Optimass Application Story
Application: Beer Brewing at Grolsch in Holland
Observe the ice on the pipe above at right!
OPTIMASS is capable of high
measurement accuracy of 0.1 % for
fluids and 0.5% for gasses. Our
mass flow meters can measure
density and volume flow as well as
calculating Brix or Plato with the
concentration option.
Grolsch’s tests actually showed
better than 0.1% accuracy when
dosing 8 kg batches of hops
When Grolsch built their new state of the art
brewery at Enschede, they equipped it with
KROHNE flowmeters, including OPTIMASS
meters for the more demanding applications
where there is high viscosity or no
conductivity.
In the brewery applications this includes
dosing liquid sugar and hops and for
measuring carbon dioxide levels in the cold
recovery system.
Optimass
Why use Optimass?
Application Note
Due to the very high viscosity and the subsequent need to reduce the pressure drop, it is necessary
to choose a meter whose operating point lies in the lower range of the flow rate.
In this case Optimass shows a marked improvement over the competition.
Zero Stability
Various doses were checked against a certified scale. The following diagram shows how impressive
the performance of the new Optimass was. The low flow cutoff was switched off during the tests.
Coriolis Mass Flow
Application Story – loading of milk in France
Cheese Producers sometime have to sell excess milk or buy in from other suppliers
according to their production demands and quotas. They have various options
available to measure this.
Application :
To accurately record the
quantity of milk loaded
into the tanker trucks
from the storage areas of
the factory. As the milk is
pushed through the pipes
by water, density
measurement is used to
determine the cut-off
point so only milk goes
into the tankers.
Why did the customer choose KROHNE:
The KROHNE sales team in France were able to use
their experience to help the customer to choose Coriolis
mass flowmeters instead of the weighbridge option, and
to demonstrate to his customers that this was a reliable
billing solution, without having to resort to custody
transfer transactions.
Model chosen:
The OPTIMASS 7000 has the technology. With its
single straight tube, it is totally cleanable inline and
approved for hygienic applications. The density
measurement is used to limit the range of density
between 1025 Kg/m3 and 1040 Kg/m3, allowing
differentiation between the passage of the milk and
the water.
STRAIGHT TALK
Benefits to the customer:
Simple daily operation; reduced investment
cost with the meter installed online in the
loading pipes, avoiding the need for civil
engineering works to build a weighbridge.
would have been impossible with most
previous designs of Coriolis mass
One of the UK’s leading speciality vegetable oil refineries is relying on the
installation simplicity and accuracy of KROHNE’s revolutionary OPTIMASS
Coriolis mass flowmeters to monitor the flow of their products into road tankers.
Above The OPTIMASS meters installed directly
Application
INDUSTRY: FOOD
COUNTRY: UK
METER: OPTIMASS T50
Vegetable oils with a variable loading
temperature and a viscosity of
between 8cp and 100cp, are pumped
from storage tanks at an average
mass flowrate of 60 tonnes per hour
using centrifugal pumps. They are
routed through two separate pipework
systems, and pass through the
flowmeters before reaching the loading
points. The OPTIMASS meters send
a pulse output to a batch controller to
measure the mass of oil being
pumped; when the totalised mass flow
reaches a predetermined level the
batch counter stops the pumps.
Why KROHNE? The refinery has built up a close relationship with KROHNE
over the past decade after the flow and level company solved installation
problems experienced with flowmeters.
Problem: Installation restrictions and achieving batch process accuracy with
Coriolis meters
Solution: The innovative design of the 7000 Series, incorporating KROHNE’s
‘Adaptive Sensor Technology’ ensures total flexibility of installation plus
superb accuracy and repeatability.
Due to the abrasive nature of lime milk, transition pieces were installed. As the
Optimass T 50 meter is measuring at the upper velocity limit (6 m/s) for abrasive
applications, after three months' operation the KROHNE agents in Slovenia made a
resistance check and removed the instrument to see if any damage on the transition
piece or instrument had occurred. More than 47,000 tons of lime milk had passed
Application Story – Bio-Ethanol Production in US & Canada
Fuel Ethanol (200 Proof) is a renewable, clean
burning & high octane fuel that is better for the
environment than gasoline. It is also biodegradable
and far less toxic than fossil fuels
and can be used on its own (E100) or blended
with gasoline (E10, E85 etc).
Ethanol can be produced from starch/sugar rich
feed stocks such as grains/cereals (corn, wheat,
rice etc) , potatoes, cassava, beet/sugar cane and
today even from cellulosic biomass sources viz.
wood chips, switch grass, corn stover's, municipal
waste, recycled paper etc.
