MURRAY <strong>of</strong> Falahall, <strong>of</strong> late designed <strong>of</strong> Philiphaugh, an ancient family in Teviotdale,<br />
argent, a hunting-horn sable, stringed and garnished gules on a chief<br />
azure, three stars <strong>of</strong> the first ;. crest, a demi-man clothed in green, winding an<br />
hunting-horn, proper : motto, Hinc usque superna venabor. These <strong>of</strong> this family<br />
have been long heritable Sheriffs <strong>of</strong> Selkirk and the Forest. Their ancient char-<br />
ter, as Sir James Dalrymple, in his Collections, tells us, is from James Lord Douglas^<br />
to Roger de Moravia, the son <strong>of</strong> Archibald <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Fala, in the year 1321,<br />
Of whom was descended, Sir John Murray, one <strong>of</strong> the Commissioners for the shira<br />
<strong>of</strong> Selkirk to the Parliament, in the year 1612, who was designed <strong>of</strong> Falahall -<br />
r<br />
and these <strong>of</strong> the family since have been stiled <strong>of</strong> Philiphaugh.<br />
MURRAY <strong>of</strong> Blackbarony, in the South, a knightly family, claims also an ancient<br />
descent ; for which see Dalrymple's Collections. And, in the Earl <strong>of</strong> Haddington's<br />
Collections, there is a charter <strong>of</strong> Robert Duke <strong>of</strong> Albany, Governor <strong>of</strong> Scot-<br />
land, <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Traquair and Shillinglaw, to William Watson and his<br />
spouse Janet, daughter to John Carmichael, and to the heirs <strong>of</strong> their body ; which<br />
failing, to Andrew Murray, son to the deceased John Murray <strong>of</strong> Blackbarony, from<br />
whom is descended the present Laird <strong>of</strong> Blackbarony, who carries argent, a fetterlock<br />
azure, on a chief <strong>of</strong> the last, three stars <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a dexter hand<br />
holding a scroll, proper : motto, Deum time. As in our old books and New<br />
Register.<br />
MURRAY <strong>of</strong> Elibank, in Selkirkshire ; the first <strong>of</strong> which family was Sir Gideon<br />
Murray, Treasurer-Depute to King James VI. third son to Andrew Murray <strong>of</strong><br />
Blackbarony, and his wife Grissel Bethune, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Creigh : Their son Sir<br />
Patrick was made a Lord <strong>of</strong> Parliament by King Charles I. in the year 1643. He<br />
married Elizabeth, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir James Dundas <strong>of</strong> Arniston, by whom he had<br />
his son and successor, Patrick Lord Elibank. He married Elizabeth Stewart,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> John, first Earl <strong>of</strong> Traquair, father and mother <strong>of</strong> Alexander Murray,<br />
third Lord Elibank, who married Anne, daughter <strong>of</strong> Alexander Burnet, Arch-<br />
Bishop <strong>of</strong> St Andrews, by whom he had Alexander, the present Lord Elibank.<br />
The arms he now useth bespeak him rather a cadet <strong>of</strong> Tullibardin, than <strong>of</strong><br />
Blackbarony, viz. azure, three stars within a double tressure counter-flowered<br />
argent, and, in the centre, a marlet or, supported by two horses argent, bridled<br />
gules; crest, a lion rampant gules, holding a battle-ax, proper: motto, Virtute fideque.<br />
As in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
MURRAY <strong>of</strong> Livingston, descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong> Sir Gideon Murray <strong>of</strong><br />
Elibank, Treasurer-Depute to King James VI. or, a fetter-lock azure, on a chief<br />
<strong>of</strong> the second, three stars argent, within a bordure indented gules ; crest, a hand,<br />
proper, holding a fetter-lock or : motto, Inde securior. New Register.-<br />
MURRAY <strong>of</strong> Spot, a second son <strong>of</strong> the first Lord Elibank, azure, a martlet-, between<br />
three stars argent, within a double tressure, flowered and counter-flowered or^<br />
all surrounded within a bordure parted per pale, <strong>of</strong> the second and third; crest, a<br />
horse argent, furnished gules : motto, Virtute fideque. Lyon Register.<br />
MURRAY Earl <strong>of</strong> DYSART, azure, an imperial crown or, between three stars<br />
argent, within a double tressure flowered and counter-flowered <strong>of</strong> the second; crest,<br />
a mermaid, holding a mirror in her right hand, and in her left a comb, all proper ;<br />
supporters, two lions gules, collared azure, and charged, with three stars : argent<br />
motto, Tout pret.<br />
The first <strong>of</strong> this family was William Murray, a son <strong>of</strong> William Murray, parson<br />
<strong>of</strong> Dysart, a younger brother <strong>of</strong> Murray <strong>of</strong> Woodend in Perthshire, who descended<br />
in the reign <strong>of</strong> King James III. <strong>of</strong> a younger son <strong>of</strong> Tullibardin ; to whom<br />
King Charles I. granted letters patent for making him Earl <strong>of</strong> Dysart Lord<br />
Huntingtour ; but those letters did not pass the seals till the third year <strong>of</strong> the<br />
reign <strong>of</strong> King Charles II. He had, by his wife Elizabeth Bruce, <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong><br />
Clackmanan, two : daughters The eldest, Elizabeth Countess <strong>of</strong> Dysart, procured<br />
letters patent, whereby the honour was conferred on herself and her heirs. She<br />
was twice married ; first, to Sir Lionel Talmash <strong>of</strong> Hemlingham in England, and<br />
bore to him Lionel Talmash, Lord Huntingtour and Earl <strong>of</strong> Dysart, and two-<br />
daughters.. The first, Elizabeth Talmash Dutchess <strong>of</strong> Argyle, and mother to the<br />
