ot whom before : And for his third wife, he had Margaret, daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> William Loid Crichton, Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Scotland, and by her had George his<br />
successor. He, for his special service performed to King James II. in his minority,<br />
was, by that king, in the year 1449, created Karl <strong>of</strong> Huntly ; and for the notable<br />
defeat this carl gave to my Lord Crawford, then in rebellion at Brechin, on the<br />
<strong>of</strong> Inver-<br />

ness, with divers other manors and lordships, as that <strong>of</strong> Badenoch, for which the<br />

George succeeded his father, and was second Earl <strong>of</strong> Huntly : He<br />
surname <strong>of</strong> Gordon, and placed the arms <strong>of</strong> that name in the first quarter, and<br />
those <strong>of</strong> Seaton in the third quarter; as by the following blazon :<br />
GEORGE, the sixth Earl <strong>of</strong> HUNTLY, in a lineal descent, was, by<br />
the favour <strong>of</strong><br />
King James VI. advanced to the dignity <strong>of</strong> Marquis <strong>of</strong> Huntly ; and his greatgnuidson,<br />
George Marquis <strong>of</strong> Huntly, was, by King Charles II. honoured with the<br />
dignity and title <strong>of</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> GORDON, the ist <strong>of</strong> November 1684, and was, by King<br />
James VII. made one <strong>of</strong> the Knights <strong>of</strong> the most ancient Order <strong>of</strong> the Thistle.<br />
He married Elizabeth Howard, daughter <strong>of</strong> Henry Duke <strong>of</strong> Norfolk, by whom he<br />
had Alexander the present Duke <strong>of</strong> Gordon. The achievement <strong>of</strong> the family is,<br />
quarterly, first Gordon, azure, three boars' heads couped or; second or, three lions'<br />
heads erased gules, langued azure, as Lord <strong>of</strong> Badenoch ; third the paternal coat <strong>of</strong><br />
Seaton, as descended <strong>of</strong> the family ; fourth azure, three cinquefoils argent, for<br />
Fraser : Which arms, in the late duke's time, were surrounded with the collar <strong>of</strong><br />
the most ancient Order <strong>of</strong> the Thistle, timbred with crown, helmet, and valets,<br />
suitable to his Grace's quality ; crest, a buck's head couped, proper, attired or:<br />
motto, Bydand ; supporters, two deer-hounds, proper, collared gules, and charged<br />
with three buckles or.<br />
The honourable branches <strong>of</strong> this family are GORDON Earl <strong>of</strong> ABOYNE. The first -<br />
<strong>of</strong> this House was Charles Gordon, a younger son <strong>of</strong> George, second Marquis <strong>of</strong><br />
Huntly, by his ludy, Anne Campbell, daughter <strong>of</strong> Archibald Earl <strong>of</strong> Argyle ; who,<br />
for his loyalty, was, by King Charles II. dignified with the title <strong>of</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Aboyne,<br />
loth <strong>of</strong> September 1661. He died 1680, leaving issue, by Elizabeth, his wife,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> John Earl <strong>of</strong> Strathmore, Charles, his successor ; who married Elizabeth,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> Patrick Earl <strong>of</strong> Strathmore, his cousin-german : And their son<br />
is the present Charles Earl <strong>of</strong> Aboyne, whose achievement is, azure, a cheveron<br />
between three boars' heads couped, within a double tressure, flowered with flowerde-luces<br />
within, and adorned with crescents without or, for Seaton ; crest, a demi-<br />
lion rampant azure; supporters, two men armed at all parts, holding each a hal-<br />
bert in his hand, proper: motto, Slant catera tigno.<br />
The Right Honourable GEORGE GORDON Earl <strong>of</strong> ABERDEEN, Viscount <strong>of</strong> FOR-<br />
TIN, Lord HADDO, &-c. descended <strong>of</strong> Gordon, an ancient family <strong>of</strong> that name<br />
in Aberdeenshire. He was digriified with the above titles <strong>of</strong> honour, 3oth <strong>of</strong> November<br />
1682 ; his arn.s,v/2///r, three boars' heads couped, within a double tressure,<br />
flowered and counter-flowered with thistles, roses, and flower-de-luces or; crest,<br />
two arms -from the shoulder naked, holding a bow, proper, to let an arrow fly:<br />
motto. Fortmi a scqimtur; supported on the dexter by a man representing one <strong>of</strong><br />
the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College '<strong>of</strong> Justice in robes, proper, and, on the sinister, by a<br />
Minister <strong>of</strong> State, in his robes also. He was President <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice,<br />
and thereafter High Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Scotland.<br />
GORDON <strong>of</strong> Abergeldie, descended <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Huntly, carried that Earl's<br />
arms, quartered with a mullet for difference, by Mr Font's Blazons ; but, by our<br />
New Register, all within a bordure quartered, argent and gules.<br />
