but when none would undertake that hazardous en-<br />

terprise, a valorous gentleman came and said to the King, Dalziel, which signifies,<br />

as I am informed by those who pretend to know the old Scots language, I<br />

dare ; which attempt he effectually performed to the King's satisfaction. And his<br />

posterity took this remarkable bearing, and the word Dalziel for their surname,<br />

when surnames came to be used, with the signification there<strong>of</strong>, / dare for their<br />

motto ; the crest being a sword in pale, proper ; supporters, two men in armour<br />

cap-a-pie, with round targets ; now used by this ancient family, which stood up<br />

eminently for King Robert Bruce, as did Sir Robert Dal'ziel for King David<br />

Bruce, who got from that King the barony <strong>of</strong> Selkirk ; as by a charter, <strong>of</strong> the<br />

date I5th May 1365. His successor was Sir John Dalziel, Knight from whom<br />

was descended Robert Dalziel <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, who firmly adhered to Queen Mary in<br />

all her troubles. He was father <strong>of</strong> another Robert, who was knighted by King<br />

James VI. <strong>of</strong> Scotland ; and afterwards, for his own merit, and the constant loyalty<br />

<strong>of</strong> his ancestors in all time past, was by King Charles I. raised to the honour <strong>of</strong><br />

Lord Dalziel, 1 8th <strong>of</strong> September 1628; and thereafter made Earl <strong>of</strong> CARNWATH,<br />

in the year 1639. He married Margaret, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Robert Crichton <strong>of</strong><br />

Ckmy, by whom he had Robert his successor, and Sir John Dalziel <strong>of</strong> Glenae,<br />

<strong>of</strong> whom is descended'the present Earl <strong>of</strong> Carnwath.<br />

Which Robert, second Earl <strong>of</strong> Carnwath, was a great sufferer for his loyalty to<br />

King Charles I. and II. He married Christian, daughter <strong>of</strong> William Douglas <strong>of</strong><br />

Drumlanrig, one <strong>of</strong> the progenitors <strong>of</strong> the Dukes <strong>of</strong> Queensberry, by whom he<br />

had Gavin, his son and successor, and father <strong>of</strong> James and John, both Earls <strong>of</strong><br />

Carnwath. The last Earl, John, died unmarried, whose estate and honour devolved<br />

upon Sir Robert Dalziel <strong>of</strong> Glenae, Bart, now Earl <strong>of</strong> Carnwath, who carries<br />

the foresaid achievement.<br />

THOMAS DALYELL <strong>of</strong> Binns, Lieutenant-General <strong>of</strong> Scotland in the reign <strong>of</strong> King<br />

Charles II. carries the same arms with his chief, with the addition <strong>of</strong> a dexter can-<br />

ton, argent, charged with a sword and pistol saltier-ways proper ; crest,<br />

hand brandishing a scimitar ; the shield cottised with two pavilion-poles, in place<br />

<strong>of</strong> supporters ; motto, / dare. New Register. And there,<br />

JOHN 'DALZIEL, Merchant in London, son to William Dalziel, sometime Commissary<br />

<strong>of</strong> Wigton, descended <strong>of</strong> the house <strong>of</strong> Dalziel, now Earl <strong>of</strong> Carnwath, carries<br />

the arms <strong>of</strong> the family within a bordure ingrailed argent ; crest, a demi-man<br />

brandishing a scimitar proper ; motto, / dare.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> WALTERTON or WATERSTON, azure, a naked man riding on a dol-<br />

phin, and playing on a harp or. Workman's Manuscript.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> CARWOOD or CARVEWOOD, parted per fesse, sable and argent, on<br />

the first a demi-man, proper, holding in his right hand a sword pale-ways, and in<br />

the left a<br />

carpenter's axe, all proper ; and in base, the branch <strong>of</strong> an oak tree,<br />

acorncd vert ; as relative to the name. Workman's Manuscript.<br />

GAVIN DRUMMOND, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Kildies, which was descended <strong>of</strong><br />

Drummond <strong>of</strong> Pitkellanie, or, three bars waved gules, over all a naked man naiant<br />

in pale, holding in his right hand a sword ; crest, a dexter hand holding a spear.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> OSWALD, azure, a naked boy pointing at a star in the dexter chief<br />

And in our New Register, the arms <strong>of</strong> JAMES OSWALD <strong>of</strong> Fingalton are matriculated<br />

thus ; azure, a savage wreathed about the middle with bay leaves, having<br />

a sheaf <strong>of</strong> arrows hanging by his side, and bearing a bow in his left hand, all<br />

proper, and pointing with the other hand to a comet, placed in the dexter chief<br />

point or ; crest, a dexter hand issuing out <strong>of</strong> a cloud, and pointing to a star <strong>of</strong><br />

eight rays, proper : motto, Forti favet ccelum. And in the same Register, it was<br />

permitted to the said James Oswald to impale with the above-written coat the<br />

bearing <strong>of</strong> Elizabeth Gillespie, his deceased spouse, being azure, in base, a ship<br />

under sail argent; in the sinister canton, a hand couped, gauntled, and grasping a<br />

-word, proper.
