Caldwell <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, one <strong>of</strong> the commissioners for the Shire <strong>of</strong> Renfre\7, about the<br />

year 1693. The lands are now possessed by John Earl <strong>of</strong> Dundonald.<br />

JOHN CALDWELL in Glasgow, as in our New Register, parted per pule, azurr<br />

and sable, a hart's head couped or, and in chief, three wells or fountains, proper.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> YOUNG curries piles ; as YOUNG <strong>of</strong> Oldbar, argent, three pile.-.<br />

sable, on a chiei' <strong>of</strong> the last, as many annulets or ; crest, a lion issuing out <strong>of</strong> u<br />

wreath gules, holding a sword in pale, proper ; motto, Rob^ii prudcnti i prxstat ;<br />

as in the Lyon Register.<br />

Sir JOHN YOUNG <strong>of</strong> Leny, argent on three piles sable, as many annulets or ;<br />

crest, a dexter arm holding a lance in bend, proper : motto, Press through.<br />

THOMAS YOUNG <strong>of</strong> Rosebank, argent, three piles indents sable, on a chief <strong>of</strong> the<br />

last, as many annulets or ; crest, an anchor placed in the sea, and surmounted <strong>of</strong><br />

a dove with an olive branch in its beak, all proper : motto, Sperando spiro.<br />

YOUNG, sometime Bishop <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, argent, three piles sable, on a chief<br />

gules, as many annulets or, and a mullet for difference on the middle pile. Extracted<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the Lyon Register, 1673.<br />

ANDREW YOUNG <strong>of</strong> Easttield, writer to his Majesty's Signet, argent on three<br />

piles sable, as many annulets or, with a star <strong>of</strong> six points <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a<br />

dexter hand holding a : pen, proper with the motto, Scripta tiianent ; all in the<br />

Lyon Register.<br />

YOUNGER <strong>of</strong> Hopperston, argent, on three piles<br />

in point sable, as many annu-<br />

lets or ; and, on a chief gules, a crescent between two mullets <strong>of</strong> the first. Font's<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> YOUNGER, it seems, is <strong>of</strong> the same stock with the Youngs-, by their<br />

arms, viz argent, on three piles in point sable, as many annulets or, and, on a chief<br />

gules, a crescent between two mullets <strong>of</strong> the first. Font's Manuscript.<br />

When we say piles<br />

point, then the points <strong>of</strong> the piles meet and join<br />

in the base <strong>of</strong> the shield.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> LOVELL, argent, three piles sable, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a fesse waved<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> LAUTY, sable, three piles in point argent, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a fesse<br />

gules, charged with as many crescents or. Font's Manuscript.<br />

LAUTY <strong>of</strong> Teichonell charges his fesse with one crescent, and LAUTY <strong>of</strong> Myrehouse<br />

added two stars.<br />

POLWARTH <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Berwick, argent, three piles ingrailed gules,<br />

and conjoined in point. This family ended in an heiress, in the reign <strong>of</strong> King<br />

James III. who was married to John Sinclair, eldest son <strong>of</strong> Sinclair <strong>of</strong> Herdmanston<br />

; to whom King James IV. grants a charter <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Polwarth. He<br />

died without heirs-male, leaving behind him two daughters, who were co-heiresses<br />

<strong>of</strong> Polwarth, but not <strong>of</strong> Herdmanston, to which his brother, as heir-male, succeeded.<br />

The eldest was married to George Home <strong>of</strong> Wedderburn, and the other to<br />

his younger brother Patrick, afterwards designed <strong>of</strong> Polwarth, progenitor <strong>of</strong> the<br />

has been in use<br />

present Earl <strong>of</strong> Marchmont ; upon which account that family<br />

to quarter with their own the arms <strong>of</strong> Polwarth ;<br />

and, by their modern paintings,<br />

make the field gules, and the piles indented argent.<br />

When the piles issue from any <strong>of</strong> the sides or angles <strong>of</strong> the shield it is necessary<br />

to name the place from which they issue ; if from the chief, it may be named or<br />

omitted in the blazon.<br />

HENDERSON <strong>of</strong> Fordel, the principal family <strong>of</strong> the name, gules, three piles<br />

iss i-<br />

ing out <strong>of</strong> the sinister side argent, and, on a chief <strong>of</strong> the last, a crescent azure, betwixt<br />

two spots <strong>of</strong> ermine; Esplin's Illuminated Book <strong>of</strong> Arms ; and they are so<br />

illuminated in Workman's Manuscript; but the crescent is there vert, and supported<br />

by two mertrixes ermine ; crest, a hand holding a star, surmounted by a crescent<br />

; with the motto, Sola virtus nobilitat. Plate. IX. fig. 16.<br />

HENRY HENDERSON <strong>of</strong> St Laurence, Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine, parted per pale indented,<br />

sable and argent, two attires <strong>of</strong> an hart counter-changed, on a chief gules a<br />

crescent or, betwixt two tufts <strong>of</strong> ermine; crest, a wheel: motto, Sic cuncta caduca<br />

Lyon Register. Here an indenting is in place <strong>of</strong> the piles, carried by Fordel.
