young, and was one <strong>of</strong> the household <strong>of</strong> Philip King <strong>of</strong> Spain,<br />
and was made a<br />
Knight <strong>of</strong> the Order <strong>of</strong> Calatrava; upon his return home, lie was, by King Jams.--.<br />
VI. made one <strong>of</strong> the gentlemen <strong>of</strong> his Bed-Chamber, and Comptroller to his Majesty's<br />
Exchequer and Treasury in Scotland. He got from his. father the lands <strong>of</strong><br />
East-Barns, which were given by King Robert the Bruce to the family <strong>of</strong> Seaton,<br />
as before with the sword ; supporting the crown, which the family <strong>of</strong> Barns has<br />
been in use to carry as an additional figure, because (as Sir George Mackenzie says<br />
in his Science <strong>of</strong> <strong>Heraldry</strong>) these lands were at first granted with that coat <strong>of</strong> augmentation.<br />
He married the eldest daughter <strong>of</strong> the Lord Forbes, from whom K<br />
descended the present George Seaton <strong>of</strong> Barns.<br />
SEATON Earl <strong>of</strong> DUNFERMLINE carried quarterly first and fourth Seaton; second<br />
and third argent, on a fesse gules, three cinquefoils <strong>of</strong> the first ; supporters, two<br />
horses at liberty ; crest, a crescent gules, with the word semper. The first <strong>of</strong> this<br />
family was Alexander Seaton, third son <strong>of</strong> George Lord Seaton, and his Lady<br />
Isabel Hamilton ; he, for his bright parts, was first commendator <strong>of</strong> Pluscardine,<br />
and after was one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice, and then President <strong>of</strong> that<br />
learned Bench ; and, by King James VI. created Lord Urquhart, thereafter designed<br />
Lord Fyvie ; and, in the year 1605, was created Earl <strong>of</strong> Dunfermline, and<br />
was High Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Scotland for eighteen years, till he departed this life, the<br />
i6th <strong>of</strong> June 1622. He was thrice married, first, with a daughter <strong>of</strong> Patrick, Lord<br />
Drummond ; 2dly, To a daughter <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Rothes. By these two wives he<br />
had only daughters; and, by his third wife Margaret, daughter to John Lord Yes-<br />
ter, he had Charles his son and successor, who was one <strong>of</strong> King Charles II.'s Privy<br />
Council, and Lord Privy Seal, in the year 1671. He married Mary, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
the Earl <strong>of</strong> Morton, and with her had Alexander, who died unmarried ; Charles<br />
killed aboard the fleet in the sea-fight against the Dutch, anno 1672 and ; James,<br />
who succeeded his brother Alexander in the honours ; and his only daughter Henrietta,<br />
married first to William, Earl <strong>of</strong> Wigton and ; after to William, Earl <strong>of</strong><br />
Crawford, and had issue.<br />
James, Earl <strong>of</strong> Dunfermline, was one <strong>of</strong> the Scots Peers, who, in the year<br />
1688, kept firm in his duty to King James VII. and joined the Viscount <strong>of</strong> Dundee<br />
with a troop <strong>of</strong> horse at the battle <strong>of</strong> Killicrankie, for which he was forfeited<br />
by the Parliament 1690. He retired to France, and died at St Germains 1694,<br />
having no issue by his wife Jean, daughter <strong>of</strong> Lewis, Marquis <strong>of</strong> : Huntly So that<br />
the honours, by reason <strong>of</strong> the entail to heirs-male, fell to George Seaton <strong>of</strong> Barns,<br />
were it not for the forfeitures.<br />
SEATON <strong>of</strong> St Germains, or, a fesse between three crescents in chief, and as many<br />
tlower-de-luces in base gules, bar-ways ; so cut upon stone above the entry to the<br />
house <strong>of</strong> St Germains. The first <strong>of</strong> this family was John, a younger son <strong>of</strong> Ro-<br />
bert, first Earl <strong>of</strong> Winton, and his lady, Margaret Montgomery, daughter to<br />
Hugh, Earl <strong>of</strong> Eglinton. He married one <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Kelly,<br />
for which the<br />
flower-de-luces are added in base.<br />
SEATON Viscount <strong>of</strong> KINGSTON, quarterly, first and fourth Seaton, second and<br />
third argent, a dragon witli wings expanded, tail moved vert, as a coat <strong>of</strong> augmentation,<br />
being the crest <strong>of</strong> the family ; supporters, two negroes wreathed about the<br />
head and middle with laurel, proper ; crest, a crescent : flaming motto, Habet fc?<br />
suam. The first <strong>of</strong> this family was Sir Alexander Seaton, a younger son <strong>of</strong> George,<br />
second Earl <strong>of</strong> Winton. By his first wife Anna Hay, daughter <strong>of</strong> Francis Earl <strong>of</strong><br />
Errol, who, for his good and loyal services to his Sovereigns Charles I. and II. he<br />
was by the last created Viscount <strong>of</strong> KINGSTON, 6th January 1650. He married<br />
Elizabeth, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Sir Archibald Douglas <strong>of</strong> Whittingham ; by whom<br />
he had Archibald his successor, and James who succeeded his brother in the honours,<br />
and Elizabeth, wife <strong>of</strong> William Hay <strong>of</strong> Drumelzier.<br />
SEATON <strong>of</strong> Garleton, as in the Lyon Register, carries first<br />
quarterly, and fourth<br />
Seaton, second and third Buchan, all within a bordure, quarterly, azure and or ;<br />
crest, a star <strong>of</strong> six points ; with the motto, Habet if suam. The first <strong>of</strong> this fami-<br />
ly was Sir John Seaton, Bart, eldest son <strong>of</strong> George, second Earl <strong>of</strong> Winton, and<br />
his second wife, Elizabeth Maxwell, daughter <strong>of</strong> the Lord Herries.
