them stars, <strong>of</strong> so many points.<br />

i'S <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, argent, three stars <strong>of</strong> six points waved azure, Plate X. fig. 15.<br />

and, in the dexter canton, the badge <strong>of</strong> Knight Baronet ; supporters, two greyhounds,<br />

proper, collared azure, and charged with three star-, ; crest, a boar's head<br />

couped or ; with the motto, Be traist. This family was in use to quarter their<br />

arms (till <strong>of</strong> late) witli these <strong>of</strong> the surname <strong>of</strong> Aberkerder, \\Lgules, three bcar\<br />

heads erased or, mu/zlcd sable.<br />

The first <strong>of</strong> this family was Berhvaldns Flandrensis. The nanu- FLASDK.I<br />

says Sir James Dalrymple, in the Appendix to his Historical Collections, is frequently<br />

to be found in the Charters <strong>of</strong> Kelso and Paisley. And it is not to be doubted<br />

but Flandrensis, Flawing, and Flammaticns, are all one surname, frequent in old<br />

charters, given to persons residing in Scotland come from Flanders; and that these<br />

in the South and West <strong>of</strong> Scotland, have retained the name Flandrensis, or Fleming<br />

; but these in Murray have taken their surname from their lands, as Innes <strong>of</strong><br />

that Ilk and have made their arms ;' agreeable to those <strong>of</strong> the old Murrays in the<br />

shire <strong>of</strong> Murray. I have seen a transumpt <strong>of</strong> the charter <strong>of</strong> Malcolm VI. <strong>of</strong> the<br />

lands <strong>of</strong> Innes, granted to Beriwa/dus Flandrensis, penes Dom. de Innes ; as also, a<br />

principal one, granted by Alexander II. in the i2th year <strong>of</strong> his reign, which confirms<br />

the lands <strong>of</strong> Innes, to Walter Innes the son <strong>of</strong> John, the son <strong>of</strong> Beriwald<br />

Flandrensis. In a charter <strong>of</strong> Kind David II. <strong>of</strong> the Forestry <strong>of</strong> Boyne, amongst<br />

the witnesses is Robertus de Innes, Dominns cjusdem.<br />

JAMES INNES <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, was Armour-Bearer to King James III. He gets from<br />

that king several lands in the shire <strong>of</strong> Elgin ; as by that king's charter, (in<br />

the Earl <strong>of</strong> Haddington's Collections)<br />

The cadets <strong>of</strong> this family are as follows in the New Register.<br />

ALEXANDER INNES <strong>of</strong> Blairton, descended <strong>of</strong> Innes <strong>of</strong> Benwall, argent,<br />

a fesse<br />

between three stars azure; crest, a primrose, proper, and thereupon a bee sucking<br />

the same ; with the motto, E labore dulcedo. These arms were altered by a new<br />

warrant under the Lyons' hand and seal, dated pth <strong>of</strong> November 1688, in favours <strong>of</strong><br />

Mr Robert Innes, now <strong>of</strong> Blairton, Writer to his Majesty's signet and Lyon-Depute,<br />

thus, ermine, three stars, two and one azure; crest, a thistle, proper, with a<br />

bee sucking the flower there<strong>of</strong> : motto, E labore dulcedo.<br />

Mr ROBERT INNES, Minister <strong>of</strong> Gamry, descended <strong>of</strong> Innes <strong>of</strong> Benwall, argent,<br />

a fesse ingrailed between three stars azure, with Blairton's first crest and motto, tc.<br />

Mr JOHN INNES, parson <strong>of</strong> Balhalvie, descended <strong>of</strong> Benwall, carries the same<br />

arms and crest, but makes the fesse waved. And Thomas Innes, another cadet<br />

<strong>of</strong> Benwall, the same arms and crest, but counter-embattles the fesse.<br />

JAMES INNES, Writer in Edinburgh, argent, a cross pate'e between three stars,<br />

azure ; crest, two hands joined fesse-ways, grasping a sword, all : proper motto,<br />

Dltat servata fides.' New Register.<br />

JAMES INNES <strong>of</strong> Thursten, descended <strong>of</strong> Innes <strong>of</strong> Innermarkie, argent, three<br />

stars, each <strong>of</strong> five points, within a bordure indented azure ; crest, a star ot six<br />

rays, environed with clouds proper : motto, Dum spiro,<br />

ccelestia spero.<br />

JOHN INNES <strong>of</strong> Edingight, argent, three stars azure, within a bordure cheque<br />

<strong>of</strong><br />

the first and second ; crest, a branch <strong>of</strong> : palm slipped, proper motto, Ornatur ra-<br />

dix fronde. Lyon Register.<br />

ALEXANDER INNES Merchant in Edinburgh, third son to the deceased William<br />

Innes, sometime in Barnyards, in the parish <strong>of</strong> Peterhead and shire ot Aberdeen,<br />

whose predecessors \vere for .many years heritors <strong>of</strong> a part ot the lands ot Pitiour<br />

in the said shire, being descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Balveny in the shire ot Bunt!,<br />

carries ardent, three stars <strong>of</strong> six rays azure, within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the second, char-<br />

ged with eight roundlets or ; crest, an increscent proper : with this motto, Jerecois<br />

pour donner. As in the Lyon Register and Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

The English, when stars are <strong>of</strong> six points<br />

or more, blazon them stars <strong>of</strong> so many<br />
