OF THE SALTIER OR SAUTOIR.<br />
The achievement <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> NITHSDALE, argent, an eagle displayed sable,<br />
beaked and membred gules, surmounted <strong>of</strong> an escutcheon <strong>of</strong> the first, charged with<br />
a saltier <strong>of</strong> the second, and surcharged in the centre with a hurcheon .or ; crest, a<br />
stag, proper, attired argent, couchant before an holly bush, proper ; supporters, two<br />
stags, proper, attired argent ; for motto, Revimco. Of the branches <strong>of</strong> this ancient<br />
and noble family, the eldest and principal one is Maxwell <strong>of</strong> Nether-Pollock, in<br />
the shire <strong>of</strong> Renfrew ; the first <strong>of</strong> which was Sir John, brother to Sir Herbert<br />
Maxwell <strong>of</strong> Carlaverock, in the reign <strong>of</strong> Alexander III. : Of whom is descended<br />
Sir John Maxwell <strong>of</strong> Pollock, possessor and representative <strong>of</strong> that family, who was<br />
honoured with the dignity <strong>of</strong> knight-baronet by King Charles II. the I2th <strong>of</strong><br />
April 1682 ; and in the year 1699, came to be one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College<br />
<strong>of</strong> Justice, and Lord Justice Clerk. He carries for arms, argent, on a saltier sable,<br />
an annulet or, a maternal difference from the House <strong>of</strong> Eglinton ; crest, a stag's<br />
head; with the motto, / am ready ; supporters, two monkeys or apes, proper ; as<br />
in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements. Which supporters I have seen on a seal <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong><br />
his progenitors, lairds <strong>of</strong> Pollock, in the reign <strong>of</strong> Robert III. appended to a charter,<br />
in the custody <strong>of</strong> the present Lord Pollock ; which is an early instance <strong>of</strong> barons<br />
having supporters.<br />
MAXWELL <strong>of</strong> Calderwood is a branch <strong>of</strong> Nether-Pollock ; the first <strong>of</strong> which<br />
House was Robert, second son <strong>of</strong> Sir John Maxwell <strong>of</strong> Pollock, from whom he got<br />
the lands <strong>of</strong> Calderwood, in the year 1401. He married Elizabeth, daughter and<br />
one <strong>of</strong> the co-heirs <strong>of</strong> Sir Robert Denniston <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, and got with her several<br />
lands ; upon which account the family for a long time has been in use to quarter<br />
the arms <strong>of</strong> Denniston with their own, thus, quarterly, first and fourth argent, a<br />
,-altier sable, and a chief paly <strong>of</strong> six pieces <strong>of</strong> the last and first, as in our old books<br />
<strong>of</strong> blazon, so illuminated, in the House <strong>of</strong> Falahall, with other barons, members <strong>of</strong><br />
Parliament, in the year 1604: But, in the Lyon Register,<br />
Alexander Maxwell <strong>of</strong><br />
Calderwood's arms are thus recorded ; quarterly, first and fourth argent, a saltier<br />
sable, within a bordure counter-componed <strong>of</strong> the second and first ; second and<br />
third quartees, argent, a bend azure, for Denniston ; crest, a man's head looking<br />
upright, proper : motto, Think on.<br />
Colonel WILLIAM MAXWELL <strong>of</strong> Cardiness, only son <strong>of</strong> Mr William Maxwell,<br />
\vhose grandfather was William Maxwell <strong>of</strong> Newland, a second son <strong>of</strong> Sir Gavin<br />
Maxwell <strong>of</strong> Calderwood, carries the quartered arms <strong>of</strong> that family as last blazoned,<br />
all within a bordure embattled gules, for his difference ; crest, a man's head looking<br />
foreright, within two laurel branches, disposed orle-ways vert : motto, Think on.<br />

EUSXACHE MAXWELL <strong>of</strong> Teyling in Angus, second son <strong>of</strong> Sir Herbert Maxwell <strong>of</strong><br />
Carlaverock, got the lands <strong>of</strong> Teyling, by marrying Agnes, one <strong>of</strong> the daughters<br />
and co-heirs <strong>of</strong> Sir John GifFord <strong>of</strong> Yester, whose seal and arms had only a saltier,<br />
in the year 1421, as I told before in my Essay <strong>of</strong> the Ancient and Modern Use <strong>of</strong><br />
Arms, page 98. He was the first <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Teyling, who afterwards had a<br />
suitable difference in the Lyon Register since the year 1601.<br />

a falcon looking to the sun, proper : motto,<br />
JOHN MAXWELL <strong>of</strong> Lackiebank, descended <strong>of</strong> the house <strong>of</strong> Teyling, argent,<br />
on a saltier table, between two stars in chief and base azure, a man's heart or ;<br />
crest, a falcon looking to a star : motto, Tendit ad astra. Lyon Register.<br />
Sir ALEXANDER MAXWELL <strong>of</strong> Monreith, Baronet, descended <strong>of</strong> Sir Edward Max-<br />
well, second son <strong>of</strong> Sir Herbert Maxwell <strong>of</strong> Carlaverock, and his Lady ,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> Herbert Herris <strong>of</strong> Tereagles, progenitors <strong>of</strong> the Earls <strong>of</strong> Nithsdale,<br />
arries argent, a double eagle displayed sable, beaked and membred gules, on its<br />
breast an escutcheon <strong>of</strong> the first, charged with a saltier <strong>of</strong> the second, surcharged<br />
in the centre with a hurcheon, or ; all within a bordure gules, with the badge <strong>of</strong><br />
Knight Baronet by way <strong>of</strong> canton, in the dexter chief point ; crest, an eagle ris-<br />
sable, beaked and membred gules: motto, Reviresco. Lyon Register.<br />
JOHN MAXWELL <strong>of</strong> Barucleugh, descended <strong>of</strong> a second brother <strong>of</strong> Kirkonel, who<br />
\\us descended <strong>of</strong> Thomas, a second son <strong>of</strong> Robert, first Lord Maxwell, argent, a<br />
ifr sable, within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the last, charged with eight lozenges <strong>of</strong> the first;
