fallen into disgrace, by giving it to bastards, and their legitimates. Of which 1<br />

shall treat in the chapter <strong>of</strong> the Marks <strong>of</strong> Cadency.<br />

JAMES Duke <strong>of</strong> BERWICK, natural son to King James VII. carries the arms <strong>of</strong><br />

Britain, within a bordure compone, gules and azure ; the first charged with lions<br />

passant gardant or, for England; the second with flower-de-luces <strong>of</strong> France, tinbordure,<br />

thus latjned by Imh<strong>of</strong>f, Limbum e quadris rubeis & cxrulcis compos it urn,<br />

ita tit riibca leonibus Anglis, caruleae Liliis Francicis distinctie.<br />

or tracts<br />

Counter-compone , (which some say cbitnter-gobone) consists <strong>of</strong> two ranges<br />

<strong>of</strong> square pieces alternately <strong>of</strong> different tinctures : For the French say ordinarily,<br />

cojitre-compone , and sometimes eschequete, deux traits ; and the Latins, lirnbus duptici<br />

tractit tesselarurn cotnpositus. Plate VII. fig. 33.<br />

WILLIAM SCOTT, a second son <strong>of</strong> Bevelaw, his father's arms, as before, within a<br />

bordure counter-compone, or and azure. Lyon Register. And there also,<br />

BURNEX <strong>of</strong> Balleladies, descended <strong>of</strong> Burnet <strong>of</strong> Leys, the arms <strong>of</strong> Leys within a<br />

bordure counter-compone, argent and azure ; and for crest, a branch <strong>of</strong> holly, slipped,<br />

proper : motto, Necfluctu, necflatu. New Register.<br />

Bordure cheque consists <strong>of</strong> three ranges or tracts at least, or more, <strong>of</strong> square<br />

pieces alternately <strong>of</strong> different tinctures.<br />

BARCLAY <strong>of</strong> Touch, descended <strong>of</strong> Cullerny, azure, a cheveron or, betwixt three<br />

crosses patee argent, within a bordure cheque <strong>of</strong> the second and first ; <strong>of</strong> which<br />

before, Plate VII. fig. 34. Here the engraver is faulty in making the bordure two<br />

large.<br />

GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Gartur surrounds the arms .<strong>of</strong> Graham, within a bordure cheque ;<br />

and so does Leslie <strong>of</strong> Findrassie with such a bordure. Many more examples are to<br />

be met with in this Treatise, which cannot be properly here repeated. The bordure<br />

is not only varied by accidental forms and charges, but likewise, as the shield<br />

may be parti, coupe, tranche, faille ; so that the bordure is a figure like a second<br />

shield, capable <strong>of</strong> many variations, to difference many descendants <strong>of</strong> one stem.<br />

ROBERT ARBLTHNOT, Merchant in Montrose, descended <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Porterton,<br />

descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Arbuthnot <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, now Viscount <strong>of</strong> Arbuthnot,<br />

azure, a crescent between three stars argent, all within a bordure indent-<br />

ed, and quartered <strong>of</strong> the second and first ; crest, a dove within an adder, disposed<br />

in orle, proper : motto, Innocue ac provide. New Register.<br />

Bordures quartered, {parti and coupe} are frequent with us ; Colonel Henry<br />

Graham, whose father William Graham was brother-german to John Earl <strong>of</strong> Mon-<br />

trose, Viceroy <strong>of</strong> Scotland in the reign <strong>of</strong> King James VI. carried Montrose';,<br />

quartered arms within a bordure, quartered, gules and sable.<br />

ROBERT HAMILTON <strong>of</strong> Presmennan, sometime one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College<br />

<strong>of</strong> Justice, (grandfather to the present Lord Belhaven) descended <strong>of</strong> Hamilton <strong>of</strong><br />

Bruntwood, a lawful brother <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Hamilton, now honoured with the<br />

title ot duke <strong>of</strong> that name, gules, three cinquefoils ermine with a bordure quarterly<br />

vair, and counter-compone <strong>of</strong> argent, and the first. Lyon Register. The English<br />

would call this a bordure purflew, upon the account <strong>of</strong> the furr, as they blazon the arms<br />

<strong>of</strong> Henry Fitzroy Duke <strong>of</strong> Richmond, natural son to King Henry VIII. <strong>of</strong> England,<br />

who carried the imperial ensign <strong>of</strong> that kingdom within a bordure, quarterly, com-<br />

posed <strong>of</strong> purflew ermine, and counter-compone, or and azure.<br />