Of all these feed sources the Dry Grind/Milling
process used for corn (or wheat) feed is the most
popular in US & Canada. Typical OPTIMASS
applications on a Dry Grind/Milling process
(shown on right) include density measurement for
slurry tanks , liquefaction mash, syrup draw ,
rectified & final proof measurements.
Slurry #1 Density ( Slurry Preparation)
Combined Flow/Density measurement using
our OPTIMASS 7000 series (S50 straight
tube) on the evaporator syrup draw
application (shown below) provides a high
investment return by improving the overall
dryer process efficiency downstream of the
evaporators.
Evaporator Syrup Draw
STRAIGHT TALK
Krohne Inc has over 60+ installation ( and 50 more on order) of
OPTIMASS 7000 series (S25/S50 tubes) on the corn
slurry/mash & syrup applications . Additionally on each of these
plants our 7000 series (S15 tubes) are installed on liquid
ammonia feed lines that feed nutrients into the slurry tanks and
fermentors.
Liquefaction Mash
(feed preparation for fermentors)
Corn Slurry and syrup drawn from evaporators
can be extremely nasty & viscous and will clog
almost any bent tube designs - it is here that
the single straight tube Optimass offers
significant benefits.
Also lower pressure drop is a desirable feature
as energy optimization is of utmost importance
on these high energy intensive processes. It
are for these reasons that Krohne is able to
demonstrate value over our competitors.
Application Story
Varnish Production at BASF Coatings AG
BASF Coatings division develops, produces and markets a range of top quality innovative
vehicle, car repair and industrial varnishes and coating materials for buildings and offers
the corresponding coating processes. The Münster site is one of the biggest varnish plants
in the world with a total area of 400,000 square meters.
In order to operate the mobile paddle
mixers used in the colour grinding process
without supervision over 36-48 hours BASF
used a flowmeter to trigger a leakage
alarm. This meter needed to fulfill high
specifications in terms of accuracy. The
properties of the media made things even
more difficult. The raw materials for
varnishes are high-viscosity media which
are processed at a low flow rate. They
have viscosities of 7000mPas and over,
and are also shear thinning - their behavior
changes with the flow rate. The DN 40
flowmeters also have to cope with high
pigment contents. BASF Coatings did not
want to risk any further pressure loss
otherwise they would have to increase the
performance of the pump. BASF Coatings
thus opted for the OPTIMASS, a mass
flowmeter which is virtually made for this
application thanks to its straight-tube
design.
The grinding system is designed for a flow rate of
approx. 5000kg/h. Communication with the PLC takes
place via the OPTIMASS's 4…20mA signal output.
Every 90 seconds the PLC saves a flow
measurement and compares it with the subsequent
values. If there is a difference of 360kg/h, the system
is automatically shut down. At present, further tests
are underway to halve the leakage value.
Why
KROHNE?
• Less pressure loss
• Less abrasion
• Suitable even for large flow volumes
• Wide measuring range
• No risk of blockage
Coriolis Mass Flow
Application Story - Liquefied gas measurement in UK
Specialist chemical manufacturer
F2 Chemicals Ltd has installed
KROHNE’s OPTIMASS 8000
Coriolis mass flowmeter to
improve the reliability of liquefied
gas flow measurement at its plant
in Lancashire.
The liquefied gas is distilled into several fractions which are used as active
ingredients in pharmaceutical products. It was essential that F2 Chemicals
found a way to measure the flow of the liquid reliably to ensure the
consistent, high quality of its products.
The measurement technology F2 Chemicals previously used to measure
the flow of liquefied perfluorobutane and acetone did not provide the
reliability which was critical for F2’s process.
Perfluorobutane and acetone are contained in 100 litre industrial cylinders and are
charged into the distillation column and refluxed through the OPTIMASS Coriolis
mass flowmeter at flow rates of between 40 and 200 kg/hour and at pressures of
between 2 and 7 bar. The temperature of the liquefied gas varies between -5°C
and +15°C. A 20 mA signal is taken from the OPTIMASS and fed into a DCS.
The reading is manually monitored and the distillation
process adjusted according to temperature.
Measurement reliability improved significantly since the
KROHNE OPTIMASS 8000 Coriolis mass flowmeter was installed.
STRAIGHT TALK
F2 Chemicals installed
KROHNE’s OPTIMASS 8000
Coriolis mass flowmeter
because of its ability to
measure liquefied gas
reliably and accurately at low
temperatures. Its twin “u”
shaped measuring tubes
provide excellent signal-tonoise
ratio and measurement
turndown. This was
important considering the low
pressures of the gas being
measured.
