</strong> Ochiltree.<br />

Which William Lord Cochran died in his father's lifetime, leaving issue by the<br />

Lady Katharine his wife, daughter <strong>of</strong> John Earl <strong>of</strong> Cassilis, his- John, successor,<br />

William Cochran <strong>of</strong> Kilmarnock, and Alexander Cochran <strong>of</strong> Bonshaw. John succeeded<br />

his grandfather in the earldom <strong>of</strong> Dundonald ; he married Lady Susanna,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> William Duke <strong>of</strong> Hamilton, and by her he had two sons, William Earl<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dundonald, who died without issue, and was succeeded by his brother John,<br />

the present Earl <strong>of</strong> Dundonald, who married Anne, daughter <strong>of</strong> Charles Earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Dunmore, by whom he has William Lord Cochran, and three daughters ; he carries<br />

the above achievement.<br />

The arms <strong>of</strong> the surname <strong>of</strong> Cochran, which I find matriculated in the New<br />

Register,<br />

are these :<br />

Sir JOHN COCHRAN <strong>of</strong> Ochiltree, a son <strong>of</strong> the first Earl <strong>of</strong> Dundonald, argent, a<br />

cheveron gules, between three boars' heads erased azure, within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the<br />

seond ; crest a horse passant argent: motto, Virtute \3 labore.<br />

JOHN COCHRAN <strong>of</strong> Waterside, a younger son <strong>of</strong> Ochiltree, carries as his father,<br />

with a crescent in chief for difference.<br />

ALEXANDER COCHRAN <strong>of</strong> Balbarchan, argent, a boar's head erased, and, in chief,<br />

three mullets disposed cheveron-ways azure ; crest, a spear-head and garb crossing<br />

other saltier-ways, proper : motto, Arms y industria*<br />

Mr WILLIAM COCHRAN <strong>of</strong> Rochsoles, descended <strong>of</strong> a second brother <strong>of</strong> Balbar-<br />

chan, argent, a boar's head erased, and, in chief, a crescent betwixt two mullets<br />

disposed cheveron-ways azure.<br />

Mr WALTER COCHRAN <strong>of</strong> Drumbreck, ermine-, on a chief gules,<br />

erased or, betwixt two mullets argent ; crest, a stag standing at a<br />

a stag's head<br />

gaze, proper,<br />

attired : gules motto, Vigilanti salus.<br />

WILLIAM COCHRAN, second son to Walter Cochran <strong>of</strong> Drumbreck, sometime<br />

Bailie <strong>of</strong> Aberdeen, the same with his father, within a bordure gules; crest, a hand<br />

holding a man's heart, proper : motto, Concordia vincit.<br />

COCHRAN <strong>of</strong> Pitfarr, ermine, on a chief gules, a boar's head erased betwixt two<br />

mullets argent. Font's MS.<br />

ROLLO <strong>of</strong> Duncrub, argent, a cheveron azure, between three boars' heads erased<br />

sable. Other books give them azure, as now carried. As for the antiquity <strong>of</strong> the<br />

family, John Rollo got a grant <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Duncrub, and other lands, from<br />

David Earl <strong>of</strong> Strathern, with the consent <strong>of</strong> King Robert his father, <strong>of</strong> the date<br />

1 3th February 1380. From the lands <strong>of</strong> Duncrub the family was designed; and<br />

these lands, with others, were erected into a free barony bv King James IV. in,<br />
