ROGER GORDON <strong>of</strong> Troquhan, descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong> Sir John Gordon <strong>of</strong><br />

Stitchel, after designed <strong>of</strong> Lochinvar, and his lady, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Dougal Mm -<br />

lellan <strong>of</strong> Troquhan, from whom they had the lands <strong>of</strong> Troquhan, azure, a bend,<br />

betwixt three boar's heads couped or, all within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the same; crest, a<br />

savage-head erased, proper : motto, Fear God. Lyon Register.<br />

GORDON <strong>of</strong> Earlston, another branch <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Lochinvar ; the old seal ol<br />

arms which I have- seen <strong>of</strong> this family had only three boars' heads, with their neck<br />

pendent and erased, as in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements, and the legend round the<br />

shield, Sigillum baronis baronite de Earlstoun; but since the year 1661, the arms <strong>of</strong><br />

the family are matriculated in the Lyon Register, azure, a besant or, betwixt three<br />

boars' heads erased <strong>of</strong> the second ; and, for crest, a dexter hand issuing out <strong>of</strong> a<br />

wreath, grasping a shabble, proper : motto, Dread God. This family was first de-<br />

signed <strong>of</strong> Airds ; Alexander Gordon <strong>of</strong> Airds married Margaret, eldest daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> John Sinclair <strong>of</strong> Earlston, and his wife Janet, daughter to George Gordon <strong>of</strong><br />

Troquhan ; by which marriage his issue got the lands <strong>of</strong> Earlston, which the Sinclairs<br />

<strong>of</strong> Earlston, descended <strong>of</strong> a younger son <strong>of</strong> Sir John Sinclair <strong>of</strong> Herdmanston,<br />

purchased from Patrick Hepburn Lord Hailes, about the year 1472, as appears by<br />

the evidents in the hands <strong>of</strong> the present Earlston.<br />

John succeeded his father Alexander; he married Elizabeth, heiress <strong>of</strong> John<br />

Gordon <strong>of</strong> Black, whose son was John, and he again was succeeded by his son<br />

Alexander Gordon <strong>of</strong> Earlston, who was a Member <strong>of</strong> Parliament for the Stewar-<br />

try <strong>of</strong> Kirkcudbright ; he died in the year 1643, leaving issue, by his wife Eliza-<br />

beth, daughter to John Gordon <strong>of</strong> Muirfad after Viscount <strong>of</strong> Kenmure. His<br />

eldest sfta and successor, William Gordon <strong>of</strong> Earlston, married Mary, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Sir John Hope <strong>of</strong> Craighall, Lord <strong>of</strong> Session, and his lady, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir<br />

Archibald Murray <strong>of</strong> Blackbarony. He died in the year 1679, leaving behind<br />

him several children, Alexander, his eldest son who succeeded, and his second son<br />

Sir William Gordon <strong>of</strong> Afton, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the army, who was made a<br />

Knight Baronet, by letters patent, <strong>of</strong> the date ipth <strong>of</strong> July 1706 ; which dignity<br />

was to pass to the heirs-male <strong>of</strong> his own body ; and which failing, to Alexander Gordon<br />

<strong>of</strong> Earlston, his elder brother ; he married Mary, the eldest <strong>of</strong> the daughters<br />

und co-heirs <strong>of</strong> Sir George Campbell <strong>of</strong> Cessnock ; but dying without i^sue in the<br />

year 1719, the dignity <strong>of</strong> Baronet came to his brother, Sir Alexander, and his heirs,<br />

as by the patent abovementioned; which Sir Alexander Gordon, now <strong>of</strong> Earlston,<br />

in the year 1676, married, first, Janet, daughter to Sir Thomas Hamilton, and<br />

his lady, Ann, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Sir John Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Preston, with whom he;<br />

had four sons and two daughters ; and secondly, he married Marion, second<br />

daughter to Alexander Gordon Viscount <strong>of</strong> Kenmure, by whom he has also issue.<br />

Thomas, the eldest son <strong>of</strong> the first marriage, and apparent heir <strong>of</strong> Earlston, marvied<br />

Ann Boick, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> William Boick, Merchant in Edinburgh, with<br />

whom he has issue.<br />

NATHANIEL GORDON <strong>of</strong> Carleton, son <strong>of</strong> David Gordon, a younger son <strong>of</strong> John<br />

Gordon <strong>of</strong> Earlston, carries the abovementioned arms <strong>of</strong> Earlston with a suitable<br />

difference.<br />

WILLIAM GORDON <strong>of</strong> Sherm, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Lochinvar, azure, a<br />

bend betwixt three boars' heads erased, or ; crest, a demi-savage holding in his<br />

right hand a batton erect on his shoulder, and in his left, an ear <strong>of</strong> wheat, proper:<br />

motto, Tarn pace quam praelio. Ibid.<br />

WILLIAM GORDON <strong>of</strong> Dengeuch, descended <strong>of</strong> Lochinvar, azure, a bend ingrailed<br />

betwixt three boars' heads erased or; crest, an hand holding a batton erect, proper<br />

: motto, Maneo nan fugio. Ibid.<br />

JOHN GORDON <strong>of</strong> Cardiness, decended <strong>of</strong> Gordon <strong>of</strong> Lochinvar, azure, a bend<br />

betwixt three boars' heads couped or ; his only daughter and heir, Elizabeth Gor-<br />

don, was married to Mr William Stewart, third son to James Earl <strong>of</strong> Galloway,<br />

and his lady Nicolas Grierson, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Lag ; with his wife he got the estate<br />

<strong>of</strong> Castle-Stewart, being grand-daughter to Colonel William Stewart <strong>of</strong> Castle-<br />

Srev.art, another branch <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Galloway, and with her he had a son<br />

and daughter ; the son William married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir William Maxwell <strong>of</strong><br />

Monreith ; the daughter, Nicolas Stewart, married Colonel William Maxwell <strong>of</strong><br />

Cardiness. Mr William Stewart <strong>of</strong> Castle-Stewarr, as a son. <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Gal-