Application Story: Liquid Sulphur measurement in Russia
Ammofos AG at Cherepovets is one of
the leading Russian manufactures of
phosphate fertilisers, and part of the
chemical conglomerate JSC Fosagro AG
The focus of the company is the
production of sulphuric acid. Raw
materials used in production are sulphur
and pyrite.
OPTIMASS 7050 T25 mass flowmeters
are used to measure the flow of molten
sulphur with a temperature up to 145°C.
Ammofos plant in Cherepovets
Problem: The temperature has to be kept above 130°C to prevent the
sulphur from hardening and crystallising, and other measurement systems
encountered problems.
Solution: The Optimass meter with its efficient heating jacket prevents the
product solidifying. The great advantage of the single straight tube meter is
its low pressure drop. The other advantage is that, if the product does
solidify the straight tube is easy to clean out and restart the process.
Optimass Mass Flowmeters in
Loading Systems
Mass flowmeters of the Optimass family from KROHNE through their
unique performance specifications are extensively used in various
industrial applications for operating measurements and batching.
However, this is far from being the only
application area of these mass
flowmeters. Growing prices on many kinds
of products lead many plants and
companies to look for effective methods of
online monitoring of fluid operating flows,
as well as measuring the quantities of
product delivered to the buyer in business
dealings.
Application Story Akzo Nobel UK
World leading producer of paints and coatings, Akzo Nobel
Decorative Coatings, has installed four KROHNE
OPTIMASS Coriolis Mass flowmeters at its manufacturing
plant in Darwen, Lancashire to help accurately control
product consistency and minimise production costs.
Accurately measuring the amount of chemicals added to Akzo Nobel’s Crown
range of solvent-based paint products is essential to minimising costs and
maintaining consistent product quality. The chemicals are contained in stainless
steel storage vessels located 70 meters away from the production facility and are
pumped at low pressure through the OPTIMASS flowmeters into mixing vessels
where the paint is manufactured in batches.
Signals from the instruments are fed into the production control system which
controls the flow of the chemicals from the storage vessels to ensure that the
correct amount is added.
Previously Akzo Nobel measured the amount of chemical added to batches of
paint using a load cell-based weighing system. However this did not provide
sufficient measurement accuracy for the range of batch sizes.
The OPTIMASS 7000 Series, with its single straight measuring tube, features a
patented AST design which offers outstanding accuracy and stability when used
on low flow rate applications.
By installing our OPTIMASS meters, Akzo Nobel has automated the process and
significantly improved measurement accuracy.
The installed meters are
2 x OPTIMASS 7000 T25s measuring Calcium and Lithium,
1 x 7000 T15 measuring Cobalt
1 x 3000 S01 measuring silane monomer.
Application Story - PTFE production in England
Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers UK Ltd installed four
KROHNE OPTIMASS 7000 T10 flowmeters to
measure heavy gas flow at its polytetrafluoroethylene
(PTFE) manufacturing plant in Lancashire. Each
OPTIMASS replaced 2 previous measuring devices for
pressure and temperature.
Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) is a dense, almost liquid,
heavy gas used in the production of PTFE.
The TFE gas is produced in a separate area of the factory and pumped into the PTFE
manufacturing plant through a common pipeline 24 hours per day. The common gas
feed is then split into four lines to produce different grades of PTFE, each of which is
fitted with an OPTIMASS flowmeter.
Sand Separation
Application Note
INDUSTRY: MINING
COUNTRY: SWEDEN
METER: OPTIMASS T40
Råda Sand AB is a producer and supplier of fine sand to various industries
including concrete, filtration manufacturer etc. To be able to get the fine sand
out of the water, they have to add the right amount of flocculent chemicals to
settle the sand. The mass concentration controls the whole process in a ratio
with the volume flow. We supplied the customer with an Optimass MFM7050
T 40.
Application: Flocculent
Dosing
Why KROHNE?
Problem
The customer required
accurate dosing of the
flocculent (inorganic
coagulant) due to the high
price of the flocculent and to
improve efficiency.
Solution
The only equipment suitable
for the customer was the
Optimass due to its single
straight tube, which is less
susceptible to abrasion.
The fluid is very abrasive due to its sand content (

The Adaptive Sensor Technology of
Optimass removes the problem of external
influences affecting measurement by using its
own internal mass as a self compensating
mechanism therefore responding quickly to
changes in density.
