NEW BUILDING ADDITION
On January 25, 1958, the people of Wethersfield voted $200, 000 in bonds to construct a new addition to our
school building. The addition included more classroom space than the original building, which gave us eleven
classrooms, industrial arts, shop, band room, library, study hall, administrative and faculty unit, and rest rooms.
The remodeling also included additional room in the Science Department.
The students and faculty are very happy with the new addition, and wish to thank the taxpayers of the community
for making it possible.

DEDICATION
We the members of the Green Quill staff, dedicate this, the
1959 edition of the Green Quill, to Kay Keime. Kay, a member
of the class of '59, passed away April 3, 1958 at Iowa City, Iowa.
"Though her life ended abruptly and the time she spent with us
was much too short, she will long be remembered in the hearts of
her friends and classmates."

Jurgen adjusted well to
American school life.
FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT
Jurgen Richard Wolfgang Lenz was the foreign exchange student sent to Wethersfield High
School from Karlsruhe, Germany by the American Field Service for the 1958-59 school year.
Jurgen was 17 years old, and the second youngest of his two brothers and sister. He arrived in
Kewanee on June 25, and will leave America at the end of this July.
It didn't take Jurgen long to adjust to the "American way of life. " He was active in several
extra-curricular activities, including Pep Club, Band, F. T.A., vice-president of his class, and
Student Council.
He made a big hit with the WHS girls because he was such a "smooth" dancer.
This is the second year our school has sponsored a foreign exchange student. Last year Jaime
Nieto of Madrid, Spain was with us. We've enjoyed having both these boys, and hope they've
enjoyed their stay in the United States.

STUDENT COUNCIL
This past year the Student Council has had Jurgen
Lenz as our foreign exchange student from Germany.
We have enjoyed having him and we hope that he
has enjoyed being here in our school.
Our Homecoming last fall was a big success. It
included a pep rally, parade, game, and dance. Pat
Druin was crowned Homecoming Queen.
Members of our Student Council attended both the
District Convention at East Moline and the State Convention
at Chicago.
For fund raising projects we sponsored social hours
and the candy machine. Paid assemblies were planned
throughout the school year for the student body.
We planned Student Government Day with a Faculty
Tea in the afternoon.
Our sponsors were Miss Allene Whitmeyer and Mr. Bryce
Miller. Our officers were: President, Bill Vancil; Vice-
President, Steve Mooney; Secretary-Treasurer, John Culver;
and Reporter, Lois Palmer.

CONCERT BAND
The sixty-four piece Concert Band has had a most successful
year. The new band room was completed in October,
and rehearsals started the first of November. This
room, with its near perfect accoustics, has provided the
band with a beautiful home of its own. Patrons of the
Wethersfield Schools can be justly proud of the provisions
they have furnished for the Music Department. This new
room has helped the quality and musicianship of each
music organization to improve over a hundred per cent.
The Concert Band was host for the Blackhawk Conference
Band Festival, participated in the Illinois High School
Association Music Contests, presented a concert for P. T.A.
and gave its annual Spring Formal Concert in May. Nineteen
hundred fifty-nine marks the tenth year for Mr. Bickhaus
as band director of the Wethersfield Concert Band. The
number of students participating in band has grown from
twenty-seven in 1949 to one hundred sixty-eight in 1959.

MARCHING BAND
The Wethersfield High School Marching Band is
a forty-eight piece playing unit featuring a sevenman
color guard up front. The drum majorette was
Ann Pask('59) and drill instructor for the color guard
was Mr. Fred Andrew.
The marching band performed at all home football
games and participated in the annual homecoming
parade. It also participated in the massed band
festival at Galesburg in the spring of the year, and
also in the Western State University homecoming at
Macomb in the fall of the year.

COLOR GUARD

GIRLS CHOIR
The Girls Choir rehearses three days a week, and onehalf
credit is given to each member for one year's work.
The activities of the choir include: a concert for F. T.A.;
a program for the Woman's Club; participation in the Annual
Blackhawk Conference Vocal Festival; and a concert in the
spring, usually combined with the high school band.
Each year the choir enters the Illinois High School Association
Music Contests. The Girls Choir has the distinction
of bringing to Wethersfield its first State Championship Trophy.
The general musicianship, and poise of this group makes it a
truly outstanding organization.
Mrs. Franklin Coplan is the accompanist, and Mr. Charles
Bickhaus is the director. Officers are : Barbara Eshelman, President;

TRI-HI -Y
The Tri-Hi-Y started the new year by welcoming
in the new members with a Splash Party and pot luck
supper. With such a good start, we combined with the
G.A.A. to build a float for the Homecoming parade.
We had'a clever float but did not win a prize.
Our Christmas project was selling Christmas trees
at the Y. For the Christmas community project we
gave food to a needy family. We had a concession
stand at one of the basketball games to earn money
for the Midwinter Formal, which we sponsored. We
also made favors for the hospital to use on Valentine's
Day.
The new members were officially initiated in January.
Tri-Hi-Y had a very good year, thanks to the
cooperation of the members and Miss Hutson, our sponsor.

