BALDERSTON <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Linlithgow, argent, a cross sable, with<br />

two cross croslets fitched <strong>of</strong> the last, in the two upper cantons. Balderston and<br />

Bauderston are to be found in the Ragman Roll : Prynne's Collections.<br />

GEORGE BALDERSTON, Apothecary and Chirurgeon in Edinburgh, as descended <strong>of</strong><br />

the same family, carries the foresaid arms, and, for'diiference, charges the cross in<br />

the centre with a mascle or. As in the new Register.<br />

KEIR <strong>of</strong> the Carse, argent, a cross ingrailed sable, between four roses gules.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> RIND, ermine, on a cross gules, a cross croslet fitched or, and in<br />

the sinister quarter argent, two mullets azure : as in Sir George Mackenzie's<br />

Science <strong>of</strong> <strong>Heraldry</strong>.<br />

DUDDINGSTON <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, argent on a cross ingrailed sable, between two cross<br />

The EPISCOPAL SEE <strong>of</strong> DURHAM has for its ensign, azure, a cross or, cantoned<br />

with four lions rampant, argent.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> BUTTER <strong>of</strong> old with us carried argent, a cross potent (or bottony,<br />

as some call it) azure, betwixt four men's hearts gules ; but Butter <strong>of</strong> Gormach<br />

carries now argent, a plain cross sable, between four men's hearts gules ; crest, two<br />

hands issuing out <strong>of</strong> a cloud, drawing an arrow in a bow ; with the motto, Diligit<br />

Deus. In the Lyon Register.<br />

Having spoke before <strong>of</strong> the surname <strong>of</strong> Barclay, which carries cross patees, I<br />

shall here add some more blazons <strong>of</strong> families <strong>of</strong> that name, from our old and modern<br />

books, in which they have reduced the number <strong>of</strong> the ten crosses patee, to<br />

three, as more agreeable to arms in accompanying a cheveron, according<br />

to the-<br />

opinion <strong>of</strong> some heralds, and, for their difference, have altered the tinctures <strong>of</strong> the<br />

field.<br />

BARCLAY <strong>of</strong> Cullerny or Colairnie, an ancient family in 'the shire <strong>of</strong> Fife;<br />

David Barclay <strong>of</strong> Colairnie is one <strong>of</strong> the assessors in a perambulation between<br />

Easter and Wester- Knghorn, 1457, azure, a cheveron or, between three crosses<br />

patee argent : as in Workman and Font's Manuscripts.<br />

BARCLAY <strong>of</strong> Garthie in the year 1421, says Sir James Balfour, carried gules, on<br />

;i cheveron between three crosses patee argent, as many hearts <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

BARCLAY <strong>of</strong> Towie, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Aberdeen, azure, a cheveron or, between two<br />

cross patees in chief, and a lozenge voided in base argent. Balfour's Manuscript.<br />

BARCLAY <strong>of</strong> Mathers or Madders, azure, a cheveron, and in chief three cross<br />

patees argent.<br />

BARCLAY <strong>of</strong> Kippo, azure, a cheveron argent, betwixt two cross patees in chief,<br />

BARCLAY <strong>of</strong> Touch, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Colairnie, azure, a cheveron or,<br />

between three cross patees argent, within a bordure cheque <strong>of</strong> the last and first ;<br />

crest, a cross patee : motto, Crux salutem confert. Lyon Register. And there,<br />

Sir ROBERT BARCLAY <strong>of</strong> Pearston, Baronet, azure, a cheveron betwixt three<br />

cross patees or ; crest, a sword pale-ways, proper ; hiked and pommelled or : motto,<br />

Crux Cbristi nostra corona.<br />

BARCLAY <strong>of</strong> Johnston, decended <strong>of</strong> Barclay <strong>of</strong> Madders, azure, a cheveron between<br />

three cross patees, argent, within a bordure indented <strong>of</strong> the last ; crest, the<br />

^un issuing out <strong>of</strong> a: cloud, proper : motto, Servabit me semper Jehova.<br />

WILLIAM BARCLAY <strong>of</strong> Balmakeuan, second lawful son to David Barclay <strong>of</strong><br />

Johnston, azure, a cheveron ingrailed between three cross patees argent, all within<br />

a bordure indented <strong>of</strong> the last ; crest, a cross patee : motto, Sola cruce salus*<br />

Both matriculated in the Lyon Register.<br />
