KER <strong>of</strong> Ancrum : The first <strong>of</strong> this family was Robert Ker, second son to Sir<br />

Murray <strong>of</strong> Blackbarcny, who bore to him a son, William, who became Earl <strong>of</strong><br />
Lothian, by marrying the only heiress <strong>of</strong> Robert Ker Earl <strong>of</strong> Lothian. Secondly,<br />
he married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Stanly Earl <strong>of</strong> Derby ; and provided the title <strong>of</strong> Eail<br />
<strong>of</strong> Ancrum by the King's approbation to the heir-male <strong>of</strong> that marriage, Charles,<br />
who was Earl <strong>of</strong> Ancrum, who carried quarterly, first and fourth ermine, on a<br />
chief parti, argent and gu/es, a lion passant counter-changed; second and third<br />
gules, on a cheveron argent, three stars or mullets <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a stag's head<br />
and neck couped argent, collared gules, and charged with three mullets argent, is-<br />
suing out <strong>of</strong> an open crown or ; supporters, two stags proper, collared as the crest :<br />
with the motto, Tout droit.<br />
KER <strong>of</strong> Littledean,. descended <strong>of</strong> a second brother <strong>of</strong> Cessford, quarterly, first<br />
and fourth vert, on a cheveron argent, three stars gules, and in base, an unicorn's<br />
head erased <strong>of</strong> the second, for KER ; second and third azure, three crosses moline<br />
argent, for Ainslie <strong>of</strong> Dolphinton, as in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements. But our old<br />
books give for arms to Ainslie <strong>of</strong> Dolphinton, .or, a cross-flory, gules. Sir ANDREW<br />
KER <strong>of</strong> Littledean got the barony <strong>of</strong> the Hirsel in the Merse, from King James V.<br />
because he was the first that brought the news to the king, that the Lord Home<br />
and his followers defeat the English at Haddonridge. This family was designed<br />
KER <strong>of</strong> Hirs>el, as above ; and their arms are illuminated in the house <strong>of</strong> Falahall,<br />
being vert, on a cheveron argent, three stars gules, and in base an unicorn's head<br />
erased <strong>of</strong> the second. The Earls <strong>of</strong> Home acquired the barony <strong>of</strong> Hirsel from Ker<br />
<strong>of</strong> Littledean, which is now the seat <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Home.<br />
Sir ANDREW KER <strong>of</strong> Greenhead, Bart, descended <strong>of</strong> Fernihirst, gules, on a<br />
cheveron argent, three stars or mullets <strong>of</strong> the first, a buck's head erased in base,<br />
and for difference, in chief, a crescent <strong>of</strong> the second. Lyon Register. As in the<br />

KER <strong>of</strong> Chatto, the same with Greenhead, a cadet <strong>of</strong> that family,<br />
within a bor-<br />

KER <strong>of</strong> Cavers, descended <strong>of</strong> Fernihirst ; gules, on a cheveron argent, three<br />
stars ot the first, all within a bordure cheque <strong>of</strong> the second and first ; crest, a stag's<br />
head erased proper, with ten tynes or : motto, Tout droit. Lyon Register.<br />
KER <strong>of</strong> Sutherland-Hall, (representative <strong>of</strong> Ker <strong>of</strong> Yair, who was a cadet <strong>of</strong><br />
Fernihirst) gules, on a cheveron argent, three stars <strong>of</strong> the first, in base, a stag's<br />
fiead erased, (some books, in place <strong>of</strong> it, give a hunting horn or, stringed argent,)<br />
all within a bordure invected <strong>of</strong> the second. ; crest, a dexter hand holding a dag-<br />
ger, proper : motto, Abest timor. Lyon Register.<br />
KER <strong>of</strong> Faldonside ; quarterly, first vert, on a cheveron argent, between three<br />
unicorn's heads erased <strong>of</strong> the last, as many stars gules ; second or, on a bend azure,<br />
three mascles <strong>of</strong> the first ; third as second, and fourth as the first, for Halyburton<br />
<strong>of</strong> Dirleton ; one <strong>of</strong> whose heiresses thia- family married.<br />
KER ot Fairnilee, a cadet <strong>of</strong> Cessford ; vert, on a cheveron argent, three stars<br />

KER <strong>of</strong> SamueKton ; argent, an unicorn salient sable, horned or, an old branch<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Kers, whether <strong>of</strong> Cessford or Fernihirst I know not, for the first <strong>of</strong> this<br />
and took the arms <strong>of</strong> Samuelston <strong>of</strong> that Ilk<br />
family laid aside his paternal bearing,<br />
