Kelso, Ricardus Scotus is to be found in the reign <strong>of</strong> Alexander II. ; and, in the<br />

reign <strong>of</strong> Alexander III. Michael Scott <strong>of</strong> Balwearie, and <strong>of</strong> Scots-Craig in Fife,<br />

after the death <strong>of</strong> that king, was sent Ambassador by the estates <strong>of</strong> Scotland to the<br />

King <strong>of</strong> Norway, and is aftermcntioned as one <strong>of</strong> the barons convened at Ber-<br />

wick, by Edward I. <strong>of</strong> England, in the year 1292; IVillielmus Scotus is witness in<br />

a charter <strong>of</strong> Walter II. Senetcallsu Scotia to the abbacy <strong>of</strong> Paisley ; (see Sir James<br />

Dalrymple's Historical Collections, page 412, who says) perhaps was predecessor <strong>of</strong><br />

the Scotts <strong>of</strong> Murdiston in Clydesdale, who excambed these lands for Branxholm,<br />

in the shire <strong>of</strong> Roxburgh, from whom the Scots <strong>of</strong> Buccleugh, <strong>of</strong> whom before.<br />

William Scott <strong>of</strong> Balwearie was taken prisoner at the battle <strong>of</strong> Flodden. He sold<br />

Sir JOHN SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Ancrum, Baronet, argent, three lions' heads erased, gules, being<br />

eldest lawful son to Patrick Scott <strong>of</strong> Langshaw, who was grandson to Andrew<br />

Scott <strong>of</strong> Glendoick, in the sheriffdom <strong>of</strong> Perth, descended <strong>of</strong> a younger son <strong>of</strong><br />

Scott <strong>of</strong> Balwearie, as by the records <strong>of</strong> our Lyon Office, and has the arms <strong>of</strong> Bal-<br />

\vearic ; crest, a lion's head erased gules, and the same are to be seen 40 years ago,<br />

painted or cut on stone, supported with two greyhounds, on the house <strong>of</strong> Vopjrie,<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> FARMER in England, argent, a fesse sable between three lions' heads<br />

erased gules, an ancient family in Oxfordshire. Sir William Farmer served King<br />

Charles I. in his troubles with unshaken loyalty and honour ; whose son was, Ixjrd<br />

Lempster.<br />

RICHARDSON in England, arger.t, on a chief sable, three liono' heads erased <strong>of</strong> the<br />

first, by Sir Thomas Richardson, Lord Chief Justice <strong>of</strong> the Common Pleas in Eng-<br />

land; who being married to dame Eli/.r.beth Beaumont, King Charles I. was pleased<br />

to advance her to the dignity <strong>of</strong> Baroness <strong>of</strong> Cramoml, to her and Sir Thomas's<br />

heirs-male, by letters patent, 28th <strong>of</strong> February 1628, which, I think, is the<br />
