The most eminent, families <strong>of</strong> the name, now standing, are Nisbet <strong>of</strong> Dean,<br />

Nisbct <strong>of</strong> Graigintinnic, and Nisbet <strong>of</strong> Dirleton, being all come <strong>of</strong> three sons <strong>of</strong><br />

i one Hary Nisbet, merchant in Edinburgh, descended from Nisbet <strong>of</strong> that Ilk.<br />

piv-.-.cnt Sir JuiiN JNisinn- <strong>of</strong> Dean, Baronet, lineally descended <strong>of</strong> the eldest<br />

son Jame.-., carries argent, a cheveron gulfs, between three boars' heads erased sable;<br />

crest, a boar's head nib it : motto, / byde it. The family lias been in use to carry<br />

their arms supported on the right side bv a savage wreathed about the head and<br />

middle, all proprr, holding a button on his shoulder, and, on the left, by a greyhound,<br />

West-churcn, ana in Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

ALEXA:-. <strong>of</strong> Craigintinnie, descended <strong>of</strong> the second son William,<br />

carried the Dean, but charged the cheveron with three cinquefoils argent.<br />

Sir |oir. Dirleton, a famous Lawyer, was one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Ji^tice, and Advocate to his Majesty King Charles II. from the year<br />

1663 to tli-j year 1677 : iii-. father was Sir Patrick Nisbet, also one <strong>of</strong> the Lords<br />

<strong>of</strong> Session, stiled Lord Eastbank, descended <strong>of</strong> the third son. Dirleton carried<br />

argent on a cheveron gules, betwixt three boars' heads erased sable, as many<br />

cinquefoils <strong>of</strong> the first ; the cheveron ensigned on the top with a thistle, proper ;<br />

crest, a hand holding a pair <strong>of</strong> balances; with the motto, Discite -jitstitiam ; which<br />

arms are now carried by William Nisbet <strong>of</strong> Dirleton, eldest son <strong>of</strong> the abovementioned<br />

Alexander Nisbet <strong>of</strong> Craigintinnie, as heir <strong>of</strong> tailzie to Sir John Nisbet.<br />

NISBET <strong>of</strong> Greenholm, a family <strong>of</strong> a good old standing in the shire <strong>of</strong> Ayr, descended<br />

<strong>of</strong> Nisbet <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, carries argent, three boars' heads erased within a<br />

bordure sable ; crest, a boar's head as the former ; with this motto, His fortihus<br />

and Mr<br />

arma, as in Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements. Of this family is NISLET <strong>of</strong> Carphin,<br />

ALEXANDER. NISBET, Chirurgeon in Edinburgh, who carries argent, three boars' heads<br />

erased sable, within a bordure invected g ule s, for his difference; crest and motto,<br />

as Greenholm. Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

The other principal and ancient family in Berwickshire, is SWINTON <strong>of</strong> that Ilk,<br />

who carries sable, a cheveron or between three boars' heads erased argent ; crest,<br />

a b.nir dunned to a tree : motto, y'espere.<br />

The curious Mr James Anderson, in his Elaborate Historical Essay <strong>of</strong> the Independency<br />

ot the Crown' <strong>of</strong> Scotland, page $4. tells us, that, amongst the many<br />

charters <strong>of</strong> Scots families that he did see in the chartulary <strong>of</strong> Durham, there were<br />

two original charters granted by King David, commonly called St David, to the<br />

predecessor <strong>of</strong> Swinton, wherein he is termed Miles, and was to hold his lands as<br />

freely as any <strong>of</strong> the king's barons. 1 have shown, a little before, that Alanus de<br />

S-cj'tntun is a witness with IVi 1 Helmut dc Nesbytb, in a charter <strong>of</strong> Patricias Comes, in<br />

the reign <strong>of</strong> King William the Lion : Of this family were many brave men, mentioned<br />

by ou.- Historians. The family is now* represented by Sir John Swinton <strong>of</strong><br />

that Ilk, Jiamiut, who <strong>of</strong> late has added to his arms, for supporters, swo swine, as<br />

relative to the name, standing on a compartment, whereon are these words, ye<br />

pense,<br />

as in Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

Though this was a considerable and honourable family, who have had intermarriages<br />

with very eminent families in the kingdom, they have few or no cadets<br />

whose arms I meet with in our records, save these <strong>of</strong> Robert Swinton, designed, in<br />

our New Registers, late Factor to the Marquis <strong>of</strong> Montrose, who carries sable, a<br />

. cheveron or between three boar.-,' heads erased argent, within a bordure indented<br />

<strong>of</strong> the second ; crest, an ear <strong>of</strong> : wheat, proper motto, Dum sedulo prospere.<br />

RED PATH <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, another ancient family in the Merse, argent,<br />

Balfour's and<br />

ingrailed between three boars' heads erased gules ; as in Sir Font's MSS. This family is now extinct.<br />

REDPATH <strong>of</strong> is Angelraw the only family <strong>of</strong> th'e<br />

the foresaid arms.<br />

DI'NSE <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, another ancient family there, sable, a cheveron or betwixt<br />

three boars' heads <strong>of</strong> the last, as in Mr Thomas Crawfurd's MS. Of which family<br />

.is the famous Joannes Duns Scotus.<br />

HAITLIE <strong>of</strong> Mellerstain, another old family in the Merse, now extinct, carried or
