The name <strong>of</strong> NIMMO, sometimes wrote NEMMOCK, or, on a saltier gules, cantoned<br />

with four crescents <strong>of</strong> the last, as many cinquefoils <strong>of</strong> the first. Font's Ma-<br />

SIMPSON <strong>of</strong> Udoeh, argent, on a chief vert, three crescents <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a<br />

falcon volant, proper : motto, Alls nutrior. New Register. And there,<br />

ROBERT SIMPSON <strong>of</strong> Thornton bears the same, but makes the chief indented ; and,<br />

for crest, a crescent or : motto, Tandem implebitur.<br />

BLACK, <strong>of</strong> Temple, argent, a cheveron sable, between two mullets in chief, and a<br />

cents argent.<br />

A family <strong>of</strong> that name in Fife have their arms matriculated thus, sable ,<br />

a cheveron<br />

ermine, between three crescents argent j crest, a cock, within the horns <strong>of</strong> a crescent :<br />

croissant de vair, where he says, inveniuntur etiam lunae, pellita, vittatee, ac tesserulis<br />

vermiculatte, that is, crescents <strong>of</strong> furrs, bars and bends> and cheque <strong>of</strong> which he<br />

,<br />

gives examples.<br />

In England many families have crescents for their principal armorial figures..<br />

A few examples I shall here subjoin.<br />

LEE EARL <strong>of</strong> LITCHFIELD, for his paternal coat, argent, a fesse between three<br />

crescents sable . The family <strong>of</strong> Lee has been very ancient in the county Palatine<br />

<strong>of</strong> Chester, and took its surname, as is presumed, from the lordship <strong>of</strong> Lee in that<br />

county.<br />

Sir EDWARD HENRY LEE <strong>of</strong> Ditchly, Baronet, was, by Charles IL's letters patent,<br />

bearing date the 5th <strong>of</strong> June, in the 2,6th year <strong>of</strong> his reign, created Baron <strong>of</strong> Spilsbury,<br />

in the county <strong>of</strong> Bucks, Viscount Quarendon, and Earl <strong>of</strong> Litchfield. He<br />

married Lady Charlotte, one <strong>of</strong> the natural daughters <strong>of</strong> King Charles II. by<br />

Barbara Villiers Dutchess <strong>of</strong> Cleveland, and with her had thirteen sons and five<br />

daughters.<br />

JERMYN Lord JERMYN, sable, a crescent, between two stars in pale argent. This<br />

family was dignified by King Charles I. JERMYN Lord DOVER carried the same,<br />

with a brotherly difference, viz. a crescent in the dexter chief point. He was dig-<br />

nified by King James II. May 3d 1685.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> LUCY, m England, azure, a, crescent argent. And there the name<br />

<strong>of</strong> PIERREPONT, gules, three crescents argent.<br />

COVENTRY, sable , a fesse ermine\ between three crescents or..<br />
