OF THE CHIEF OR CHEF.<br />
Marquis <strong>of</strong> Huntly, the only son <strong>of</strong> which marriage is William. Secondly, he<br />
married Janet Paterson, a daughter <strong>of</strong> the Laird <strong>of</strong> Denmuir, and has with her<br />
issue. This account is taken from the genealogical tree <strong>of</strong> this knightly family,<br />
who have been in use, on their paintings and carvings, to adorn their above arms<br />
with the crest, motto, and supporters <strong>of</strong> the Marquis, now Duke <strong>of</strong> Douglas, <strong>of</strong><br />
which before.<br />
DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Cavers, descended <strong>of</strong> a son <strong>of</strong> James Earl <strong>of</strong> Douglas and Marr, and<br />
brother to Sir William, the first <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Queensberry, carries the paternal<br />
coat <strong>of</strong> Douglas, within a bordure gules; crest, a dexter hand holding a broken<br />
lance bend-ways, proper : with the motto, Do or die. So matriculated in the Lyon<br />
Office.<br />
DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Whittinghame was descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong> James Lord Dalkeith,<br />
and his lady, a daughter <strong>of</strong> the Lord Borthwick. He carried ermine, on a<br />
chief gules, two stars argent, as in Esplin's and Pont's Books <strong>of</strong> Blazons ; but Mr<br />
Thomas Crawfurd, in his Manuscript, says, he placed in base a cinquefoil sable,<br />
being his maternal figure<br />
for Borthwick.<br />
DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Bonjedward carries only the paternal coat <strong>of</strong> the name, and, for difference,<br />
in the collar point, a label <strong>of</strong> three points gules; as on the paintings <strong>of</strong> the<br />
genealogical tree <strong>of</strong> the house <strong>of</strong> Douglas, which makes the first <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong><br />
Bonjedward to have been William Douglas, a third son <strong>of</strong> William Earl <strong>of</strong> Angus,<br />
and brother <strong>of</strong> George Earl <strong>of</strong> Angus, who married the daughter <strong>of</strong> Sibbald <strong>of</strong> Balgonie,<br />
sometime Thesaurer <strong>of</strong> Scotland.<br />
Mr WALTER DOUGLAS, minister at Linton, and third son <strong>of</strong> George Douglas <strong>of</strong><br />
Bonjedward, carries the above arms within a bordure ingrailed gules; crest, a. hand<br />
holding a scimiter : motto, Honor & amor, as in the Plates <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Kilspindy was a third son <strong>of</strong> Archibald Earl <strong>of</strong> Angus, and a younger<br />
brother to Glenbervie. He was Provost <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh in the reign <strong>of</strong> King James<br />
V. and carried only the paternal coat <strong>of</strong> Douglas, with a mullet for difference, as<br />
I have observed.<br />
DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> M<strong>of</strong>fat carried the same, but without the crescent.<br />
DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Pittendreich, ermine, a hart gules, ensigned with an open crown or,<br />
on a chief azure, three stars argent.<br />
I shall add some other blazons <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Douglas, as they are matriculated<br />
in the Lyon Register.<br />
ROBERT DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Bridgeford, grand-child <strong>of</strong> a third son <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Angus,<br />
bears as the Marquis, now Duke <strong>of</strong> Douglas, quarterly, within a bordure indented<br />
or; and for crest, a dexter hand grasping a sword, erected ardua virtus.<br />

JAMES DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Bads, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Dalkeith, argent, a man's<br />
heart with a dart piercing the same fesse-ways gules, on a chief azure, three mul-<br />
lets <strong>of</strong> the field : motto, Sapientia y veritas.<br />
ROBERT DOUGLAS, sometime Bailie <strong>of</strong> Musselburgh, argent, a heart crowned<br />
gules, betwixt three mullets azure.<br />
JOHN DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Inchmarle, descended <strong>of</strong> Morton, the same as that Earl within<br />
a bordure counter-componed, or and sable; erest, a dexter hand appearing out<br />
<strong>of</strong> a bush, holding an oak leaf, proper : motto, Tandem Jit surculus arbor.<br />
JOHN DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Mains, argent, a fesse cheque gules, and <strong>of</strong> the first, between<br />
three stars in chief azure, and a man's heart in base, proper ; crest, an oak tree<br />
proper, with a lock hanging upon one <strong>of</strong> the branches : motto, ^uae serata<br />
stcura.<br />
ARCHIBALD DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Cliftonhall, frmine, on a chief azure, three stars argent,<br />
a bordure gules; crest, a hand holding a man's heart proper, ensigned with a cres-<br />
cent : argent motto, Meliora speranda.<br />
ROBERT DOUGLAS, Esquire, only son to the deceased Sir Robert Douglas <strong>of</strong> Tiliiquhally,<br />
quarterly, first, the paternal coat <strong>of</strong> Douglas ; second, Douglas <strong>of</strong> Lochleven<br />
; third, argent, three mascles sable on a chief <strong>of</strong> the , last, as many lions pas-<br />
sant gardan* <strong>of</strong> the first, for the name <strong>of</strong> Ogstoun ; crest, a dexter hand issuing<br />
out <strong>of</strong> a cloud, holding a sword erect, proper : motto, God for us.<br />
