same, with a mullet for difference ; and Mr GEORGE SCOTT, sometime Stewart <strong>of</strong><br />

Orkney, another cadet <strong>of</strong> Scotstarvet, carries the arms <strong>of</strong> that* family, quartered<br />

with azure, three boars heads couped, within a bordure indented or, for Gordon <strong>of</strong><br />

Cluny ; crest, a boar's head couped or, holding in his mouth four arrows gules,<br />

feathered and headed argent : motto, Do well and let them say.<br />

WALTER SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Harwood, or, an oak tree vert, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a bend azure,<br />

head erased<br />

charged with a star betwixt two crescents <strong>of</strong> the field ; crest, a stag's<br />

proper : motto, Ardenter amo. Here the tree is assumed as relative to the designation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Harwood, <strong>of</strong> which were several<br />

t^here brothers, as Francis<br />

Scott <strong>of</strong> Greenhill, whose eldest son Robert is a Lieutenant in the Gray Regiment<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dragoons ; and Gideon Scott <strong>of</strong> Falnash, another brother <strong>of</strong> Harvvood, who<br />

carries as Harwood, with their suitable differences. See Harwood's arms in the<br />

Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

JOHN SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Malleny, son and representative <strong>of</strong> Sir William Scott <strong>of</strong> Clerkington,<br />

sometime one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice, the arms <strong>of</strong> Buccleugh ;<br />

and for difference, in base, an arrow bend-ways proper, feathered and barbed<br />

argent ; crest, a stag lodged proper : motto, Amo prohos.<br />

WILLIAM SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Balmouth or, a bend azure between three crescents <strong>of</strong> the<br />

last, within a bordure ingrailed, and quartered gules and argent, crest, a star or :<br />

motto, Lucet.<br />

ADAM SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Hassenden, or, on a bend azure, a star <strong>of</strong> six points between<br />

two crescents argent ; and in base, a bow and arrow <strong>of</strong> the second ; crest, a hand<br />

erect, holding a pole-axe proper : motto, Trusty<br />

FRANCIS SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Gorrenberry, the same with Buccleugh, within a bordure<br />

gobonatedi gules and argent ; crest, an anchor in pale, inwrapt with a cable proper<br />

: motto, Speranditm.<br />

Mr LAURENCE SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Bevelaw, or, on a fess azure, instead <strong>of</strong> a bend, a star<br />

<strong>of</strong> six points between two crescents <strong>of</strong> the field ; crest, a dexter hand holding u<br />

scroll <strong>of</strong> paper.<br />

JAMES SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Vogrie, son <strong>of</strong> Mr Robert Scott, one <strong>of</strong> the clerks <strong>of</strong> tlie chancery,<br />

a younger son <strong>of</strong> Scotstarvet, or, on a bend azure, a star between two crescents<br />

<strong>of</strong> the field, all within a bordure parted per pale, gules and azure, the dex-<br />

ter side ingrailed, and the sinister indented ; crest, a dexter hand holding a ring<br />

proper: motto, Nescit amor fine s.<br />

THOMAS SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Todrick, a second brother <strong>of</strong> Whiteslide or, on a bend azure,<br />

a star between two crescents <strong>of</strong> the field, and in chief, a broken lance gules, with<br />

a crescent for difference ; crest, the head <strong>of</strong> a lance proper : motto, Pro aris<br />

'^ focis.<br />

Mr GEORGE SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Bunraw, representative <strong>of</strong> the fairjily <strong>of</strong> Sinton, or, two<br />

mullets in chief, and a crescent in base azure ; crest, a nymph, in her dexter<br />

hand the sun, and in her sinister the moon, all proper : motto, Reparabit cornua<br />

Pbcebe.<br />

WILLIAM SCOTT, a second son to the deceast Mr Laurence Scott <strong>of</strong> Bevelaw, or,<br />

on a fesse azure, a star <strong>of</strong> six rays between two crescents <strong>of</strong> the field, all within a<br />

bordure componed <strong>of</strong> the second and first ; crest, a star <strong>of</strong> six points proper :<br />

motto, Potior origine virtus.<br />

<strong>of</strong> the field, within a bordure ingrailed gulss-, and a mullet for difference ; crest,<br />

;i dexter hand erected, holding an annulet, and therein a carbuncle, proper :<br />

motto, In tenebris lux. He was a second son <strong>of</strong> Scott <strong>of</strong> Tarvet.<br />

Mr JAMES SCOTT, SherifF-Clerk <strong>of</strong> the shire <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh^ descended <strong>of</strong> the<br />

liunily <strong>of</strong> Scott <strong>of</strong> Knightspottie, or, on a bend azure, a star betwixt two crescuts<br />

<strong>of</strong> the first, all within a bordure ingrailed gules, charged with eight besants ;<br />

(rest, an arm and hand holding a book half opened, proper : motto, Fidelitas.<br />

Having given the blazons <strong>of</strong> such families <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Scott, descended <strong>of</strong><br />

Buccleugh, as are recorded in the Lyon Register, I shall here add another recorded<br />

there, <strong>of</strong> a family <strong>of</strong> that name in Holland, also descended <strong>of</strong> Buccleugh, viz.<br />

Mr JAMES SCOTT, eldest son to Apollonius Scott, Judge, and afterwards President<br />

<strong>of</strong> the High Court <strong>of</strong> Justice at the Hague, lawful son <strong>of</strong> James Scott, who hav-
