OF THE CHEVERON<br />
In the year 1549, this Adam Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Sraeaton made a resignation<br />
<strong>of</strong> the<br />
half <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Craig, in the hands <strong>of</strong> Patrick Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Bolton, superior<br />
there<strong>of</strong>; for a new charter in favours <strong>of</strong> himself in fee, and his mother Helen Hepburn,<br />
relict <strong>of</strong> the deceased Sir Patrick Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Waughton, in liferent. In<br />
which instrument he is again designed Adamus Hepburn, Jilius legitimus quondam<br />
Ptitricii Hepburn de Waugbtoun militis; the witnesses are, Patricia Hepburn dc<br />
IVaugbton, ft atre germano died Adtr, Henrico Hepburn ejus avunculo.<br />
ADAM HEPBURN <strong>of</strong> Smeaton, married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Preston <strong>of</strong> Craigmillar, and<br />
with her had a son, Patrick, from whom is lineally descended the present PATRICK.<br />
HEPBURN <strong>of</strong> Smeaton. This family has been in use formerly to carry gules, on a<br />
cheveron, between three martlets argent, two lions pulling at a rose <strong>of</strong> the first,<br />
(as in Mr Thomas Crawfurd's Manuscript) ; and since, to carry as Waughtoun,<br />
viz. quarterly, first and fourth gules, on a cheveron argent, a rose betwixt two lions<br />
affronts gules, for Hepburn ; second and third argent, an orle gules, and in chief<br />
three martlets sable, for Rutherford ; crest, a horse argent, furnished gules, tied to<br />

The cadets <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Smeaton were Sir Robert Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Alderston,<br />
a tree ; with the motto, Keep tryst.<br />
Captain <strong>of</strong> King James VI. his life-guard, predecessor <strong>of</strong> Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Bearford ;<br />
Francis Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Beanston, another second son <strong>of</strong> Smeaton, predecessor <strong>of</strong> the<br />
present Robert Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Beanston.<br />
ADAM HEPBURN <strong>of</strong> Humbie, quarterly, first and fourth Hepburn, as before ;<br />
second and third argent, three laurel leaves vert, for the name <strong>of</strong> Foulis ; crest,<br />
an oak tree, proper, and a horse passing by the same, saddled and bridled, gules :<br />

The first <strong>of</strong> this family was John Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Kirklandhill, brother to Sir Patrick<br />
Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Waughton, the father <strong>of</strong> Adam Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Smeaton ; <strong>of</strong> whom before.<br />
By an instrument <strong>of</strong> the date I3th <strong>of</strong> August 1539, (in my hands at the<br />
writing here<strong>of</strong>) William Brown, in Little-Markhill, alienates and dispones the half<br />
<strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Stotincleugh, yobanni Hepburn in Kirklandhill, fratri patricii Hepburn<br />
de IVtuigbioun militis. His grandson, Adam Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Kirklandhill, acquired<br />
from James Lawson <strong>of</strong> Humbie the lands <strong>of</strong> Hartside, in the year 1586. He<br />
married Agnes, daughter to Henry Foulis <strong>of</strong> Collington, and his lady, a daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Haldane <strong>of</strong> Gleneagles. His son and successor was Sir Adam Hepburn <strong>of</strong><br />
Humbie, one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice, who married Agnes, daughter<br />
to George Foulis <strong>of</strong> Ravelston, and Master <strong>of</strong> the Mint 1629; and with her<br />
had three sons, Thomas, who died without issue-male : Adam, who succeeded him,<br />
quartered the arms <strong>of</strong> Foulis with Hepburn, upon the account <strong>of</strong> his mother and<br />
grandmother's being <strong>of</strong> that name, and had them so recorded in the Lyon Re-<br />
i ter. He died also without issue-male, and was succeeded by his brother David,<br />
father <strong>of</strong> John, the present laird <strong>of</strong> Humbie. See the arms in Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
HEPBURN <strong>of</strong> Riccarton, descended <strong>of</strong> Hepburn <strong>of</strong> Whitsome in the Merse, who<br />
was a brother <strong>of</strong> Patrick Hepburn Lord Hales, about the year 1450, carried gules,<br />
on a cheveron argent, a rose between two lions combatant <strong>of</strong> the first, and a buckle<br />
in base or. Pont's Manuscript.<br />
PATRICK. HEPBURN <strong>of</strong> Blackcastle, descended <strong>of</strong> Riccarton, the same with Riccarton<br />
: But the buckle is said to be argent, and after the shape <strong>of</strong> a man's heart ;<br />
crest, a horse-head couped, proper, garnished gules : motto, Keep tryst. Lyon Re-<br />
gister.<br />
GEORGE HEPBURN, Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine, the arms <strong>of</strong> Hepburn, with a star-stone in<br />
base, proper ; crest, a mort-head overgrown with moss, proper : motto, Virtute if<br />
prudent in. Lyon Register.<br />
KER Marquis <strong>of</strong> LOTHIAN carries, quarterly, first and fourth azure, the sun in his<br />
splendour, proper, as a coat <strong>of</strong> augmentation, when created Earl <strong>of</strong> Lothian ; second<br />
and third, parted per fesse, gules and vert, on a cheveron argent, between three<br />
masclts or; in chief, and an unicorn's head erased in base <strong>of</strong> the third, three mul-<br />
lets uf the first. But <strong>of</strong> late this family carries in the second and third quarter<br />
only gules, on a cheveron argent, three mullets <strong>of</strong> the first, as being heir <strong>of</strong> KER <strong>of</strong><br />