Application Story
Salt Mining in Austria
Shortly before its 25th Anniversary, Saline Austria in Ebensee
modernised its installation in order to optimise production
processes and minimise environmental impact.
The brine tanks accumulate a slurry of chalk and
gypsum at the bottom which has to be drawn off
periodically. This led to a lot of the brine also
being lost. However with the use of Optimass
meters to measure the density, the valves can be
closed as soon as pure brine is measured. The
slurry density is around 1.3 kg/l and drops to 1.15
with pure brine.
Additionally a KROHNE Optimass is helping to improve the environmental impact as
the waste water slurry from the process is no longer discharged into the Traunsee Lake
but pumped back from Ebensee via a 20 km pipeline where it is forced into the salt
caves of Bad Ischl which in turn displaces new brine. This is then returned by a
separate pipeline. Here also, the KROHNE meter is being used for density control.
Application: Salt production
Why KROHNE?
Problem:
Loss of brine when slurry drawn off
Solution:
Prompt shut-off with Optimass density
measurement
Problem
The problem for the end user lay in the recipe for the coating colour. There were
always bonding problems between the background and the coating. This could have
been caused because the required level of dosing accuracy was not achieved with the
previously used positive displacement meters. Getting accurate and responsive
measurements of the highly viscous and dense products batched such as clay, latex,
carbonate and dispersants was difficult.
Density Measurement of Carbonate Slurry in the Paper Industry
The measurement of the density of Carbonate slurry has
evolved considerably in the last few years in the paper
industry and in particular at this customer in Finland.
Initially the density was measured using Radiometric
density meters and, combined with an Electromagnetic
flowmeter, the mass flow was calculated. Here Berthold
density meters and KROHNE IFM5110F Magnetic
Flowmeters were used.
Later on this measurement method was discontinued due
to the ‘percieved’ dangers of Radiometric measurement
and Single Straight Tube Coriolis meters were used to
replace this technology. The process involves and
evaporation process where the slurry is continuously
circulated till the correct density is achieved in the
evaporator. The Carbonate slurry is then pumped to a
storage tank. A KROHNE 300 G+ was used for this
process. In the initial production and mixing of the slurry
and 800G+ was used. Further enhancement of the
process was made using the Multi I/O option in the mass
meters. This provided the plant engineers with more
data with respect to the process, apart from density, eg
temperature, mass flow etc.
Later orders of mass flowmeters from KROHNE had the
Profibus PA option which gave the plant engineers more
flexibility in the control and monitoring of the plant.
New Evaporator
When it was decided to install a new evaporator the
natural progression was to use the new Optimass
meters from KROHNE.
This project was started in October 2002 and fully
commissioned by May 2003. Here an Optimass
MFM7051 T40 with Profibus PA was used.
KROHNE Magnetic flowmeter Model IFM 5090
WITH Profibus PA was used for water addition to
the process.
One of the biggest Shell petrochemical production facilities in Europe is at SHELL Berre (close
to Marseille),
Application: Truck loading
INDUSTRY: OIL AND GAS
COUNTRY: FRANCE
METER: OPTIMASS 7000 T 40 & T50
The customer needs to load the exact quantity of SAP oil into the tanker to avoid any
overloading. The trucks are then weighed on a weighbridge to get a custody transfer
measurement of the mass. If there is an overload, the truck must come back to an offloading
station, losing valuable operating time. If the tanker is not totally filled, then transportation costs
increase.
The previous installation was less than ideal, and 7 larger meters were replaced with Optimass
T 40 and T 50 meters without any pipeline modifications. This was a requirement, as Shell was
not able to stop the loading stations in order to do the work.
The measurement results were immediately excellent without any special adjustment or field
calibration of the meter. For a 26 ton fill, the measurement accuracy improved to ±0.2% with
Optimass from the previous ±0.8 to 2.5%.
Coriolis Mass Flow
Application Story – Wax Production in UK
UK wax manufacturer Kerax Limited has installed an
OPTIMASS 7300 mass flowmeter to improve the
accuracy of production processes at its plant in
Chorley, Lancashire.
Application:
Kerax produces a variety of different waxes to be used in making castings and as
ingredients in products such as adhesives. Each formulation requires the
blending of two or three types of wax plus a number of additives. The mechanical
meter previously positioned on the input to the blending vessel was not able to
provide the accuracy needed for Kerax’s increasingly stringent process control.
