Who is LOWA?
Take a walk, a hike, even a climb across the mountainous
regions of Europe: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, all the places
where strong, durable boots are a necessity, and you’ll find
LOWA Boots standing at the top, the leading hiking and mountaineering
boot brand on the continent. In fact, we sell annually
approximately 3.45 million pairs of boots worldwide.
Not only is our Trekker the number one selling boot on the
European continent, but pick up any of the five leading styles of
women’s boots in Europe and you’ll find the name LOWA
proudly stitched on the side. But things weren’t always this way.
Our beginnings were humble ones. Three quarters of a century
ago, we were unassuming Bavarian cobblers; craftsman plying
a trade in the small town of Jetzendorf, Germany.
Sure we’ve grown. But we haven’t lost sight of what carried
us to the top: genuine craftsmanship, first-rate components, the
best leathers and uncompromising attention to detail and fit.
Who is LOWA?

A Little Background on LOWA
• LOWA has been making boots since 1923. That’s 80 years of
boot building. Compare that to most US companies who have
been outsourcing boots for 30 years, and draw your own
conclusions.
• Our corporate offices and primary factory are located in
Jetzendorf, Germany, in the heart of Bavaria. And yes, we
like to make comparisons with the famous automaker from
the same area. Like them, we are famous for uncompromising
quality, product innovation and attention to detail…
which in turn, translates to the “ultimate” in comfort,
performance and durability.
• The LOWA DIFFERENCE: We design our own boots, and we
make our own boots - and we do it in Europe.
• As you flip through this book, notice all the patented features
that we build into our boots. The C4 tongue, Asymmetric
Walking Position and our patented GORE-TEX ® construction
are tangible examples of our many years of hard work and
dedication.
A Little Background on LOWA

Hand Crafted (400 Hands to be Exact)
The first step each LOWA boot
takes begins with our dedicated
designers and craftspeople.
• LOWA boots are designed in
Jetzendorf by our research
and development team.
• This same team is also
responsible for testing
durability, materials and
waterproofing.
• 200 pairs of hands touch each boot during the manufacturing
process.
• LOWA’s goal is to design boots with a superior fit and
greater comfort so your customers will experience:
• Better fit
• Easier & shorter break-in time
• Better performance
• More comfort and enjoyment
A Little Background on LOWA

The Perfect Fit
The ultimate result in perfect boot-fitting is to increase customer
satisfaction, to make you and your shop look professional, and to
keep people coming back.
LOWA is a proud sponsor of the Phil Oren FitSystem which
teaches retailers how to correctly fit a boot to an individual foot.
If you ever have a chance to attend a FitSystem Seminar, you
should jump at the opportunity.
Five general steps to keep in mind are:
1. Perform a visual assessment of the foot - i.e. high or
low volume, width.
2. Measure the foot correctly - be sure to use a Brannock
device.
3. Check for a snug heel and correct width. Does the
boot break correctly at the ball of the foot?
4. Check for a correct fitting sock and if the boot is
laced properly.
5. Decide if the customer needs an after-market footbed.
For more information on boot-fitting, contact Phil Oren at
www.fitsystembyphiloren.com or HC30 Box 911, Prescott, AZ
The Perfect Fit

Lacing Techniques
Narrow feet: Use the eyelets farthest from the tongue
of the shoes. It will bring up the side of the shoe.
Wide feet: Use the eyelets closest to the tongue of the
shoe. This technique gives the foot more space.
Heel problems: Use every eyelet, making sure that the
area closest to the heel is tied tightly while less tension
is used near the toes. When you have reached the next
to last eyelet on each side, thread the lace through the
top eyelet, making a small loop. Then, thread the
opposite lace through each loop before tying.
Narrow heel and wide forefoot: Use two laces.
Thread through the top half of the the eyelets and the
other lace through the bottom half of the eyelets. The
lace closest to the heel (top eyelets) should be tied
more tightly than the other lace closest to the toes
(bottom eyelets).
The Perfect Fit

The Guts of a LOWA Boot
To make a great boot, you gotta have guts.
LOWA has the guts to be the market leader. Our boots use the
highest grade of leather, combined with features that add up to
the perfect balance of comfort, fit, performance and durability.
• C4 tongue
• The AWP
• Climate Control System
• Glove leather lining
• Lacing systems
• Shanking & stabilizer system
• Lasts and fit
• Outsoles
• GORE-TEX ® and Dri-Lex ®
The Guts of a LOWA Boot
LOWA Tanark

