tield, by whom he had James Earl <strong>of</strong> Morton, his successor, who died a bachelor,<br />
and is succeeded by Robert, present Earl <strong>of</strong> Morton, his brother-german.<br />
The achievements <strong>of</strong> the Earls <strong>of</strong> Morton are quarterly, first and fourth Douglas<br />
as before. ; second and third argent, three piles issuing from a chief gules., on the<br />
last two stars <strong>of</strong> the first, for the Douglases <strong>of</strong> Dalkeith, who carried a chief gules,<br />
w ith<br />
and the Douglases <strong>of</strong> Lochleven, who carried the three piles in chief, charged<br />
two stars but since these two families were united in the house <strong>of</strong> Morton, ; they<br />
join the chief and piles together : The Earl <strong>of</strong> Morton's crest is a tanglier, proper,<br />
-ticking between two clefts <strong>of</strong> an oak-tree, with a chain and lock holding them to-<br />
: gether motto, Luck sicker ; supporters, two savages, proper, wreathed about the<br />
head and middle with oak-leaves vert, as in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements <strong>of</strong> the No-<br />
bility.<br />
DOUGLAS Duke <strong>of</strong> .QUEENSBERRY, Marquis <strong>of</strong> Dumfries-shire, Earl <strong>of</strong> Drumlanrig,<br />
Viscount <strong>of</strong> Nith, and Lord Douglas <strong>of</strong> Kinmount, quarterly, first and fourth<br />
argent, a man's heart gules, ensigned with an imperial crown, proper, on a chief<br />
azure, three stars <strong>of</strong> the first, for Douglas ; second and third azure , a bend betwixt<br />
six cross croslets fitched or, for the title <strong>of</strong> Marr, all within a bordure or, charged<br />
with a double tressure gule s ; crest, a man's heart proper, winged and ensigned with<br />
an imperial crown or; supporters, two pegasuses argent, winged or: with the motto,<br />
Forward.<br />
The first <strong>of</strong> this family was Sir William Douglas, son <strong>of</strong> James second Earl <strong>of</strong><br />
Marr ; 'who got from his father the lands <strong>of</strong> Drumlanrig, Hawick, and Selkirk,<br />
v/hich were afterwards confirmed by King James I. to the family. Of him was li-<br />
neally descended Sir William, the tenth laird <strong>of</strong> Drumlanrig, who was created a<br />
Lord <strong>of</strong> Parliament, and honoured with the title <strong>of</strong> Viscount <strong>of</strong> Drumlafirig, anno<br />
1630 ; and, in the year 1633, was advanced by King Charles I. to the dignity <strong>of</strong><br />
Queensberry : His grandson William, third Earl <strong>of</strong> Queensberry, was, by King<br />
Charles II. dignified with the title <strong>of</strong> Marquis, and soon after with the title <strong>of</strong> Duke<br />
<strong>of</strong> Queensberry. He had issue by his lady Isabel, daughter to William Marquis<br />
<strong>of</strong> Douglas, James, who succeeded him, and William, the first Earl <strong>of</strong> March.<br />
WILLIAM DOUGLAS Earl <strong>of</strong> MARCH, Viscount <strong>of</strong> Peebles, Lord Douglas <strong>of</strong> Neid-<br />
nath, Lynn, and Mannor : His achievement quarterly, first and fourth as Queens-<br />
berry ; second and third gules, a lion rampant urgent, within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the last,<br />
charged with eight roses <strong>of</strong> the first, for the title <strong>of</strong> March ; supported on the sinister<br />

by a lion gules, and on the dexter, by one <strong>of</strong> the supporters <strong>of</strong> Queensberry ;<br />
with his crest and motto as above.<br />
Sir JAMES DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Kellhead, Baronet, descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong> William<br />
first Earl <strong>of</strong> Qucensberry, and his lady Isabel Ker, daughter to the Lord Newbattle,<br />
afterwards Earl <strong>of</strong> Lothian, and now Marquis <strong>of</strong> Lothian, carries the quartered<br />
arms <strong>of</strong> Queensberry within a bordure ingrailed gules, charged with eight be-<br />
zants or ; crest, a man's heart proper, powdered with besants, crowned and winged<br />
or: motto, Forward. N. R.<br />
DOUGLAS Lord CARLYLE, first and fourth argent, a cross flory gules, for Carlyle ;<br />
>econd and third gules, a cross or, for Corsby ; over all, by way <strong>of</strong> surtout, the paternal<br />
coat <strong>of</strong> Douglas ; crest, t\vo dragons' heads and necks in pale addossc azure;<br />
supporters, two peacocks, proper : motto, Humilitate. The first <strong>of</strong> this family was<br />
George Douglas, natural son to Sir George Douglas <strong>of</strong> Pittendrich, who married<br />
Elizabeth, daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> James Douglas <strong>of</strong> Parkhead, and with her had two<br />
-ons, first, Sir JAMES DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Torthorald, his son and heir.<br />
Second, Sir GEORGE DOUGLAS <strong>of</strong> Mordington, <strong>of</strong> whose armorial bearing I have<br />
seen no vestige or memorial.<br />
Sir James was succeeded by his son Sir James, who, marrying Elizabeth, grandchild<br />
and heir <strong>of</strong> Michael Lord Carlyle, was, in her right, Lord Carlyle <strong>of</strong> Tortho<strong>of</strong><br />

,ald ; their son, James Lord Carlyle, married Elizabeth Gordon, daughter<br />
John Gordon <strong>of</strong> Lochinvar, but having no issue, he resigned his honours to William<br />
tirst Earl <strong>of</strong> Queensberry, in the year 1638, who had acquired his estate ; and<br />
thereby the title became extinct in this family.<br />
