SIBBALD <strong>of</strong> Balgome, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Fife, argent, a cross moline, square pierced<br />

gutes ; some books give the ITOSS azure. As for the antiquity <strong>of</strong> the name, 1 have<br />

met with it in several charters in the reigns <strong>of</strong> King William and Alexander II. as<br />

in that charter <strong>of</strong> Rogerus .^uincie Comes dc IVit/ion, to St-rus de Seaton, Duneanus<br />

Sibbauld is a witness. And in anno 1246, Donatus Sibbauld is a witness to a charter<br />

by the same Rogerus ^iiincie Earl <strong>of</strong> W niton, or Winchester in England, to Adam<br />

de Si'aton, tie Maritagio ha-rcdis Alam ac lasiae. For more documents <strong>of</strong> the antiquity<br />

<strong>of</strong> the name, see Sir Robert Sibbald's Histoiy <strong>of</strong> the Shire <strong>of</strong> Fife and Kinross,<br />

p. 142. Robert Duke <strong>of</strong> Albany and Earl <strong>of</strong> Fife grants a charter <strong>of</strong> the<br />

lands <strong>of</strong> Kossie, and others, to Sir John Sibbald <strong>of</strong> Balgonie, which appears to<br />

have been the principal family <strong>of</strong> the name. George Douglas Earl <strong>of</strong> Angus<br />

married Elizabeth, daughter to Sir Andrew Sibbald ot : Balgonie and <strong>of</strong> this mar-<br />

riage was born Archibald Earl <strong>of</strong> Angus, father <strong>of</strong> the learned Gavin Douglas<br />

Bishop <strong>of</strong> Dunkeld. Sir Thomas Sibbald <strong>of</strong> Balgonie was principal Treasurer to<br />

King James II. And, in the reign <strong>of</strong> King James IV. Sir Andrew Sibbald <strong>of</strong> Balgome<br />

was Sheriff <strong>of</strong> Fite, having no issue but a daughter, Flelena Sibbald, his<br />

heiress, was married to Robert Ac Lunden, a younger son <strong>of</strong> the Laird <strong>of</strong> Lunden<br />

D| that Ilk, who got with her the estate, and kept the surname <strong>of</strong> Lunden, <strong>of</strong><br />

whom came the Lundens <strong>of</strong> Balgonie, who quartered the arms <strong>of</strong> Sibbald with<br />

their own. SIBBALD <strong>of</strong> Rankeilor, the next family to Balgonie, carried the fore-<br />

said arms within a bordure azure. Andrew Sibbald <strong>of</strong> Rankeilor-Over, had, by<br />

his lady Margaret, daughter to George Learmonth <strong>of</strong> Balcomie, three sons : The<br />

first, James, the lather <strong>of</strong> Sir David Sibbald <strong>of</strong> Rankeilor, in whom this family<br />

ended ; the second son, George, Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine, and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy<br />

abroad, he carried for arms, at gent, a cross moline gules, within a bordure compone<br />

sable and or, the last charged with mascles <strong>of</strong> the second, which were the<br />

figures <strong>of</strong> his mother Leannonth's bearing ; the third son, Mr David Sibbald, was<br />

Keeper <strong>of</strong> the Great Seal under Chancellor Hay,<br />

father to Sir Robert Sibbald <strong>of</strong><br />

Kips, Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine, a learned antiquary, who carried for arms, argent, a<br />

cross molme, within a bordure azure, and a star <strong>of</strong> the last for his difference;<br />

crest, a mort-head proper : motto, Me certum mots crrtafacit. L. R.<br />

Mr PATRICK SIBBALD, Parson <strong>of</strong> St Nicholas Church at Aberdeen, and Rector <strong>of</strong><br />

the Marischal College there, descended <strong>of</strong> a lawful brother <strong>of</strong> Sibbald <strong>of</strong> Kair, who<br />

was a cadet <strong>of</strong> the ancient family <strong>of</strong> Balgonie, argent, a cross moline azure, pierced<br />

in the centre within a bordure cheque <strong>of</strong> the second and first ; crest, a hand erect-<br />

ed, proper : motto, Ora y Inborn. Lyon Register.<br />

The cross moline, as I said before, must be pierced round or square, to distin-<br />

guish it from the cross anchorie ; and it is carried by some representing the Ink <strong>of</strong><br />

tlie Mill, as relative to the name. As by the name <strong>of</strong> Mill and Miller.<br />

ROBERT MYLNE <strong>of</strong> Balfargie, (his arms and descent are thus in the Lyon Register),<br />

his Majesty's Master Mason, nephew and representer <strong>of</strong> the deceast John My hie,<br />
