OF FOUR-FOOTED BEASTS.<br />
THOMAS DUNBAR, son and heir <strong>of</strong> JOHN Earl <strong>of</strong> MURRAY, carried, quarterly, first<br />
and fourth Dunbar, second and third or ; three cushions pendent by the corners,<br />
within a double tressure flowered and counter-flowered gules, for Randolph Earl<br />
<strong>of</strong> Murray.<br />
There were three or four <strong>of</strong> this family successively Earls <strong>of</strong> Murray. The last<br />
<strong>of</strong> whom, James Dunbar Earl <strong>of</strong> Murray, is said to have been affianced to a near<br />
kinswoman <strong>of</strong> his own, Isabel, daughter <strong>of</strong> Innes <strong>of</strong> that Ilk. She died, bearing<br />
to him a son Alexander, before dispensation could be obtained from the Pope, as<br />
was requisite, by reason <strong>of</strong> consanguinity betwixt them. Afterwards he married<br />
Katharine Gordon, daughter to the Earl <strong>of</strong> Huntly ; she bore to him two daughters,<br />
Marion Dunbar, the eldest, wife to James Crichton, who got with her the<br />
land^s <strong>of</strong> Frendraught ; <strong>of</strong> whom the Viscounts <strong>of</strong> Frendraught. Anne, the second<br />
daughter, was married to Archibald, a younger son <strong>of</strong> William Earl <strong>of</strong> Douglas,<br />
who was made Earl <strong>of</strong> Murray by King James II. and shortly after forfeited for<br />
his rebellion.<br />
The above-mentioned Alexander, upon the account his mother was not legally<br />
married to his father, was disappointed <strong>of</strong> the earldom, but got the lands <strong>of</strong> Westfield,<br />
and the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the sheriflfdom <strong>of</strong> Murray heritably, which continues in the<br />
family at this day. He married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sutherland <strong>of</strong> Duffus. Their son<br />
and ht;ir, James Dunbar, married Euphame, the eldest daughter and co-heir <strong>of</strong><br />
Dunbar <strong>of</strong> Cumnock, and got with her these lands, which his successors enjoyed<br />
under the designation <strong>of</strong> Barons <strong>of</strong> Cumnock, for an hundred years, till they sold<br />
it, and then the family returned to their old designation <strong>of</strong> Westfield ; <strong>of</strong> whom<br />
is descended the present James, laird <strong>of</strong> Westfield, Sheriff <strong>of</strong> Murray, whose<br />
achievement is quarterly, first and fourth gules, a lion rampant argent, within a<br />
bordure <strong>of</strong> the last, charged with eight roses <strong>of</strong> the first, for Dunbar ; second and<br />
third, or, three cushions within a double tressure, flowered and counter-flowered<br />
Cities, for Randolph ; crest, a right hand palme proper, reaching to two Earl's<br />
coronets tied together ; with the motto, Sub spe ; supporters, two lions argent,<br />
standing on a compartment, whereon are these words, Pracipitatus attarnen tutus.<br />

DUNBAR <strong>of</strong> Mochrum carries the arms <strong>of</strong> Randolph, with a mullet for his difference<br />
;<br />
as in Font's Manuscript.<br />
This family got the lands <strong>of</strong> Mochrum by marrying the second daughter and<br />
co-heir <strong>of</strong> Patrick Dunbar <strong>of</strong> Cumnock, who was probably, says Sir James Dal-<br />
rymple, a brother <strong>of</strong> Patrick Earl <strong>of</strong> March ; because, in the Register <strong>of</strong> King<br />
David II. there is a charter <strong>of</strong> George Dunbar <strong>of</strong> Cumnock, in the Sheriffdom <strong>of</strong><br />
Ayr, and <strong>of</strong> Blantyre,<br />
in the shire <strong>of</strong> Lanark. Which last-mentioned lands went<br />
with the third daughter <strong>of</strong> Patrick Dunbar <strong>of</strong> Cumnock, who married one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
name. Of whom were the Dunbars <strong>of</strong> Enterkin.<br />
GAVIN DUNBAR, Archdean <strong>of</strong> St Andrews, and Clerk Register, being thirteen<br />
years Bishop <strong>of</strong> Aberdeen, died the gth <strong>of</strong> March 1531. He was <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong><br />
Westfield, and carried the arms <strong>of</strong> the family.<br />
Mr GAVIN DUNBAR, Tutor to King James V. is said to be a brother <strong>of</strong> Mochrum.<br />
He was Archbishop <strong>of</strong> Glasgow, and Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Scotland.<br />
ALEXANDER DUNBAR, Dean <strong>of</strong> Murray, a younger son <strong>of</strong> Westfield, embracing<br />
the reformed religion, became one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice ; and<br />
was progenitor <strong>of</strong> the Dunbars <strong>of</strong> Grange, who carry, quarterly, Dunbar and<br />
Randolph, and, for his difference, all within a bordure argent, charged with eight<br />
frascs gules ; crest, a wreath <strong>of</strong> laurel proper : motto, Sub spe. As in the Lyon<br />
Register.<br />
WILLIAM DUNBAR <strong>of</strong> Hemprigs, descended <strong>of</strong> Kilbuiak, who was the eldest<br />
cadet <strong>of</strong> Westfield, Sheriff <strong>of</strong> Murray, quarterly, Dunbar and Randolph, all with-<br />
in a bordure, vair, gules and or ; crest, a lion naissant out <strong>of</strong> a wreath, holding in<br />
the dexter paw a rose<br />
slipped gules, leaved and barbed vert : motto, Ornat fortem<br />
pnidcnl'ut. Lyon Register.<br />
SIR. DAVID DUNBAR <strong>of</strong> Baldoon, Bart, gules, a lion rampant argent, with a<br />
bordure <strong>of</strong> the second, charged with ten roses <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a horse-head<br />
argent, bridled gules ; supporters, two lions gardant argent, each<br />
<strong>of</strong> their fore paws, a rose slipped .yvfer ; motto, Firmior quo patior.<br />