PEP CLUB
This year's Pep Club started off with more determination
than ever to promote better school spirit and
sportsmanship.
Some of the year's highlights included a white shirt
cheering section, which did intricate card cheers. As
a money-making project, the Pep Club sold school sweatshirts
and beanies. For the first time a constitution was
drawn up by the officers stating the definite rules and regulations
of our organization.
Our advisors were Mr. Paul Miller and Mr. Howard

FHA monthly meetings have been centered around
the theme of safety this year.
"Families Together" projects of the Wethersfield
Chapter have been having a Daddy-Date Night and a
Mother-Daughter Banquet. During the FHA Week in
March the in-coming Freshmen were initiated in a
formal ceremony. The first week of school was Rosebud
and Blossom Week, in which the Freshmen were
introduced and welcomed into the Chapter.
Entertaining done has included the Honor Roll Receptions
held every six weeks, coffees for Unit Faculty
meetings, and refreshments for parents on Visitation
Day during National Education Week.
At Christmas the FHA was very active in making
dolls and stuffed toys to be distributed to children who
wouldn't otherwise have a Christmas.

The Future Farmers of America were very active
this year under the supervision of our instructor, Mr.
Perry. The activities were: selling fireplace logs,
picking up corn, and selling concrete hog troughs.
Some of the more enjoyable activities were the Father
and Son Banquet and the all-school dance.
This year our FFA Chapter was represented at
many FFA judging contests. We also showed livestock
at the FFA Fair and took in our fair share of
the premiums. In October the FFA officers attended
the Officers Training School and Banquet, which was
held at LaMoilie High School. The officers brought
back many good ideas to make the Wethersfield FFA
a better chapter.
Some of the trips taken this year included the
Illinois State FFA Convention, and the National FFA
Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. A trip to the
International Harvester Plant in Rock Island was also
very interesting and educational.

The 1958-59 Myrtle B. Nelson Chapter of Future
Teachers was one of the largest in its history. The
year's programs were of special interest to every one
of the fifty-four members.
Some of the program highlights were talks given
by Wethersfield teachers and panel discussions led by
the students. The high school principal, Mr. Bryce
Miller, gave the club a different viewpoint on high
school administration. Mrs. Soderlund, of the Blish
Building, gave an informative talk on Special Education.
At the Christmas season Miss Myrtle Nelson
gave an enjoyable "Hour of Music. " A talk by Jurgen
Lenz, the exchange student from Germany, was
another program of special interest.
The success of the club was due mostly to the
help of the advisors. Miss Allene Whitmyer and Miss

TRACK SQUAD
The Wethersfield Flying Geese last year had a young
and inexperienced team, but they built up their team
for the 1959 season. In the Blackhawk Conference meet,
the Geese placed fourth. In the regular season the squad
ended up with a 3 and 3 record.
Gary Geirnaeirt was the leading scorer of the Flying
Geese. Gary, only a sophomore, also took first place
in the 440 yard dash in the Blackhawk Conference meet.
Kirby Knutson was another good scorer for the Geese.
He jumped better than 21 feet in the broad jump.
This year the Geese will have a team which consists
mostly of seniors. The Geese should have more experience
and a better uack season this year.

BASEBALL CHAMPS
For the last three years, the Geese have succeeded in bringing the Blackhawk Conference
trophy in baseball back to W, H. S. The Geese defeated the Wyoming Indians for the second
straight year and gained the title. In order for the Geese to play Wyoming for the Champion-
ship, they had to defeat Bradford, Walnut, and Galva, which they did to gain the title of
their division.
In the championship game, the Flying Geese defeated the Indians by a score of 8 to 2.
Gordon VanWaes was the winning pitcher of the game, with a very good pitching record of 6
wins and 0 losses; his brother, Dick, had a 3 and 3 record. In the title game, the big hitters
for the Geese were Mickey Lind and Dick VanWaes, each collecting 2 hits.

SENIOR CLASS PLAY
On Friday, November 21, the Senior Class presented a three-act play entitled, "Seventeenth
Summer," a tense, yet tender story of youth and first love. The plot centered around Angie Mor-
row, a charming sensitive girl of seventeen and Jack Duluth, a tall good-looking boy of eighteen,
and the events which made that "Seventeenth Summer" a most unforgettable one.
