OF CELESTIAL FIGURES,<br />

the king's daughter to France, in order to her marriage with Lewis the Dauphine,<br />

eldest son <strong>of</strong> Charles VII. <strong>of</strong> France. He died the 5th year <strong>of</strong> the reign <strong>of</strong><br />

James II. and was interred in the Collegiate Church <strong>of</strong> Seaton. He had with his<br />

lady, Janet Dunbar, daughter to George Earl <strong>of</strong> March, George his successor, and<br />

a daughter, Janet, married to Robert Keith, Marischal <strong>of</strong> Scotland.<br />

Which George, Lord Seaton, married Lady Jean Stewart, only daughter and heir<br />

<strong>of</strong> John Stewart Earl <strong>of</strong> Buchan, in whose right lie claimed the Earldom <strong>of</strong><br />

Buchan : And ever since, the family, to show their right <strong>of</strong> pretension, have been<br />

in use to carry the feudal arms <strong>of</strong> that family, and marshal them with their own.<br />

Their son John, master <strong>of</strong> Seaton, died in the lifetime <strong>of</strong> his father, leaving issue<br />

by Mary, his wife, daughter <strong>of</strong> the Lord Lindsay, George, who succeeded his grandfather<br />

in his estate and honours.<br />

Which George, third Lord Seaton, married Isabel, daughter <strong>of</strong> Colin first Earl<br />

<strong>of</strong> Argyle. She bore to him George his successor ; John, who married Sinclair,<br />

the heiress <strong>of</strong> Northrig, the first <strong>of</strong> the Seatons <strong>of</strong> that family, and a daughter,<br />

Margaret, married to William Maitland <strong>of</strong> Lethington. He died 1508, and was<br />

succeeded by<br />

George, fourth Lord Seaton, who married Jean Hepburn, eldest daughter to<br />

Patrick first Earl <strong>of</strong> Bothwell. He was killed with King James IV. at Flodden,<br />

1513. His own arms, and his lady's, are yet to be seen on a great stone above<br />

the principal gate <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Seaton, thus, quarterly, first and fourth Seaton,<br />

as before ; second and third, three garbs, for the Earldom <strong>of</strong> Buchan, impaled with<br />

those <strong>of</strong> his lady's ; also, quarterly, first and fourth, on a cheveron, two lions<br />

pulling at a rose, for Hepburn ; second and third, a bend for Vass Lord Dirleton ;<br />

which arms are adorned with helmet and mantlings, and a mertrix-head for a<br />

crest ; supported on the right side by a mertrix, and on the left by a lion ; and<br />

above all, for a motto, Set forward. He had with his lady, a son, George, his suc-<br />

cessor, and a daughter, Marion, married to Hugh Earl <strong>of</strong> Eglinton.<br />

George succeeded his father. He married Elizabeth Hay, daughter <strong>of</strong> John<br />

Lord Tester, whose arms are dimidiate with those <strong>of</strong> her husband's in the House<br />

<strong>of</strong> Seaton. He had, with her, two sons, George, his successor, and John, first <strong>of</strong><br />

the family <strong>of</strong> Carriston : Likewise four daughters, Marion, married to William<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> Monteith ; Margaret, to Sir Robert Logan <strong>of</strong> Restalrig ; Helen, to Hugh<br />

Lord Somerville ; Beatrix, to Sir Walter Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Dunlugas. He departed this<br />

life the iyth <strong>of</strong> : June 1545 And was succeeded by<br />

George, sixth Lord Seaton, was Provost <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, in the Regency <strong>of</strong> Queen<br />

Mary <strong>of</strong> Lorrain, and was commissioned by the States <strong>of</strong> Scotland, the i6th <strong>of</strong><br />

March 1557, to treat with the French King about the marriage <strong>of</strong> Queen Mary<br />

with Francis the Dauphin. When Queen Mary returned to Scotland from<br />

France, he was Master <strong>of</strong> the Household to her Majesty. In the House <strong>of</strong> Seaton his<br />

picture is curiously done, in his own time, where he is made to hold the batton <strong>of</strong><br />

his <strong>of</strong>fice, being red seme <strong>of</strong> M. R. ensigned with imperial crowns. He was made<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the Lords <strong>of</strong> her Privy Council, and was one <strong>of</strong> the Knights <strong>of</strong> the most<br />

his arms<br />

noble Order <strong>of</strong> the Thistle ; for, on the great hall <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Seaton,<br />

are yet to be seen, quartered with those <strong>of</strong> the Earldom <strong>of</strong> Buchan, surrounded<br />

with the collar <strong>of</strong> that Order, with the badge <strong>of</strong> St Andrew : pendent Which,<br />

with the Sovereign's, are to be seen finely carved on the boxing <strong>of</strong> the chimney <strong>of</strong><br />

that magnificent hall. He likewise repaired the fore part <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Seaton,<br />

and especially that room called Samson's Hall, which he adorned with a ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> a<br />

curious structure ; whereupon are twenty-eight large achievements, being those <strong>of</strong><br />

Scotland, France, Lorrain,. and the noble families that were allied with his family,<br />

curiously embossed and illuminated, and are the most exact pieces <strong>of</strong> armories to<br />

be met with. He firmly adhered to Queen Mary in all her troubles with an inviolable<br />

fidelity. Her son King James VI. had a great respect and value for him,<br />

insomuch, that he was pleased, in the year 1583, to send him ambassador extraordinary<br />

to the court <strong>of</strong> France ; which negotiation he performed with honour and<br />

success; and which commission is in the charter-chest <strong>of</strong> Seaton. He died soon<br />

after his return, on the 8th January 1584. He had, for his lady, Isabel Hamilton,<br />

daughter to Sir William Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Sanquhar, Lord High Treasurer <strong>of</strong> Scotland,<br />

in the reign <strong>of</strong> King James V. and his wife Katharine Kennedy, a daughter <strong>of</strong>.
