to him several lands in<br />
speciali, quas erga eum gerimus ; by winch the king gives<br />
Perthshire. He married, first, Margaret, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir John Edmonstone <strong>of</strong><br />
that Ilk. She bore to him Alexander, his successor. Secondly, a daughter ot<br />
Schaw <strong>of</strong> Sauchie, and she bore to him George, iirst <strong>of</strong> the Humes <strong>of</strong> Argathy in<br />
Stirlingshire.<br />
Alexander Hume <strong>of</strong> Polwarth succeeded his father Sir Patrick. His son and<br />
successor was Patrick, who married Elizabeth, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Patrick Hepburn<br />
<strong>of</strong> Wauchton, by whom he had sons and daughters, viz. Patrick, his successor, and<br />
Sir Alexander Hume <strong>of</strong> North-Berwick, an eminent gentleman, Provost <strong>of</strong> Edin-<br />
burgh 1593.<br />
This Patrick married Agnes, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Alexander Home <strong>of</strong> Manderston, by<br />
whom he had Patrick, his successor, and Sir John <strong>of</strong> North-Berwick, from whom<br />
are descended the Humes <strong>of</strong> Castle-Home in Ireland. Which Patrick, the next<br />
laird <strong>of</strong> Polwarth, was a favourite <strong>of</strong> King James VI. and married Julian, daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas Ker <strong>of</strong> Fernihirst, sister to Andrew Lord Jedburgh, and Robert<br />
Ker Earl <strong>of</strong> Somerset, by whom he had Sir Patrick, his successor, Thomas Hume <strong>of</strong><br />
Coldstream, George Hume <strong>of</strong> Kimmerghame, Elizabeth, married to Sir John Carmichael<br />
<strong>of</strong> that Ilk, Jean, to, Christopher Cockburn <strong>of</strong> Chausly, and Sophia, to<br />
<strong>of</strong> Hilton.<br />

Sir Patrick succeeded his father, and was made a Knight-Baronet in the year<br />
1625. He married Christian, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Innerwick,<br />
by whom he had Patrick, who was created Earl <strong>of</strong> Marchmont, Viscount <strong>of</strong> Blassonberry,<br />
Lord Polwarth <strong>of</strong> Polwarth, Redbraes and Greenlaw, by letters patent,<br />
27th <strong>of</strong> April 1697. He was Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Scotland four years, and High Commissioner<br />
to the Parliament in the year 1698. He had for his lady, Grissel, daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas Ker <strong>of</strong> Cavers. She bore to him three sons and four daughters;<br />
first, Patrick Lord Polwarth, who died without issue ; second, Alexander, the present<br />
Lord Polwarth, who has issue by a 'daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir George Campbell <strong>of</strong><br />
Cessnock; third, Sir Andrew Hume <strong>of</strong> Kimmerghame, one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Justice. The eldest daughter, Grissel, was married to George Baillie<br />
<strong>of</strong> Jerviswood ; second, Anne, to Sir John Hall <strong>of</strong> Dunglas ; third, Julian, to<br />
and the fourth, Jean, to James Lord Torphichen.<br />

The Earl'<strong>of</strong> MARCHMONT'S achievement is, quarterly, first grand quarter counterquartered,<br />
Hume and Pepdie ; second argent, there piles ingrailed gules, issuing from<br />
the chief, for the surname <strong>of</strong> Polwarth ; third argent, a cross ingrailed azure, for<br />
Sinclair ; and the fourth quarter as the first ; over all, in the centre, an escutcheon<br />
argent, charged with an orange, proper, stalked and slipped vert, ensigned<br />
with an<br />
imperial crown, proper, as a coat <strong>of</strong> augmentation ; supporters, two lions regardant<br />
argent, armed and langued g ules ; crest, a hand holding a scimitar,, proper: motto,<br />
True to the end. As in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
GEORGE HUME, a younger son <strong>of</strong> Hume <strong>of</strong> Manderston, who was a younger son<br />
<strong>of</strong> David Hume <strong>of</strong> Wedderburn, and his lady, Isabel Pringle, daughter <strong>of</strong> Galashiels,<br />
for his eminent parts, was made a baron in England, by title <strong>of</strong> Lord Hume<br />
<strong>of</strong> Berwick, by King James VI. 7th July 1604; ar"l thereafter, on the 3d <strong>of</strong><br />
March 1605, Earl <strong>of</strong> DUNBAR in Scotland ; and two years after was installed a<br />
Knight Companion <strong>of</strong> the most Noble Order <strong>of</strong> the Garter. He was a long time<br />
Principal Secretary <strong>of</strong> State, and joint Commissioner with the Lord Fyvie to the<br />
Parliament <strong>of</strong> Scotland. He died at Whitehall 1618. His corpse was brought<br />
down to Scotland, and interred in the church <strong>of</strong> Dunbar, under a magnificent<br />
tomb, leaving behind him two daughters, by his wife, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Alexander<br />
Gordon <strong>of</strong> Gigh, Anne, married to Home <strong>of</strong> Cowdenknows, and the other, Eliza-<br />
beth, to the Earl <strong>of</strong> Suffolk in England. He carried, quarterly, first Home, second<br />
Pepdie, third argent, three inescutcheons vert, for Home <strong>of</strong> Broxmouth, who<br />
had married the heiress there<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Hay, and the fourth as the first :<br />
and, in surtout, the arms <strong>of</strong> Dunbar Earl <strong>of</strong> March.<br />
The male representer <strong>of</strong> this is family Alexander Hume in West-Friesland, be-<br />
ing descended from a brother <strong>of</strong> Home Earl <strong>of</strong> Dunbar.