Patented C4 Tongue
The C4 tongue is designed to work with the way the foot naturally
moves when walking. This design provides enhanced
comfort and performance, and improves the flex and ankle control
while reducing break-in time.
C4 comfort details:
• Anatomically contoured padding, thicker on the outer
side of the foot
• Recessed ankle section, higher on the inner side
• Forward bellows insert on inner side of the foot
• The top of the tongue has additional soft padding for
extra comfort
BENEFIT: A natural flex that cradles the foot in comfort.
The Guts of a LOWA Boot

The AWP
(Asymmetric Walking Position)
The patented AWP corresponds to the
anatomic contours of the leg’s position and
shape. The ankle section of the men's boot is
set at a two degree lateral (outside) canting to
provide a more balanced stance, especially
with the use of custom footbeds.
• The shaft rim is raised on the medial side (inside) of the boot
to deliver improved support.
• Asymmetric C4 Tongue helps reduce the break-in time of the
boot in the ankle area.
• The two degree canting helps prevent over-pronation.
BENEFIT: Provides a more balanced stance, which can mean
the difference between stamina and fatigue on the trail. It also
offers an easier overall break-in period.
The Guts of a LOWA Boot

Climate Control System
Simply put, moisture in a boot is a bad
thing. Sweaty feet lead to blisters and
discomfort. The LOWA Climate
Control System helps alleviate
that problem.
Take a look inside a leather-lined
LOWA boot:
• The main feature of this system involves a series of
perforations or holes that are inside the boot cuff’s lining.
These holes allow air to enter the boot lining while the
natural walking movement “pumps” heat and moisture
out through the holes, keeping the interior of the boot dry.
• An innovative foot bed provides moisture management
around the bottom of the foot. The moisture from the bottom
of the foot is pulled down and away, and evaporates during
the “pumping” walking action.
• A minimum of adhesives are used, allowing the lining to
“breathe.”
BENEFIT: Dry feet are less likely to develop blisters and hot
spots.
The Guts of a LOWA Boot

Glove Leather Lining - It Feels Better
Very few boot companies include glove leather linings in
their products. LOWA does. It’s just one more benefit that
enhances the quality of our footwear.
• Leather lining cradles the heel and foot area, and conforms to
the shape of your foot (like a leather glove!)
• Leather is nature’s original moisture management and climate
regulator. Leather lining, like any “skin,” needs to be
occasionally cleaned and moisturized.
BENEFIT: Glove leather lining will conform and contour to the
shape of the foot providing increased comfort and a custom fit.
Kibo
The Guts of a LOWA Boot
"Your foot knows something is different the
instant it slides into the Kibo. A velvety-soft,
all-leather lining awaits to welcome it, to
cradle it like a baby in a blanket."
- Outside Buyer's Guide 2001

LOWA Lacing Systems
LOWA uses a variety of lacing hardware and lacing systems to
provide a secure fit.
• High quality laces with nylon cores
• Delrin plastic rings on selected styles of Light
Hiking footwear provide lightweight and one
pull security.
• Smooth rustproof independent eyelets
Lace Loop System:
Laces are fed through sewn-in
cord loops, for evenly distributed
lace tension.
Metal Lacing Eyelets:
Durable lightweight metal
eyelets for secure lacing and
even pressure distribution.
Flexible D-Ring Loops:
Nirosta steel loops with flexible
construction ensure that
laces lie flat and snug against
boot.
BENEFIT: Provides ease and security of lacing while adding to
the precise fit of the boot.
The Guts of a LOWA Boot

Shanking and Stabilizer System
LOWA uses a variety of shanking systems which are appropriate
for the end use of each boot and footwear.
• Shanks are sandwiched between the the upper and the midsole.
• They provide torsional and lateral support to the sole package
of the boot.
• LOWA uses nylon shanks in our Mountaineering, Backpacking,
Trekking and Hiking Boots. (Nylon does not conduct cold like
steel shanks)
• Thickness of the shank is proportionally varied to the function,
end use and size of each boot i.e. Mountaineering boots have
a rigid shank for crampon use, Hiking and Trekking boots have
a more flexible shank for walking comfort.
• Light Hiking, XTR and Casual shoes use a different, more
flexible, and lighter weight nylon “stabilizer.” The stabilizer is
put in the midsole during the PU injection process.
BENEFIT: Shanks provide improved ankle stability and
torsional control under foot.
The Guts of a LOWA Boot
Stabilizer System

