Mr JOHN FRANK <strong>of</strong> Boughtridge, vert, on a saltier ingrailed argent, five flowerde-luces<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> WALKER, or, three pallets gules, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a saltier argent,<br />

and on a chief azure, a crescent <strong>of</strong> the third, between two spur-rowels <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> BAKER, argent, on a saltier ingrailed sable, five escalops <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Many honourable and ancient families with us carry the saltier and chief; as<br />

those <strong>of</strong> the surname <strong>of</strong> JQHNSTONE gave for arms, <strong>of</strong> old, argent, a saltier and chief<br />

sable, on the last, three cushions <strong>of</strong> the field, as in our old books <strong>of</strong> blasons; but<br />

<strong>of</strong> late argent, a saltier sable, and, on a chief gules, three cushions or, as decended oi<br />

the Tribus Alani, <strong>of</strong> which that noble patriot, Thomas Randolph, wr as chief; the<br />

cushion being the paternal figures <strong>of</strong> the Randolphs. The JOHNSTONES were very<br />

numerous, says Hector Boece, in the reign <strong>of</strong> Robert II. Sir John Johnstone <strong>of</strong><br />

that Ilk, upon that king's accession to the crown, defeat a great body <strong>of</strong> the English<br />

invading Scotland, on the West Border and in the ; year 1448, according to<br />

Buchannan, the Maxwells and Johnstones obtained a noble victory over the English,<br />

in the battle at Sark, near Salway. This family was dignified with the title <strong>of</strong><br />

Lord Johnstone by King Charles I. the 2Oth <strong>of</strong> January 1633; and thereafter with<br />

the title <strong>of</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Hartfield, which, by King Charles II. was changed to that <strong>of</strong><br />

Annandale, and <strong>of</strong> late dignified with the title <strong>of</strong> Marquis <strong>of</strong> Annandale. The<br />

Right Honourable William Marquis <strong>of</strong> Annandale, chief <strong>of</strong> this name, carries the<br />

foresaid arms <strong>of</strong> Johnstone, quartered with or, an anchor in pale gules, having married<br />

the heiress <strong>of</strong> FAIRHOLM <strong>of</strong> :<br />

Craigiehall which arms are supported with two<br />

horses argent, furnished gules ; crest, a spur with wings or, and leather gules :<br />

motto, Nunquam non parntus.<br />

Sir GILBERT JOHNSTONE <strong>of</strong> Elphingston in East Lothian, was eldest son by a<br />

nid marriage <strong>of</strong> Sir John Johnstone <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, one <strong>of</strong> the progenitors <strong>of</strong> the<br />

present Marquis <strong>of</strong> Annandale, and his wife Dunbar, daughter to the<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> March, and widow to John Lord Seaton. This Sir Gilbert married Agnes<br />

Elphingston, sole heiress <strong>of</strong> Elphingston <strong>of</strong> that Ilk; wlro, by the assistance <strong>of</strong> his<br />

uterine brother, George Lord Seaton, superior and Over-Lord <strong>of</strong> Elphingston, got
