THOMAS MOIR <strong>of</strong> Otterburn, whose grandfather was a second son <strong>of</strong> the family<br />

<strong>of</strong> Abergeldie, argent, three negroes' heads couped, proper, within a bordure coun-<br />

ter-indented, sable and or.<br />

Those <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> MOIR and MORISON carry Moors' heads, relative to their<br />

name.<br />

Mr WILLIAM MOIR <strong>of</strong> Hilton, Advocate, or, three Moors' heads couped,<br />

distilling drops <strong>of</strong> blood, proper, wreathed about with bay leaves vert ; crest, u<br />

dexter arm from the shoulder issuing out <strong>of</strong> a cloud, holding a branch <strong>of</strong> laurel<br />

MORISON <strong>of</strong> Dairsie, in Fife, azure, three Saracens' heads conjoined in one neck,<br />

proper, the faces looking to the chief dexter and sinister sides <strong>of</strong> the shield. Mac-<br />

MORISON <strong>of</strong> Bogney, the same, with this difference, that the uppermost head was<br />

affixed by a wreath to the other two. Mackenzie's <strong>Heraldry</strong>.<br />

HENRY MORISON, sometime Writer to the Signet, descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong><br />

Dairsie, carries as Dairsie, with two falcons' heads azure, couped in the flanks, for<br />

difference ; crest, a serpent issuing out <strong>of</strong> the torce, proper : motto, Pretio pru-<br />

dentia prastat. Lyon Register.<br />

MORISON <strong>of</strong> Prestongrange, argent, three Moors' heads couped sable, 2 and i,<br />

and banded <strong>of</strong> the first ; for crest, he carries the three heads <strong>of</strong> Dersay, with the<br />

motto, Pretio prudentia praestat. New Register.<br />

EDINGTON <strong>of</strong> Balberton, azure, three savage heads couped argent. Lyon Re-<br />

gister.<br />

The chief family <strong>of</strong> this name was EDINGTON <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Berwick,<br />

now extinct.<br />

ETHLINGTON <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, argent, three boys' heads erased gules. Font's Manu-<br />

script.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> JEW, in England, carry Jews' heads: As Sir JOHN JEW <strong>of</strong><br />

Whitefield, argent, a cheveron between three Jews' heads couped sable, as relative<br />

to the name.<br />

The arm <strong>of</strong> a man is frequently carried as the emblem <strong>of</strong> strength ; as in the<br />

bearing <strong>of</strong> SCLAVONIA, or, an arm clothed gules, holding a scimitar argent. And<br />

the arms <strong>of</strong> BOSNIA, a famous province in Dacia, azure, an arm armed or, holding<br />

a sword erect, proper.<br />

The ARMSTRONGS in the south <strong>of</strong> Scotland, as relative to their name, argent, a<br />

dexter arm issuing from the sinister side <strong>of</strong> the shield, clothed gules, holding a tree<br />

eradiant in pale, proper, broken at the top ; and some <strong>of</strong> the name has the arm<br />

holding a sword, as in our old books.<br />

ARMSTRONG <strong>of</strong> Mangerton, argent, three pallets azure, which, as John Feme<br />

says, represent strength ; and for crest, an arm from the shoulder, armed, proper.<br />

ARMSTRONG <strong>of</strong> Whittock, descended <strong>of</strong> Mangerton, argent, three pallets sable ;<br />

crest, an arm from the shoulder gules ; motto, Invictus maneo. New Register.<br />

FRANCIS ARMSTRONG, son to John Armstrong <strong>of</strong> Parknow, azure, a fesse or, between<br />

two arms armed, and couped at the shoulder argent; crest, an arm issuing<br />

out <strong>of</strong> a cloud holding a club, proper: motto, Invicta labore. New Register.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> FENDER, azure, a dexter hand holding, upon the point <strong>of</strong> a<br />

sword argent, an otter's head couped or. Pont's Manuscript.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> JACK, argent, a cheveron azure, between two crescents gules in<br />

chiet, and in base an arm armed <strong>of</strong> the second, holding a sword, proper, hiked and<br />

. TREMAINS in Devonshire in England, carries arms relative to the name; as<br />

Guillim, in his- Display, gules, three dexter arms conjoined at the shoulders, and<br />

flexed in triangle or, with fists folded argent. Plate X. fig. 29.<br />

Sylvester Petra Sancta has the same arms from Guillim which he thus describes,<br />

" Brachia tria auro manicata, & qua2 flexis cubrtis more pugillum videntur ictura<br />

" validum interminari, in miniato scuti alveolo invicem juncta sunt."
