on the dexter by an Indian, and on the sinister by a negro, in their proper dress,<br />

each bearing on his shoulder a cornucopia, proper, standing on a table <strong>of</strong> com-<br />

partment, whereon are these words, Vis unita Junior, and above all, on an escrol,<br />

order <strong>of</strong> the Company for Colonel Alexander Campbell, <strong>of</strong> Finnab, <strong>of</strong> whom<br />

crescent for difference ; crest, a leopard's head or : motto, Magnum in parvo.<br />

POWR.IE <strong>of</strong> Woodcocksholm, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Linlithgow, argent, a saltier ingfailed<br />

gules, surmounted <strong>of</strong> another or, cantoned with four bugles sable ; crest, a hunt-<br />

Sir MARK. CARSE <strong>of</strong> Fordelcarse, argent, on a saltier vert, betwixt four cross<br />

croslets fitched gules, five crescents <strong>of</strong> the field. But Pont gives to the name <strong>of</strong><br />

Curse, azure, a fesse ingrailed between two mullets in chief, and a crescent in base<br />

within a bordure ingrailed or.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> CURRIE, gules, a saltier with a rose in chief argent. The same<br />

and CURRIE <strong>of</strong> Kelwood carried the same with a<br />

was borne by CURRIE <strong>of</strong> Newby ;<br />

chief sable, as in Font's Manuscript.<br />

CLARKSON, argent, a saltier vert, between two crescents gules in chief and base,<br />

and as many cross croslets fitched sable in the flanks.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> CHRISTIE, or, a saltier cantoned with four mullets sable . The<br />

same is carried by CHRISTIE <strong>of</strong> Craigton ; but the saltier is invected ; crest, a holly<br />

branch withered, with leaves sprouting out anew : motto, Sic viresco. Lyon<br />

PATRICK CHRISTIE, Merchant in Aberdeen, or, a saltier indented betwixt four<br />

mullets sable.<br />

JAMES CHRISTIE <strong>of</strong> Balluchie, or, a saltier ingrailed between four mullets sable .<br />

RIGG <strong>of</strong> Carberry, argent, on a saltier azure, between four mullets, a crescent<br />

I have seen the armorial seal <strong>of</strong> Mr Hugh Rigg <strong>of</strong> Carberry appended to a writ<br />

<strong>of</strong> his, as tutor to Margaret, daughter to George Lord Home, in the year 1546;<br />

upon which was a saltier between three mullets, one in chief, two in the flanks,<br />

and a crescent in base.<br />

Mr THOMAS RIGG <strong>of</strong> Riggsland, descended <strong>of</strong> Carberry, vert, a St Andrew's<br />

Cross ingrailed argent, between a mullet in chief, two garbs in fesse, and three<br />

roses in base or, within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the third, charged with eight crescents <strong>of</strong> the<br />

field ; crest, a cock sable, beaked and armed gules : motto^ Virtute *i3 labore.<br />

GARTHSHORE <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, argent, a saltier between four holly leaves vert; crest, an<br />

eagle displayed, proper : motto, / renew my age. Lyon Register.<br />

Having given before, in this chapter, the armorial bearings <strong>of</strong> the principal<br />

family <strong>of</strong> Bruce, I shall now add the bearings <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the families <strong>of</strong> that<br />

name.<br />

BRUCE <strong>of</strong> Clackmanan, in our latter times, has worn out all brisures and marks<br />

<strong>of</strong> cadency, and carries now the principal bearing, or, a saltier and chiet gules. But<br />