Problem:
The wax flowing through the
meter can vary in density from
0.8 to 1.0 kg/litre and in
viscosity from 5.5 cP to 1,200
cP. It can be flowing at rates
varying from 1.8 to 15 tonnes /
hour with pressures from 1.4 bar
to more than 4.1 bar at
temperatures ranging from 20 to
120°C.
Solution: OPTIMASS 7300-T 50
The installed OPTIMASS 7300
Coriolis mass flowmeter is capable
of handling the wide variation in
process conditions whilst still
delivering accuracy of +/- 0.1 per
cent.
Application Story – Siemens Gasification Test Rig
STRAIGHT TALK
The Siemens gasification centre
in Freiberg, Germany, is one of
the most comprehensive
gasification test facilities in the
world. Its gasification reactor is
rated at five MWth and can be
adjusted to different feedstock
conditions. The facility also
includes a range of feedstock
preparation systems and related
gas cleaning process units.
A test rig for large-scale, high-pressure feeding tests and further equipment for coal
and slag analysis (e.g. fluidization and viscosity) complement the facilities. With this
equipment, a broad range of test conditions can be simulated.
For the examination of fouling in heat exchangers,
a test rig was designed to gain experience when
preheating process water up to 220°C. Thermo oil
is used as a heating medium in the heat exchanger.
Both the monitoring of temperature and a reliable
monitoring of the volume flow are decisive factors
for the evaluation.
An OPTIMASS 9000 from KROHNE was installed
to control the thermo oil volume flow. The mass
flowmeter records the volume flow of the thermo oil
at 230 °C and 10 barg. The maximal permissible
temperature of the thermo oil is 300°C.
Application Story
Top gas mud density measurement in Nova hut a.s.
ISPAT Nova Hut a.s. is one of the largest metallurgic plants in the Czech Republic.
It is an integrated steelmaking concern with a metallurgical production and large
engineering shops. The metallurgical production is of a mass character, the main
products being welded and hot-rolled seamless steel pipes, long products and wire
rod, hot rolled sheets and strips. The engineering production (e.g. steel mining
supports) is geared for batch production. Their coking plant is the largest coke
producer in the Czech Republic.
ISPAT Nova Hut has been using several hundreds of KROHNE magnetic inductive
flowmeters and flow controllers (mainly on water measurements) and additionally
ultrasonic flowmeters (on demineralised water and tar), level radar (blast furnace
stock level, hydrochloric acid level measurement) and mass flowmeters (fuel oil, top
gas and steel sludge measurement). All instruments have been subjected to
demanding operating conditions.
In the blast furnace, during the pig iron production process, a lot of top gas is
generated. The gas (with temperature 200 – 500°C) contains from 30 to 100 g/m3 of
dust. The gas is cleaned with sprinkling water, which then flows into settling basins.
Here the mud settles and then it is pumped first to thickeners and after thickening to a
separator. For the process control it is necessary to know the density of the mud
pumped from basins to thickeners and from thickeners to the separator.
The customer had been using nucleonic density meters for 10 years. These meters
require special approvals and checks and a lot of maintenance. Moreover they could
not be in operation without product flow. For this reason the customer decided to test
2 KROHNE mass flowmeters Corimass MFM 4085 G+ - 1500 G. After 6 months´
testing, 8 pieces of Optimass T50 mass flowmeters were ordered.
Application Story – Fuel Consumption in Norway
4 Optimass 1300 C S25 meters were purchased for fuel monitoring on ferries in
Norway with very good results. The first installation is now saving about 1000 litre
diesel per day, which is about 120.000 Euro p.a. The second pair have now been
commissioned on another ferry and we expect more orders to be forthcoming.
The logging system is delivered by Bentzen Elektro. It uses 2 of our very precise
OPTIMASS 1300C flow meters that measure the difference between input and
output. One meter is on the input side of the fuel line and one on the return pipe.
The difference measures the fuel consumption.
The basis of the system is a 6.5’’ TFT
colour screen displaying the consumption
based on different criteria, like time or
distance travelled. The screen has a
touch function and is easy to operate.
There is an alarm function to show when
the consumption is too high. The log
function is in the screen and is saved in
an USB-stick, which can be down loaded
to a PC to keep a history of consumed
fuel.
The system is very flexible and can be
extended where required to log the
consumption with regard to number of
revolutions, pitch or speed,
Coriolis Mass Flow
The customer needs to load the exact
quantity of SAP oil into the tanker to avoid
any overloading. The trucks are then
weighed on a weighbridge to get a custody
transfer measurement. If there is an
overload, the truck must come back
to an offloading station, losing valuable
operating time. If the tanker is not totally
filled, then transportation costs increase.
