Application Story - PTFE production in England
Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers UK Ltd installed four
KROHNE OPTIMASS 7000 T10 flowmeters to
measure heavy gas flow at its polytetrafluoroethylene
(PTFE) manufacturing plant in Lancashire. Each
OPTIMASS replaced 2 previous measuring devices for
pressure and temperature.
Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) is a dense, almost liquid,
heavy gas used in the production of PTFE.
The TFE gas is produced in a separate area of the factory and pumped into the PTFE
manufacturing plant through a common pipeline 24 hours per day. The common gas
feed is then split into four lines to produce different grades of PTFE, each of which is
fitted with an OPTIMASS flowmeter.
PTFE Slurry
Process Parameters
Medium : Tetrafluoroethylene
Flow Range : 0 ... 20 kg/min
Density : 144.8 kg/m3
Viscosity : 0.0135 cP
Temperature : 4 °C
Pressure : 24 bar
Water and Initiator
22 Bar
The OPTIMASS T10 meters measure the TFE gas into a polymerising vessel
with great accuracy. The gas is then combined with water and initiators in the
reactor to produce the PTFE slurry which then has the water removed to leave
the end product.
Advantage for the customer:
With the installation of these meters AGF improved the accuracy of gas
measurement and eliminated the need for two measurement devices.