The LOWA Last
LOWA’s worldwide reputation for superior fit begins with the
LOWA LAST. The last determines the inner shape of the boot
and is the major component in determining the fit. LOWA lasts
are precisely designed according to anatomical data that has
been combined over many years of research. The last, in combination
with the upper pattern, determines the boot’s final fit.
You can’t really see it, but you certainly can feel it!
• The LOWA last generally features a narrow heel pocket and
is wider at the ball of the foot.
• LOWA uses pieced leather in the uppers to provide a more
precise fit that snugs over the instep and ball of the foot.
• LOWA uses different lasts for men and women.
• LOWA boots generally fit a half size larger than your true size.
The Guts of a LOWA Boot

The LOWA Last
Each style has its own unique fit as upper patterns and
materials are all different.
• While LOWA is known for its great fit, we know it may not
meet the needs of every customer. Therefore, we offer true
wide and narrow widths in the following boots: Scout II,
Trekker, Lady Sport and Tanark.
• Note the following sizing designations on the boots:
S corresponds to Narrow
M corresponds to Medium (this is a “standard
width” and may not have any designation)
W corresponds to Wide
WXL corresponds to those boots who have a larger
volume in the toe/ball area
The Guts of a LOWA Boot

Men’s and Women’s Feet are Not the Same
Ask your female customers how their feet
feel once they’ve slipped into a LOWA.
Chances are, they’re going to tell you they
love it. Don’t be surprised. LOWA’s
Women’s boots are known for their outstanding
fit. This is accomplished through
specially designed lasts just for women
because women typically have:
• Narrow heels, yet often wide at the ball
of the foot
• Higher arches which cause sensitive
areas at the top of the instep
• Lower calves and Achilles tendons
• Less padding than men’s feet
LOWA women’s lasts feature a narrower heel and higher arch,
and are designed to more comfortably fit the shape of the
female foot.
The Guts of a LOWA Boot

LOWA’s Women’s Boot Features
• Out-of-box comfort
• C4 padded tongue
• Flexible soles for easier walking and hiking
• Female-specific lasts which are narrower in the heel and
higher in the arch
• Comfort cuffs provide softer, contoured padding to
accommodate the back of Achilles and ankle areas
• Glove leather on tongue (on non-GTX boots) and extra
padding for maximum comfort on the instep
• Upper cuffs in Lady Light use glove leather for a soft,
comfortable fit
GORE-TEX ®
The LOWA GORE-TEX ® System - patented by LOWA.
Combined with our patented Climate Control System, LOWA’s
lasted GORE-TEX ® construction produces a better-fitting boot
that allows for no wrinkles, better breathability and waterproofness.
Not to mention that our boot is the only non-bootie system
approved by W.L. Gore and even then, our boots still exceed all
of W.L. Gore’s standards and testing. In a nutshell, our nonbootie
system means a few important things for the customer:
• Superior fit
• Less wrinkles
• Lower likelihood of hot spots
The Guts of a LOWA Boot

LOWA Patented
GORE-TEX ® Construction
GORE-TEX ® laminate:
• offers waterproof and breathable comfort and protection.
• is an ultra lightweight microporous Teflon membrane (PTFE)
with approx 1.4 billion pores/cm and is extremely resistant to
heat and cold.
• is waterproof, but allows water vapor to be permeable. These
pores are 700 times greater than the size of a water vapor
molecule. The temperature and pressure gradient between
the outside environment and inside the boot or shoe supports
the outward transfer of water vapor.
Three-layer lining material is laminated to the GORE-TEX ®
laminate.
1) Upper material is sweat-transmitting and repels water.
2) Middle layer is open cell foam which allows moisture
to move through.
3) Hydrofil ® nylon backing attracts moisture and passes it on
to other layers.
The Guts of a LOWA Boot

