Mr JAMES GRAHAM, Advocate and Solicitor to King James VII. a fourth son <strong>of</strong><br />
Patrick Graham <strong>of</strong> Inchbrakie, descended, as before said, <strong>of</strong> the eldest son <strong>of</strong> a.<br />
second marriage <strong>of</strong> the first Earl <strong>of</strong> Montrose, carries or, three roses 2 and i gules,<br />
and on a chief sable, as many escalops <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a hand issuing out <strong>of</strong> a<br />
cloud, reaching to a garland, all proper : motto, Numen & omnia. L. R.<br />
Sir WILLIAM GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Braco, Baronet, descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong> John first<br />
Earl <strong>of</strong> Montrose, carries the quartered arms <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Montrose ; but, for his<br />
difference, iru; rails the chief; crest, two hands issuing out <strong>of</strong> a cloud, in each a<br />
sword, the right hand flourishing al<strong>of</strong>t, the left holding it in a defensive posture :<br />

Colonel HENRY GRAHAM, whose grandfather was William Graham <strong>of</strong> Killearn,<br />
lawful brother-german to John Earl <strong>of</strong> Montrose, Viceroy and Commissioner to<br />
the Kingdom <strong>of</strong> Scotland, from King James VI. carries the quartered arms <strong>of</strong><br />
Mcntrose, within a borclure quartered g ules and sable, supported by a falcon, pro-<br />
per, on the dexter, and by a stork on the sinister; and for crest, a falcon, proper ;<br />
with the motto, Prcedte metnor. L. R. *<br />
ROBERT GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Newark, sometime Provost <strong>of</strong> Dumfries, or, a bear's head<br />
erased sable , and, on a chief <strong>of</strong> the same, three escalops <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a pelican's<br />
head couped, proper.<br />

J OHX GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Dougalston, or, a heron volant, proper, and on a chief sable,<br />
three escalops <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, an escalop as the former : motto, Pignut amoris.<br />

Mr JOHN MITCHELSON <strong>of</strong> Middleton, Advocate, argent, a demi-lion rampant<br />
nalssant out <strong>of</strong> the base gules, armed and langued azure, and, on a chief indented<br />
scihh', a star betwixt two crescents <strong>of</strong> the first ; on a wreath <strong>of</strong> the tinctures, for<br />
crest, an increscent argent; with the motto, Crescam ut prosim, so illuminated in<br />
Workman's Manuscript ; see Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements. This family is <strong>of</strong> .a good<br />
old standing in Mid-Lothian, being heritors <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Mitchelston, Luggat,<br />
and Blackhaugh, for some generations past, and were designed <strong>of</strong> Mitchelston, be-<br />
fore they purchased the lands <strong>of</strong> Middleton, about an hundred and fifteen years<br />
since, and have from that time been designed <strong>of</strong> Middleton ; <strong>of</strong> which family the<br />
above Mr John Mitchelson is lineally descended, and representative.<br />
The surname <strong>of</strong> SIMPSON, argent, on a chief vert, three crescents <strong>of</strong> the first, by<br />
George Simpson <strong>of</strong> Udoch, who has for crest, a falcon volant, proper : motto, Alis<br />
nutriot: N. R.<br />
HOWISON, argent, a man's heart gules, on a chief azure, three flower-de-luces or.<br />

I shall add here, for examples <strong>of</strong> a chief charged, some honourable families in<br />
England, from Mr Dale, pursuivant, his Catalogue <strong>of</strong> the Nobility <strong>of</strong> England,<br />
and from Jacob Imh<strong>of</strong>f 's Historia Regtim pariumque Magna Britannia.<br />
RUSSEL Duke <strong>of</strong> BEDFORD, argent, a lion rampant gules, on a chief sable, three<br />