With LOWA’s patented non-bootie construction, GORE-TEX ®
laminate seams are waterproof welded. In conjunction with
LOWA’s patented “gasket” construction and LOWA’s Climate
Control System (see page 11) that use moisture wicking footbeds
and perforated collars, LOWA GTX with GORE-TEX ® boots
provide the ultimate in waterproof/breathable technology.
The best-selling Renegade Mid GTX
features LOWA’s patented non-bootie
GORE-TEX ® construction.
LOWA offers boots with GORE-TEX ® construction in all our
product categories.
GORE-TEX ® XCR ®
LOWA uses GORE-TEX ® XCR ® technology in
footwear that’s designed for aerobic activities like
fast-packing, mountain biking and scrambling, and
in casual shoes that need to be durably waterproof
yet highly breathable.
GORE-TEX ® XCR ® technology:
• provides climate-controlled comfort in warmer ambient
temperatures and during increased physical activity
• is durably waterproof
• offers a high degree of breathability
• offers a high degree of heat transfer
• offers versatile protection despite low weight
DRI-LEX ®
We use Dri-Lex ® lining in many of our light hiking boots. It’s an
excellent lining when waterproofness is not an issue.
Dri-Lex ® is a three layer knit lining material that’s ideal for moisture
management and has been approved by the American
Podiatric Medical Association.
• Excellent abrasion resistance
• Base layer Hydrofil ® nylon moves moisture away from the
body
• Exclusive integrated hydrophobic/hydrophilic lining provides
moisture vapor transport through a multi-layer moisture
management system.
BENEFITS: Feet stay dry, cool and comfortable, especially in
conditions that don’t require “durable waterproofness.”
The Guts of a LOWA Boot

How LOWA Boots Get Made
Highest Quality of Leather
• Leather is the most important raw material in a boot. Because
it is natural, leather wraps around the foot for a closer fit,
wears well and enjoys a longer life.
• While some boots are made using synthetic materials, these
simply cannot compare to leather for superior fit, break-in
or durability.
• Natural leathers do have slight color and appearance
differences.
• LOWA only uses leather from the “croupon,” the most
consistent, highest quality part of the hide.
How LOWA Boots Get Made

Four Different Types of Leather
FULL GRAIN: This is the thicker outer part of the croupon.
SPLIT OR SUEDE: When the leather is split, the inner, more textured
side is the split or suede leather.
NUBUCK: This is a full grain leather that has been lightly sanded
for a softer finish. This gives it a suede-like look. But don’t be
fooled by its soft, suede look. Nubuck is rugged and durable.
GLOVE LEATHER: This is the thin top layer. It is used for the
lining because it is soft and supple.
Leather is delivered to LOWA from a tannery.
• When it arrives it is chemically treated and dyed for color
and texture.
• Next, LOWA leathers undergo waterproofing treatment for
2-6 hours of exposure protection.
Note: For care instructions please see page 47.
How LOWA Boots Get Made

All LOWA Manufacturing is Done in Europe
Cutting
• LOWA leather cutters are among the most experienced
workers in the factory.
• First, patterns are laid out on sheets of leather and the boot
piece is cut, by hand, with metal die cutters.
• Some boots will require as many as 25-30 pieces of leather
and other materials, with each individual piece requiring its
own die.
Stitching
• Each upper is stitched by hand, with up to 75 steps.
• High stress areas are double-stitched.
• New synthetic, non-wicking thread is used in all stitching.
• When the boot begins to take shape,
string laces are used to hold
it together.
• All stitching is done in factories
throughout Germany, Poland,
Croatia, Slovakia and Italy.
How LOWA Boots Get Made

The Lasting Process
• The upper is precisely laced for lasting.
• The insole or shank is tacked to
the boot.
• The uppers go through the vapor
channel where they are conditioned
with steam and heat for lasting to make
them pliable and to prevent tearing.
• The upper is then stretched over the last and the fore-foot is
glued to the insole.
• Next, the heel is stretched over the last and nailed to
the insole.
Women’s Lasts
LOWA's Women's Boots are globally acclaimed for their outstanding
fit. This is accomplished through specially designed
lasts.
• Women's lasts are created to more comfortably fit the shape
of the female foot.
• Have a narrower heel and higher arch.
• Used in all categories including the Light Hiking group.
How LOWA Boots Get Made

The Rand
• Masking tape is applied to the upper to
make sure the glue is applied neatly.
• A special machine presses the rubber
rand to the boot upper.
• The rand wraps under the boot to prevent the sole from
falling off.
• Boots with new "high wall" rubber rand are placed
between two pressurized "water pillows" to ensure even
adhesion to the foot.
Outsoles
• A special, heat-sensitive glue is applied to the sole.
• A UV light, which makes the glue appear blue, is used by
LOWA craftspeople to ensure the glue is applied evenly and
completely.
• Pressure is applied to the upper and
the sole for a complete glue process.
• The sole is heated before it is bonded
to the upper.
• The complete shoe is run through a
cooling channel to "shrink" the upper
to the last.
